Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading and my posts from the week.

Whew, uh hi! So obviously my life was not as back to normal as I thought the last time I wrote one of these…. Eh, it’s part of my new ‘hobbies should be fun’ philosophy, so when I’m busy all weekend, I don’t sweat writing an updates post! So let’s see, I defend my dissertation April 24th, i.e. find out if I pass my PhD (unlikely to fail, but if I didn’t show up it would be bad). Then I have graduation May 5th. Then I fix all the final things in my dissertation before turning it into the university, find out formatting errors, fix again, rinse and repeat! Hopefully it doesn’t take too many tries ;-).

I’m very much in crunch time for the dissertation. Things are good, but I need to actually write up a lot of sections that I have just heavily outlined. Also I was getting some really weird results and then a new theory paper came out directly predicting my results, so that’s cool!

But I’ve been reading of course because I would get really depressed otherwise, woot! Here is what I’m currently reading, not everything I’ve read since the last update since that would be way too much haha.

My Week

Tropic of SerpentsI started the audiobook of Tropic of Serpents and I’m soooooo in love! I will need to go page through my physical copy to see the sketches that I’m missing, but the narrator is so amazing for this series that I have no regrets. DRAGONS!!!! Like seriously I want to grow up to be Isabella…. Still time right? More seriously though, this book, despite being fantastical science, has been a great inspiration to dive back into my actual science after a hard day. Isabella’s love of dragons reminds me how much I also love the natural world and want to uncover its secrets :).

The TurnI have been meaning to read Kim Harrison for a long time and so this new release seemed a good time to try. It’s a prequel to another series and therefore I’m a bit worried that it isn’t actually a good start. There is a lot being thrown at me early on that I assume are just reminders for readers of the main series, but I’m all right so far. Mostly I’m just pumped because the heroine is a scientist :D. Magic/supernatural + geneticist is pretty awesome in my opinion.

Gone with the WitchI get obsessive about things from  time to time (okay I pretty much always have an obsession but it might not be as noticeable as another month’s). A few weeks ago it was sourdough (I have my starter all raised up and have been making weekly bread instead of buying it, which I’ll continue!). Now it is dogs. Since we are finally nearing the point where we will own our own house, I can finally start thinking about getting a dog! Husband, however, has only agreed if it is a low/non-shedding dog and also not a puppy (he’s never had a dog, I want to ease him into it!). Therefore, I’m actually obsessed with ‘designer’ poodle mixes. We don’t want a poodle (he’s prejudice), but the mixes are sooooooo perfect. So if you know of an adult (4 years would be ideal) poodle mix that needs a home near Iowa, let me know!

Oh right, I’m reading Gone with the Witch because it’s about a pet show :D. And in fact that little dog on the cover is a poodle mix. So yeah, it makes me happy and channels my obsession a bit.

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading and my posts from the week.

Oh hey look, an Updates post! This is how you can tell that my life is getting somewhat back to normal :D. Now that the contract is signed, I’m happy to announce that I’ll be starting at Grinnell College in the fall as a Computer Science professor! So if you are a high schooler thinking about colleges or an undergrad thinking about computer science, feel free to email me questions and I’ll give what advice I can, ha.

My Week

Dreadnought

My ebook has been Dreadnought for a bit here. I’ve been very slow in reading in general despite getting a shiny new Kindle for the holidays. I love Dreadnought though and highly recommend it. It has a trans super hero MC!

FallerI just started the audiobook of Faller and I’m not sure what I think so far. I loved McIntosh’s young adult Burning Midnight, so I’m sticking with it for now. I started getting sleepy listening on my drive and had to switch over to music to stay awake, so that always seems a bad sign….

Save the Cat!I’ve also been reading Save the Cat! I saw it on the shelf at work (yeah, we have random books on our shelves for anyone to borrow) and was hooked immediately. Obviously writing books has a bit more flexibility than mainstream screenwriting, but as a big believer in engrossing fantasy, I’m definitely happy to be reading some of these tips. I had been feeling a bit lost in how to improve the structure of my WIP and now feel much much better. Highly recommended if you want to write fiction! [Read more…]

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello dragonlings! How are you doing on this lovely Sunday? It is starting to definitely feel like fall around here and I lurrrrrrrrve it! The sugar maples are changing first, as usual, and wow, it looks like they are on fire, so cool.

I feel like including a Pokemon Go update occasionally since that’s my other thing these days: I caught a Scyther for the first time last weekend! And I got enough candy to evolve a Rhydon :D. My new buddy is now Magnemite and he’s a cutie just hovering there :).

My Week

I just moments ago finished Crooked Kingdom! I of course love this world and characters and found a lot more reading time the past two weeks than I had been for some strange reason ;-). I have feelings about the ending though if anyone wants to talk spoilers privately!

I decided to go with Gemina as my next audiobook and it is interesting I must say. There are a lot of sound effects to mimc the text effects and I like it. It’s definitely a different experience from reading the physical book, but still quite different from a typical audiobook.

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello loves! I have to admit I almost forgot that I needed to write this updates post still. I’ve decided that, at least for the next few months of job applying and dissertation writing, I need to work a few hours on the weekends. Normally weekends are time for me to get all the blog posts written and a little reading done, but these things happen eh? So things are probably going to be a little slower here for October. I have reviews written and plan to still do all the regular posts, there just might be more days without content here and there, but I know you’ll forgive me :).

My Week

The Midnight StarWhat I am rocking at these days is audiobooks! I just finished the audiobook of The Midnight Star and I won’t say much because it doesn’t come out for another week or two, but I was happy with this ending :).

Crooked KingdomI also was able to grab Crooked Kingdom from my library! I didn’t think I had managed to be first on the hold list, but apparently I had :D. I’m only like 100 pages in because what is time, but I’m excited to be reading this conclusion with all of you!

September is almost gone, whaaaaaaat? The leaves are starting to change around here and I’m so excited! I bought this scarf yesterday because it was just the perfect embodiment of my love of fall:

My Week

The Midnight StarI got the audiobook of The Midnight Star for review so I had to start that immediately! I love this series so much and am pumped to see how things end! I’m not super in love with the narration of the audiobook, but it’s still nice to be able to fit this one in while driving.

HuntedI’m also reading a manuscript of Hunted to see if it will work for the March Books on Dragonwings box. Things are looking good so far ;-).

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello everyone! The last two weeks have been a bit exciting and I’m still trying to catch up a bit. I have a lot of reviews to write since I got a lot of reading done while traveling last week, but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to write them up :(.

My Week

The Obelisk GateI’m listening to The Obelisk Gate on audiobook and loving it so much! This series is so amazing and I wasn’t sure how things could get more epic after the first book, but they are!!!! You definitely need to read The Fifth Season if you haven’t and if you like audiobooks, that is also an excellent choice.

A Familiar TailI also decided to start reading some paranormal cozy mysteries since they remind me of autumn so much. I’m halfway through A Familiar Tail and finding it a lovely break from the more intense stories I often read. Do you read paranormal cozies?

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello loves! I’m greeting you from deep in a Doctor Who binge session :D. I finally got the husband excited about Who and we are already on Season 6 of the reboot. He has firm opinions about Tennant vs. Smith so I guess I married well, ha! I’ve continued to have a lot of work to do this week, but was still able to sneak in a bit of reading.

My Week

The DevourersI started The Devourers on audiobook since it was what was on my phone when I finished the last one and wow am I in love! I knew I needed to read this one, but the audiobook is also fantastic with an amazing Indian narrator who brings all the different dialects to life. It’s one of those stories where I have no idea what is going on yet, but am loving it all the same.

MerrowI’m also almost done with Merrow :D. I’m really enjoying it and just need to find enough time to finish the last hour or so of reading ;-).

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hellooooooo! Another intense week of work, but all good things! I’ve been fitting in reading where I can, but it is proving a bit challenging ;-).

My Week

MerrowI’ve been reading a lot of Merrow this week and really enjoying it. It’s soooooo gorgeous! I love creepy mermaid stories and Merrow are an Irish myth that blends selkies and mermaids.

The Dragon LordsI also have continued to make progress on my audiobooks, Fool’s Gold! It’s gotten a bit more serious than I expected a fantasy satire to get, but still quite enjoyable.

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Wow, what a week! I had 12 hour days of straight seminars and networking for this week’s conference and I’m seriously worn out. It was really really productive in terms of research and grad school and future job opportunities, but I want to take a week off to recuperate. I got a tiny bit of reading done before crashing into sleep each night, ha.

My Week

Magic BindsI’ve actually made great progress on Magic Binds and am really really enjoying it! It speaks to how much I was enjoying it since I gave up precious hours of sleep this week to read just a bit more ;-). I suspect I’ll finish shortly.

The Dragon LordsI am listening to The Dragon Lords on audio and loving it. It is so funny and just the perfect blend of satire and fun fantasy story. The narration really adds to it too since silly drunken speeches sound way more entertaining with a good narrator!

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello loves, I’m still alive! Sorry about missing so much last week, I got hit with a nasty cold/flu coming back from my conference and focused on sleeping instead of post writing ;-). I’m feeling much better now though and got some awesome reading done during recovery!

My Week

Heartless by Marissa MeyerI finished Heartless in one massive binge read last Friday and it was wonderful! I really didn’t expect to finish it so quickly given how thick it is, but I couldn’t stop reading :D.

Magic StudyI also started the audiobook of Magic Study finally! I hadn’t had a chance to add anything to my audiobook app, so downloaded this one from Audible since I’ve been meaning to continue this series for ages. I’m enjoying it for the most part, though I don’t think the narration is as good as the previous book. I’m also amazed how white-washed this cover is since Yelena is clearly described as having black hair and dark skin….

Magic BindsFinally, I decided to go with my strategy of reading the eARCs that appeal to me most to get me through this reading slump of the summer, so I’ve started Magic Binds! I’m not super far in since I haven’t had a lot of time to read on my Kindle, but I know if anyone can get me through a reading slump, it’s Kate ;-).
