Planning to Pillage

New Feature: Planning to Pillage

I’ve been thinking for a while about how to showcase books that I think look interesting after I decided to stop doing book haul posts, since a fair number of people pointed out how useful it is to see what titles they should keep an eye out for. Similarly, I like the idea of Waiting on Wednesday and similar memes in that they are a chance to talk about a book you are newly excited for and think others should keep an eye on. Therefore, I’m bringing Planning to Pillage back to feature books that I’ve added to my lists either because I just found out about them, or because they showed up in my mailbox recently and look interesting.

(Covers link to Goodreads so you can add these too!)

Silver on the Road

Silver on the Road(Expected publication: October 6th 2015 by Saga Press) I’m really excited about what Saga Press is bringing out in its first year and Silver on the Road looks awesome! Apparently a girl signs up to work for the Devil in the wild west in exchange for learning magic.

Description: A heroic fantasy by an award-winning author about a young woman who is trained in the art of the sinister hand of magic, but at what price?

Isobelle, upon her sixteenth birthday, makes the choice to work for the devil in his territory west of the Mississippi. But this is not the devil you know. This is a being who deals fairly with immense (but not unlimited) power, who offers opportunities to people who want to make a deal, and they always get what they deserve. But his land is a wild west that needs a human touch, and that’s where Izzy comes in. Inadvertently trained by him to see the clues in and manipulations of human desire, Izzy is raised to be his left hand and travel circuit through the territory. As we all know, where there is magic there is chaos – and death.

A Week Without Tuesday

A Week Without Tuesday(Expected publication: February 2nd 2016 by Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) ) I absolutely adored Finding Serendipity and desperately hoped that there would be a sequel, so I’m freaking pumped for A Week Without Tuesday! Look how cute that cover is!!

Description: Something is broken in the land of story. Real and imaginary worlds are colliding-putting everything and everyone in grave peril. Tuesday and Baxterr, at the request of the Librarian, and with the help of Vivienne Small, venture to find the Gardener-the one person who can stop this catastrophe. On their way, they’ll meet friends and foes, and discover strengths they didn’t know they had. Will they be able to save the land of story?

Soundless(Expected publication: November 10th 2015 by Razorbill) First off, how gorgeous is that cover with a model who actually fits the character description?? Also, a village that has never had sound, what????? Soundless sounds (haha) like it could be really unique, so of course I need it.

Description: From Richelle Mead, the #1 internationally bestselling author of Vampire Academy and Bloodlines, comes a breathtaking new fantasy steeped in Chinese folklore.

For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.

When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Fei’s home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation.

But soon Fei is awoken in the night by a searing noise, and sound becomes her weapon.

Richelle Mead takes readers on a triumphant journey from the peak of Fei’s jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiugo, where a startling truth and an unlikely romance will change her life forever…

A Gathering of Shadows

A Gathering of Shadows(Expected publication: February 23rd 2016 by Tor) I’m sure most of you already know about the sequel to A Darker Shade of Magic, but in case you hadn’t, yey! I’m not sure how I feel about this cover with (I assume) Lila’s outfit, but I’m excited to read it all the same ;-).

Description: Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries—a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again—meaning that another London must fall.

What are you excited about reading lately? Do you like this feature?

  1. These all look great, I have Finding Serendipity on my shelf and need to read it – but A Week Without Tuesday looks adorable.

  2. A Week Without Tuesday looks cute! (And makes me want to read it just so I can start a list of books with “Tuesday” in the name so I can post that list on Booked til *Tuesday*. … It sounds much better in my head.) And drat, I still need to read A Darker Shade of Magic. Hurry up and process it, library!

I love all your pics except the mg one, I dont’ read that genre very much… I’m especially excited about Soundless since I love books set in China.

    • Hehe, fine more MG for me! :-P I was just thinking how few fantasy set in China I’ve heard of, such a shame!

  4. Oh I really like this idea for showcasing books. I lvoe doign book hauls for that exact reason and it’s so fun to see what books others have their eyes on. This is the first time I’ve heard of Silver on the Road, but it sounds really interesting, will have to check that out. The cover for Week Without Tuesday looks really cute! I just pre-ordered Soundless last week, I am really excited for that book! It sounds so original!

    • Thanks! Yey, I’m so excited for Soundless, though so far I’ve resisted pre-ordering since I tend to forget what I pre-order D:

Awesome new feature. Book hauls are a bit difficult, because there are books that I want to point out and discuss, like when I find an interesting novel at Half Price, or I stumbled onto something new at Book Outlet.

    • It looks so great!!! Thanks! Yeah, I like this approach since it gives me the chance to focus on whatever I’m excited about and however many I want haha

  6. I like this idea! It’s nice that you actually have a description of the books, rather than just a picture showing off the 50 million books you got this week. :p My only suggestion would be to include a Goodreads link so we can easily add the books to our lists as well. :D

  7. A gathering of shadows, I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE.
I also love the look and sound (hehe) from Soundless.
Middle Grades always have the best covers :)

    • Pun! :-P Middle grades do have the best covers, and the interior illustrations of book one were just as cute!

  8. I’m so excited for Soundless! Plus, it’s a standalone, so I won’t be getting into a six book series like I have been with her other books :D I still need to read ADSOM… but I’m already counting down till AGoS as well haha.

  9. I’ve been waiting for Silver on the Road for months, Gilman is a fantastic writer. Soundless looks fascinating, I’ll add that to my wish list.
