Perfect State by Brandon Sanderson Audiobook {3 Stars}

Perfect State by Brandon Sanderson is a novella I’ve been meaning to read for a while. I have great faith in Sanderson for always writing something interesting and inventive, so I had no idea what Perfect State was actually about before jumping in headfirst. I have to say that what I got was not at all what I was expecting and while it is definitely inventive, I feel like Perfect State tries to pack in a bit too much for a novella.

God-Emperor Kairominas is lord of all he surveys. He has defeated all foes, has united the entire world beneath his rule, and has mastered the arcane arts. He spends his time sparring with his nemesis, who keeps trying to invade Kai's world.

Except for today. Today, Kai has to go on a date.

Forces have conspired to require him to meet with his equal—a woman from another world who has achieved just as much as he has. What happens when the most important man in the world is forced to have dinner with the most important woman in the world?

Strengths:

  • The narration of the audiobook is great as expected. I’m fairly certain it’s the same narrator used in many of Sanderson’s previous novellas and I’ve always found he does a good job, even with female voices.
  • The idea behind Perfect State is definitely fascinating. I loved thinking about what sort of world I would actually be happiest in and if I’d be okay knowing it was made just for my happiness.
  • Since Perfect State is about a fantasy world created for an individual to live out the perfect life via simulation, it blends fantasy and sci-fi in great ways. At first I thought it was going to be straight fantasy though with advanced magic, then I realized it was sci-fi with fantasy tucked in here and there.
  • Despite the short size, this novella still managed to surprise me. I’m not sure I liked the surprise, but I was surprised!

Weaknesses:

  • Like I said above, I love the IDEA of this story, but feel like a novella was way too short of a space to present it. There was so much hinted at that would have been great to explore related to the morality of the situation. I also think I would have enjoyed things much more if we were kept in the dark about the true nature of the fantasy world for a while longer, as could be done in a full length novel.
  • Audiobook is not really the best way to consume this particular story since there are a lot of special words to describe things in the fantasy world and trying to follow along without being able to see those words was confusing. It took me a while to figure out what was going on with vocabulary and that took away from my interest.

Summary:

Perfect State is definitely an interesting blend of fantasy and sci-fi and examines good questions about what would make every human truly happy. I would have liked a lot more room to explore these ideas, but I guess that’s what sequels are for!

  1. Some authors just have too many ideas for a world for a short story. I like sci-fi mixed with fantasy, but I’ve read too many virtual world / simulation books. I think this is one Sanderson I’ll skip, or at least put off.

  4. Man, Sanderson is a MACHINE pumping out books faster than I can keep track of. I often have a hard time with doing audio on straight up adult fantasy because of the names, terms and technical stuff – I feel like I need to ‘see’ the words. Despite having too much packed into a short book, I still want to read this…which can be said for every Sanderson book LOL!
