A Bookish Fall Retrospective {2013}

Book Discussion
How did you do on your fall goals?

I love setting goals and I love looking back to see how I did on them as long as I didn’t do too terribly ;-). This fall I had two bookish goals: my fall TBR list and the Book Blog Walkers October Challenge.

Let’s see how I did on my fall TBR list first….

Must-have Sequels:

  • Republic of Thieves – read! Didn’t enjoy as much as  I hoped, oh well
  • Bang – read! Looooooooved
  • Iron Traitor – just finished this one, was a bit disappointed.

Exciting Firsts:

  • Pawn – read! Loved it :D Check out the ARC giveaway!
  • Tandem – decided to skip since I couldn’t fit it in and it lost it’s sparkle.
  • Waterfell – read, haaaaated D:
  • Seven Forges – read! It was all right ;-)

Not Technically Fall (not fall releases, but I’m trying to get ahead this fall!):

  • Alienated – read! It’s cute ;-)
  • Into the Still Blue – read! Again disappointing :(
  • White Space – haven’t read yet, it’s on the winter list now!

So 8/10, not bad! Perhaps more excitedly, I managed to get a couple of audiobooks listened to through the Book Blog Walkers challenge! The goal for this challenge was to walk at least 30 mins every day during October. I did a pretty good job on this, throwing in some gym time to make up for lazy days, hehe. The last week of October was a complete fail since I got sick and messed up my back at the same time! There was just no hope. But I finished the following audiobooks while walking (and driving, but we’re focused on the walking, hehe):

  • Red Seas Under Red Skies – pirates!
  • Legend – so happy to have started this series
  • Reboot – quite enjoyable! Love this narrator so much <3
  • Seraphina – currently listening to so I didn’t technically finish it during October, but I’m well into it and loving it!

Overall, a pretty great fall! I’m also going to be continuing to try to fit in walking where ever I can and listening to my audiobook while getting to class! I started parking at the far parking ramp on campus, adding ten (plus) minutes to my walk for class/work, but it’s totally worth it because the leaves are so pretty and it’s more audiobook time!

How was your October/fall??

  1. You are my book soul mate lady.
I just grabbed the Seraphina audio!! AND the Reboot audio I think as well. I’ll have to check my ipod.

I will be reading White Space, Pawn and Alienated as well. Pawn just arrived today! White Space is sooo big its like a brick jeez that cuts my fervor down some. I have Seven Forges but I’ve decided not to read it. It just upon looking at it more and more I just get the feeling I will not like it.

I want to read Tandem but I didn’t get a copy so it goes on the TBR if I have the time to pick it up.

Whats BANG? I must loook this one up since you love it so much.

    • Yey!! Wait, did you grab them because I listened to them recently or on your own? Since that would be down right spooky awesome ;-)

I agree about White Space, it looks intriguing but I’m terrified of longer books right now…. Seven Forges was definitely interesting, but I think you’re fine to skip it, not really omg must read material ;-)

You must read Bang! It’s the second book in Lisa McMann’s Visions series, the first is Crash. Basically the MC Jules starts having a vision of a horrible snowplow crash at the beginning of the book and it gets worse and worse (appearing on all reflective surfaces and text surfaces, making driving impossible) and she has to figure out how to stop it. Bang has someone else having a different vision. Crash was fun, but Bang was omg awesome!

      • I had picked them up on my own! LOL see – creepy in sync aren’t we???

I agree the longer ones are making my brain go nutso. I’m about to start NOS4A2 any day now and that bugger is 720 pages. I mean I didn’t use to balk at that many pages back when I wasn’t review/blogging but now man time is a premium. I still look forward to diving in.

Ok so I can skip CRASH and just go straight to BANG right? I love it when I don’t have to read the previous books. Standalones are gems!

        • Omg that is so awesome!

Mmm, yeah you could skip straight to Bang, though you’ll have to just accept the relationship as it is, since it starts in the previous book ;-) You’ll play a little bit of catch up regarding the family dynamics and such, but I can see it working. They are both really short too!

  2. Book bloggers WALKING challenge? I totally gotta do that! I’d get to listen to audio fiction AND get some excercize! I’ve found that the 20-40 minute short audio shorts at Lightspeed and Clarksworld magazine are perfect for that, btw. :D

  3. Great progress! My October went fairly well, as I ended up posting more reviews than I thought I’d get to, though my reading suffered a bit and I had to read some short nonfiction to balance out the longer fiction so that I didn’t just end up falling behind in my overall reading goals. Still, progress is progress, right?

I don’t really have a Fall goal. More like a 2013 goal? LOL! So I’ve managed to catch up on some of my TBR list. Aside from putting a few new books ahead of my already 400+, I’ve managed to read 63 of them so far this yr. I’m aiming for 75 by the year’s end. I can’t help myself when I read great reviews about the same book on several different blogs. I have to immediately buy and read!!! That’s really what’s keeping me from committing to the ones I already have to read. Well, that and working 12 hrs per day, 5 sometimes 6 days a week. I’ll get my crazy schedule under control one of these days. :-)

    • Fair enough! I am going for 100 books this year and that has been going pretty well too. The season by season goals help me focus on what review books I have to get read in the next couple of months and then throw in a couple of wishful thinking books ;-)

  5. You did really well, Anya. I avoid setting myself goals like this because I suck at keeping up with the challenges, so major props to you! Also glad to hear Alienated was cute!

    • I’ve been avoiding challenges that go outside of review books since those have been dominating reading life (I just deleted my 2013 TBR Pile Challenge badge in order to admit defeat ;-) )

Eight out of 10 is not bad at all! I can’t even remember what I read in October. All I know is I’m way behind on my GoodReads challenge and will scrambling to make it up in December.

And now, nose back to the grindstone. (I took off writing the other night to hang out with visiting family. Bad choice. Never again will I skip a day and “plan to make it up later.” Skip days only when already ahead.) Good luck on the November goals!

    • I’m loving my reading schedule for keeping track of books read each month. It’s helped a lot! Making it up later never works for me either, I have to always just accept I’ll lose that time and move on, hehe

  7. Congrats, that is an awesome result :D

Awesome job! 8/10 is a great amount to get read from a goal. I had to stop setting seasonal goals because I just did so terribly on

    • Haha, I hear ya! I’m very strict on getting review books read on time, so that helps when I include them on the list ;-)

  9. Congrats on reading so many on your Fall list. I’ve never thought of doing a list of books I want to read in a particular set of time but it’s a really good idea! I think I’m going to have to try make one for Winter!

  10. Congrats on rocking your Fall goals :-) So far I’ve only read 2 of the books that I put on my Fall reading list. Gotta improve on that!

    • Hehe, I normally fail at those lists if I do them in wishful thinking mode, but since I cheated and put review books on there, I kind of had to read them ;-)
