A Sci-fi/Fantasy Book Subscription Box! + Giveaway

Books on Dragonwings - A Sci-fi/Fantasy Book Subscription Box

Hello loves! Time to reveal what I’ve been working on lately :D. My not-so-secret project is called Books on Dragonwings and it is a book subscription box specifically for sci-fi and fantasy readers. I’m hosting a giveaway of the first box if you’d like to help promote my new business!

The Kickstarter for the April box is now going and the box will feature:

The Star-Touched Queen First Box

The first box will be The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

Through the Kickstarter there are a lot of options for goodies to get for pledging $1-100 depending on your budget! Check out the campaign here: Books on Dragonwings Kickstarter

(If you win the giveaway, I’ll refund you, don’t worry!)

**Free shipping for US addresses. If you want a box shipped internationally, please let me know and I’ll set up that option!

Giveaway!

If you’d like to help me promote this new endeavor and possibly win The Star-Touched Queen box at the same time, this giveaway is for you! Since I’m specifically trying to get people aware of this pre-order, the only way to enter is to spread the word. Since generally I’ll only be shipping orders to the US (unless there is interest in international shipping!), this giveaway is open to US addresses only. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to my email. Please be sure if you are tweeting to put something before my username so that you are reaching your followers, so something like “.@OnStarshipsBlog is giving away a box” instead of “@OnStarshipsBlog is giving away a box”. Remember that I’ll refund whoever wins if you’ve placed a pre-order, so don’t worry about getting two accidentally!

What is it?

Here’s a demo box to get an idea:

Thanks to Lisa @ Lost in Literature for the photo!

Books on Dragonwings will be a quarterly subscription box that will include 1) one hand-picked new science fiction or fantasy title that I have personally read and loved, 2) one or two high quality items themed directly around the included book, and 3) a list of recommendations for after you have finished the book and need another one to read!

What if I already have the book?

I know I personally worry about joining subscription services because I probably have already read the included book by the time it comes out or am not interested in it. Therefore, each book will be announced a month ahead of time, so you don’t have to worry about getting a duplicate or something you don’t want to read. If you have already gotten a finished copy from the publisher and loved it, there will eventually be an option to get just the goodies to go along with your new favorite book.

What will it cost?

There will be two options: 1) Single purchases where you buy one box at a time after the book is announced with no recurring fee. This will be $43 including shipping in the US. If there is interest for international shipping, I’m happy to figure out the added shipping cost and make that an option. 2) (Will be available after this first quarter) Recurring purchase that you can cancel before a set date each quarter. This is for those of you who are confident you’ll want every box and want a bit of a discount. This will be $40 each quarter, including shipping. Again, let me know if you want an international option.

If there is enough interest, I am considering offering a $20 option that is everything except the book for those of you who already have the book or have already read it. Let me know!

How do you decide on the book?

I work with publishers big and small to be able to read books I think would be a good fit in advance. Only when I find a book that knocks my socks off my little dragon feet do I go forward with planning out the box. There are a lot of books coming out every quarter, so my goal is to help you find the absolute best to read. I will also make a members’ only area for anyone who has purchased a box in the past. There you can nominate upcoming books that you are really excited about and I will do my best to see if they would be a good fit. I’ll also be posting the book recommendations there after each quarter so that you don’t have to worry about losing your physical copy. If you’ve ever purchased a box previously, you can see the recommendations even if you didn’t buy this quarter.

What age range will the books be in?

I believe that amazing science fiction and fantasy can focus on characters of any age. Therefore, the books I consider will be both YA and adult. I also read a lot of middle grade so let me know if you’d be interested in a middle grade themed box. Generally, I will focus on books that are science fiction or fantasy first and romance second. A lot of YA (and some adult!) doesn’t actually meet that goal, so I’ll be only including the ones that do. If you love books with amazing worlds, magic, technology, creatures, and characters, I’ll be picking books that will appeal to you.

So if this is something that appeals to you, I would really appreciate you pre-ordering and/or spreading the word. These businesses are ALL about how many people are reached, so even if you aren’t interested in this first box, tweeting, sharing on Facebook, sharing the demo box on Instagram, and telling all your friends will help make sure there are more boxes and one that you will love!

Is this something that you’d be interested in? Any recommendations for the kinds of books and items you’d like to see?

Thank you immensely for all your support over the years. <3

  1. Wow, your box looks awesome! And an all SFF one is the perfect kind in my opinion lol. I can’t afford any sort of subscription box at the moment, but this would be a great one if I could, and I will totally tweet about it for you! Best of luck :-)

  2. This is a really awesome idea! Definitely something I wish I could afford to subscribe to. I can see it catching on with a lot of bloggers, for sure!

  3. My Facebook is locked to friends only for all posts, but I did link this page there to help you get the word out! I hope you’re able to get lots of subscriptions, it sounds like a fun subscription box!

  4. This is an awesome idea!! I love how you’re announcing what the box will be ahead of time. That’s such a great idea! That way we don’t end up wasting money on a book we don’t end up liking or have no interest in. I also like how it’s specially a SFF subscription box.
I’d love to see a box for This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab or False Hearts by Laura Lam. Or Gemina by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. That would probably get lots of interest.

    • Exactly! I get so frustrated when I don’t know what book I’m purchasing since we get so many pre-orders haha.

Oo yes This Savage Song is on my list to consider! I hadn’t heard of False Hearts, I’ll check it out :D. I’ll need to investigate whether Gemina can be a starting place for that trilogy, I don’t want to people not to be able to jump right in to the book ya know?

  5. This is an awesome idea! I wish I could afford it haha! Good luck with your new business! It sounds really neat! I especially like the idea of the recommended reads list! You could so hire out just to make those lists for people!

    • Thanks :D. I’m actually offering a custom list of recs through my Patreon too if you want individual lists :). Would you be interested in an option that had just the items and rec list and therefore was more like $20?

      • Ooh now that’s tempting! Would it be a list of recs based on the book of the month or a custom list based on a kind of book I liked? I’m trying to find more books with good monsters like Nice Dragons Finish Last and Chronicles of Nick. (I tried Monstrous, it was good up until that wth ending haha!)

        • The book rec list for the box is based on qualities of the focus book. The Patreon has an option for a custom list based on your interests :)
