The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin Read-a-long!
Nrlymrtl of Dab of Darkness is up to her old tricks and roped me into another read-a-long this month :D. This time, we’re reading The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin which I had absolutely no hope of saying no to. I have been meaning to read this one since I heard of it earlier this year and then when all the bigoted hate towards Jemisin started, I just wanted to read her amazing books and support her even more! Therefore, read-a-long time :D. And probably a giveaway at the end to celebrate this awesome author <3.
If you still want to join up, you totally can! Just email me at onstarshipsanddragonwings at gmail dot com and I’ll get you on the list :D. We’re going to be doing ~100 pages a week for the next couple of weeks :). Below are the questions and answers for chapters 1-9!
1) We’ve met our narrator, Yeine. What are your first impressions? Do you like the chosen form of story telling so far?
OMG I LOVE IT! These breaks in between the actual story of Yeine’s scattered thoughts are just so much fun. It makes me suspicious that something happens to make her mind more scattered since she talks about needing to remember. I love flawed narration and I love Yeine as a narrator so I’m freaking ecstatic :D.
2) Yeine essentially has two families – the Darre (her father’s people) and the Arameri (her mother’s people). What do you think of her two halves? Do you think one will win out over the other within Yeine?
I’m very much hoping that she stays true to the Darre part of her. They just seem like much better people obviously ;-). I love the emphasis of strength as beauty and strength of women in the Darre culture that Yeine has referred to. It seems likely that she’ll have to play the Arameri games, but really, she better not turn into them at her core ;-).
3) We meet the Enefa, the enslaved gods. Which do you wish to know the backstory to the most? What do you think of their enslavement?
Sieh is currently top of my intrigued list. We have a bit of an idea of what is going on with the others, but I’m curious as to Sieh’s real intentions and nature. He does the typical trickster god thing, sure, but there is obviously a lot more under the surface. The gods have already referenced something being special and important about Yeine, and it looks like Sieh is the one mostly driving that interest, so I can’t wait to find out what that is about.
4) Nahadoth finally catches up to Yeine and his first words and actions are mysteries to her. Gibbering or meaning?
Meaning! Well they better have meaning at least, haha. No red herrings please D: I’m thinking some of the weirdness was due to him coming out of a magic coma from the orders/daylight, but he seems to also have a very vested interest in Yeine so I’m thinking we’ll find out that his kissing weirdness does have significance.
5) We’ve met the competition for the unspoken throne – Lady Scimina and Lord Relad. How do you think they will complicate Yeine’s life?
Apart from trying to kill her?? ;-) I can see Scimina deciding to impede Yeine’s search for the truth about her mother and her attempts to help her old country just for the same of being cruel in addition to trying to win the competition. Relad is a strange one though, since he is obviously so broken. I’m hoping that he comes around and turns out to have goodness in him that has just been beaten down for too long.
6) The Enefa obviously want something from Yeine. What do you think that is and how do you think Yeine will react to their wants?
*crosses fingers* Please don’t be a chosen one, please don’t be a chosen one, please don’t be a chosen one. Whew, but seriously, Yeine obviously has some special quality that they gods have been referring to, but I really don’t need another chosen one story ;-). As long as the gods have a just reason for asking for her help, I see Yeine reacting positively. It’ll just be all about how people go about making “requests” I think.
Yey, time to go read Chapters 10-16 and we’ll be here for questions next week :D. So, have you read The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms already? Have any vague chuckling you want to do as this newbie finally reads it??
