Book Buddies

Book Buddies – A Chill Reading Experience

Hey lovelies! I’ve had an idea rolling around in my head for a couple of months and when Ashley started Book Blogging.net it seemed like a great opportunity to give it a try! Basically, I love read-alongs except that they stress me out a little bit with the rigid schedules. It’s fun to read books with other people, but I wanted a way to do it with just one or two of you and all of us just coordinate a pace that worked for the group. Therefore, Book Buddies is basically read-alongs lite :D.

What is it?

Oh you want more details?? Fine ;-). Basically, Book Buddies is a group on Book Blogging.net where you can go on the forum toooooo:

  • Post your list of books you’re planning to read soon (older books, recently published, ARCs, up to you!) so other people can see if they are planning to read a book on your list and want to join you.
  • Check out other people’s upcoming books lists to see if you want to read any with them.
  • Make new discussion threads for a book you’re reading with a couple other people to coordinate how far you’ll read each day and discuss the book as you read.
  • Whatever else you’d like! There has been talk of joint reviews and lots of general blogging chat which I love to join in on ;-).

My January List

So to give you an idea how it works, you can check out my January Book Buddies list:

  • Horizon (review ARC)
  • Rebel (5/14, borrowed ARC)
  • Cruel Beauty (ARC)
  • Mind Games (pre-ARC)
  • Black Dog (2/4/14, eARC)
  • Mistwalker (2/4/14, eARC)
  • The Waking Engine (2/11/14, eARC)
  • Perfect Lies (2/18/14, eARC)
  • Burn Bright (2/25/14, eARC)

So basically, these are the books I’m planning to read in January and would love to read with you if you are planning to read them too! I’ve already found a couple of people planning to read some of these with me this month and we’d love for you to join us :D.

Upcoming Buddy Reads

And in case you are tempted but don’t want to jump in unprepared, these are the buddy reads that are currently planned for January that I know of:

  • Cruel Beauty starting Jan. 5th
  • The Waking Engine starting Jan. 15th
  • Mind Games starting Jan. 20th
  • Mistwalker starting Jan. 24th
  • All That Glows starting Jan. 27th

The emphasis is whatever structure works for those of you buddying up, so feel free to just join in on any book that you want to read and start your own threads if there is a different book you want a book buddy for :D.

Do you have any interest in joining Book Buddies? Suggestions for how to make Book Buddies more fun for you? Questions about how this all works and what is going on inside my brain?? ;-)

  1. Hi there!

Love your site and saw you on BB.net. How do I go about joining the book buddies group?

    • Hi! You just join the Book Buddies group on BB.net and post on the forum what you are interesting in reading :)

  2. Hallo Anya,

Where are we with The Archived & The Night Circus!? I finally could log into my BB account, as I’ve been having issues with my browser for over a month, and *everything!* has changed! :( I understood the last format so much easier… I tweeted you yesterday, but I wasn’t sure if it was just Ruby & I reading the books or if we were all re-organising for February!? Awaiting your advice! :)

    • Haha, unfortunately my February is currently a bit packed. I wasn’t in the group for Night Circus so feel free to recreate that thread and start that up whenever it works for you two ;-). For the Archived, perhaps later in the month when Ruby is done with her exams?

  3. I have joined….FINALLY!

  4. This sounds like so much fun – I’m totally in – especially since you and I both read both adult and YA SFF books. Oh my book soul mate and new book buddy. I’ll check out this site and join woot!

    • Woot! Omg, it would be so fun to read something together, you have to let me know what you’re planning to read in February! Also have you heard of The Waking Engine???

      • Yes! I’ll definitely be reading The Waking Engine. Just waiting for my copy to arrive. Do you have a copy of The Ophelia Prophecy? I’ll be reading that as well! There are a bunch I’ll email you a list right now – though it doesn’t have all my books on it yet cause I’ve been slacking on updating them as I get approved and as books have arrived its been a scary holidays.

        • Gah, I want to wait to finish Waking Engine until your copy arrives, but I’m halfway through and just can’t stop reading!

Oo, I hadn’t heard of The Ophelia Promise, but I’ll request it now! I have pretty good luck with Tor *crosses fingers* How do you hear of these awesome books??

  5. Fascinating. Readalongs can definitely be fun, and now that I’m not participating in 2 massive ones at once like I did last year, maybe doing a readalong every now and again might not be such a bad thing. Thanks for the link; I’ll definitely check it out.

    • Woot, I hope you join us :D They seem to go faster when it’s only a couple of people too since if you all get really excited you can just blow through it with the flexible scheduling ;-)

  6. This is a really neat idea! I may jump in for February. It’s always fun to read books with others and without the pressure it would be even nicer!

  7. Ooh, such a good idea, Anya! I agree, read-a-longs are too structured for me, and if my time schedule doesn’t fit I often fall by the wayside and end up giving up trying to discuss the book with other bloggers. I like that Book Buddies is less pressure, so I’ll be sure to check it out and see if anyone’s reading plans match up with mine. :)
