Fandom of the Month Box Review – Mythical Creatures

Fandom of the Month Club Review

Fandom of the Month Club Review

Hello loves! Today I have something a bit different for you, though still fairly book related since it’s mythical creature jewelry :D. I’ve been eyeing Fandom of the Month for a while, but am not really into not knowing what fandom I’ll get each month. However, I saw that they were doing a special edition that was mythical creatures themed and the proceeds went to a no-kill shelter. This seemed a great chance to try them out with a theme that I knew I’d like (plus you know, hoping for a dragon, hehe).

I have to say, though, that I ended up a bit disappointed at the quality of the items included and really would have preferred fewer items that looked better. Update: I forgot to mention the price, it was $20!

Fandom of the Month Mythical Creatures

So here is everything that the box included! I’ll be talking about the jewelry individually, so first let’s chat about the non-jewelry items. Those are:

  • A card explaining the box and contact info – Pretty but doesn’t have anything about broken items, which will be relevant later.
  • A Dobby magnet – I love Dobby as much as the next HP-generation reader, but honestly he looks really creepy without a face. I know that’s the style of this company since I’ve seen other ones, but it doesn’t work for me here. Would anyone like it?
  • A SPEW sticker – At first I thought this was a temporary tattoo, but it looks like it’s actually a sticker, like for your computer, I assume? I don’t have anywhere that I can really put a sticker like this since my computer belongs to my lab. Anyone want it?
  • A Fantastic Beasts drawstring bag – Technically I guess this is packaging, but this is the item I’m most likely to actually keep and use honestly. I like the printing and bags are just so useful!

Okay, on to the jewelry!

Unicorn earrings, cat ring

First we have a set of unicorn earrings and a cat ring. These earrings don’t look like something I’ll ever wear, sadly. They are just too plain and young-looking to work for my style. I also have a severe nickel allergy so I’m very hesitant to put anything in my piercings that I’m not 100% positive is nickel-free through out. The cat ring is cute and it’s nice that it’s adjustable, but I’m confused how it’s a mythical creature? I love cats, sure, but not to the point of wearing a ring for them. These items are probably going to go to the daughter of a colleague since I think a young girl will enjoy them.

Owl Necklace

Next there is this cute owl pendant! I love the idea of this necklace since it is obviously a reference to Harry Potter and we all love a certain snowy owl. However, the execution doesn’t work for me at all. The main issue is the painting of the owl. You can see it best on the back of it, hence why I included that picture: what are those black spots? It looks like something dripped on the poor guy! I think I’m going to try to find an owl I like better (that isn’t blue too) to make this charm work better for me. I also really don’t like mixing silver and gold, so the gold cage with the silver chain bugs me. I’ll find a gold chain for it and be much happier. I have already used the nice long silver chain for other pendants though ;-).

Mythical creatures charm bracelet

Finally, the charm bracelet that I was oh so excited for! And then it broke…. The dragon charm is sitting in the middle since shortly after taking the bracelet out, the dragon’s ring snapped in half. I can repair it, sure, but that speaks volumes to the quality of these items. You can’t really tell from pictures, but these charms are really cheap quality. You can hear them crackle if any pressure is put on them, making me worry they are going to snap the second they catch on something. The dragon also doesn’t have a head, which is a rather odd artistic decision. I like the phoenix charm best though and bangle bracelets in general!

I think it’s clear from this experiment that this isn’t a box that is going to work for me. Imagine if it was a fandom I didn’t already love! This is honestly my fear with a lot of these subscription boxes: it seems like they have motivation to include lots of cheap items to make it look like there is a lot of value. I’d prefer fewer items that were actually things I would pick out for myself. Or was this just a bad box?

Have you tried Fandom of the Month Club? How did you find the quality of the items included? What other boxes do you like?

  1. That’s too bad! I love the idea of these subscription boxes, but the fact that they’re unlikely to always contain high quality items I can actually use has kept me from getting into them. Right now, I am really enjoying the OTSP Secret Sister book swap instead though. It’s a similar experience to a subscription box, but personalized for you. Plus, you get the fun of getting to know another blogger and of putting together a personalized box for someone else :)

  2. The only subscription box I’ve stuck with is the Firefly Crate from LootCrate. The few others I’ve tried have been disappointing with only a few items I’d want to keep. But my Firefly box I loved all but 1-2 items and most were worth more than the $40 I paid. Can hardly wait to see what’s in the next one!

So sorry the mythical creature box was so low quality. At least you got one thing you like and will use, but out of that many I’d be hugely annoyed I’d spent the money for just one thing.

  3. Perhaps the cat is that mythical kind that actually does what you tell it! Seriously though, there is nothi worse than crap quality jewellery when you’re paying good money for it.

  5. :( I hate when I try one and the quality sucks. It matters.

  6. I haven’t tried a subscription box because they are just so expensive! I’m sorry to hear this one wasn’t great. It sounded cool too! I’ve been debating which one to try, but it looks like it won’t be this one.

  7. That’s disappointing. :( I haven’t tried any of the subscription boxes yet; I’m afraid I’ll only wind up liking one or two things and it won’t be worth the price. And once you throw the threat of low quality pieces into the fray? Yeah, it probably won’t be happening any time soon. Thanks for sharing your experience with it, Anya!

  8. You didn’t mention the price, so that would be important to help me decide if I would ever buy this. If the money didn’t go towards a good cause, I’d definitely ask for my money back.

  9. I’ve actually ended up canceling my subscription. The only thing I really liked out of the boxes was the bag. Sometimes there is a nice necklace but I agree some of the quality is not the greatest. I give some of it to my daughter. I wouldnt mind a really nice item the bag and maybe one other thing.

  10. Aw that’s terribly disappointing about the poor quality. I’ve tried Ipsy and the Marvel collector’s box myself. Both of which I liked. I’ve been eyeing the owl crate, especially with June’s theme being Royalty. I think they might have some cool stuff in there for that.
