lona Andrews—#1 New York Times bestselling author of Magic Shifts—once again pulls readers into the dark and dangerous world of the Kate Daniels novels...

Shapeshifting tigress Dali Harimau may be a powerful healer and magic user, but she’s far from what might be called “normal”. She dislikes the violence and bloodshed that are a way of life for most of her kind, even going so far as to become a vegetarian. The last thing she wants is trouble...

Jim Shrapshire is an original, hardcore badass. A jaguar shifter, he’s been tasked with keeping Atlanta’s Cat Clan in line, which he does with swift and lethal force when necessary. His only soft spot is for the petite Dali, whose kindness he calls upon when he is injured.

When Dali is approached by a desperate woman whose grandmother has vanished, Jim is concerned enough to help investigate. But what they find may just be the end of them—an enemy whose skill in the dark arts is matched only by their willingness to kill anyone in their way...

Magic Steals was originally published in the anthology Night Shift.

  • SO CUTE!!! These two characters have been a favorite in the series since they were first introduced so this is literally a novella where you just want to grab the back of their heads and smoosh their faces together. They are so adorable!
  • Dali’s magic is awesome. I like that she is not only a weretiger but that shapeshifting comes from Balinese magic instead of the virus infecting most shapeshifters we have met. Beyond her shapeshifting, she also has purifying magic that was so fun to read more about.
  • Jim is an adorable trouble maker. I don’t generally think of Jim as a trouble maker since he is the chief of security to me now, but he is such a little scoundrel when he wants to be! He’s supposed to be hiding in Dali’s room when her mom suddenly drops by and he ‘accidentally’ keeps dropping things despite being a werejaguar, the stinker!
  • Creepy mystery – Things start off with one creepy new creature and then get just more mysterious for a while. I’m always impressed with how Andrews is able to come up with more new monsters to introduce while still making them fit in the world.
  • Well-paced – Since this is a novella, there is no extra fluff and every scene is either Jim and Dali figuring out their relationship or working on the mystery. This makes it a very addictive read!

  • My only hesitation is a non-Balinese person writing about their magic and culture, but I’m not an expert so I recommend checking some reviews from readers from that culture.
