Harry Dresden--Wizard
Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses, or Other Entertainment.

Business has been slow. Okay, business has been dead. And not even of the undead variety. You would think Chicago would have a little more action for the only professional wizard in the phone book. But lately, Harry Dresden hasn't been able to dredge up any kind of work--magical or mundane.

But just when it looks like he can't afford his next meal, a murder comes along that requires his particular brand of supernatural expertise.

A brutally mutilated corpse. Strange-looking paw prints. A full moon. Take three guesses--and the first two don't count...

Strengths:

  • While I don’t much like Harry yet, I do like the various secondary characters that show up, especially Bob the animated skull. I’ve read a lot of urban fantasy and Bob is definitely still unique and fun. Plus I listened to the first book on audio, so Bob sounds like James Marsters which is always wonderful.
  • I like the premise of this series with Harry just trying to run a magical business and make ends meet. I’m sure things will get more epic, but for now it is fun to think of what a mundane life as a magic user would be.
  • I hear this series gets better at book three or four so despite my fairly negative review here, I am going to keep going and have hope ;-).

Weaknesses:

  • Harry is strangely obsessed with the breasts of the women around him and a description of attractiveness is required for everyone introduced.
  • Werewolves are no longer exciting but that’s not this book’s fault.
  • I don’t feel connected to the characters yet and want to see much more of the interesting aspects of this world.

Yes, keep going. This was my least favorite also. Now they are all on my keeper shelf. There is also Season 1 on DVD. The one and only season though.
