Alice Alexis Queensmeadow 12 rates three things most important: Mother, who wouldn’t miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. Father disappeared from Ferenwood with only a ruler, almost three years ago. But she will have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is Oliver whose own magic is based in lies and deceit. Alice must first find herself—and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss.

5 Stars

Note: I received an advanced copy of Furthermore from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

Strengths:

  • This is such a creative world. I absolutely loved the magical aspects and how Alice still has to deal with the typical things a kid deals with. That cover perfectly captures this book.
  • The writing is gorgeously whimsical. It is exactly what I loved about Valente’s Fairyland books with a bunch of new ideas. Mafi is a writer that I will be reading more from for sure.
  • The narration for the audiobook is wonderful! Because the book is written from the perspective of an observing narrator with opinions, listening to it as an audiobook is just perfect.

Weaknesses:

  • I’m not sure why they went with a male narrator for the audiobook given the female author and female main character. He did fine, but I think I would have liked a female narrator more.
  • The ending seemed to come up rather abruptly. This is partially because of the audiobook format that I didn’t notice that the book was going to end soon. But the plot arc definitely suddenly gets solved rather quickly.
