Monsters, magic and the supernatural combine in this sequel to Wake of Vultures, in which a young woman must defeat the evil hiding beneath the surface.

Nettie Lonesome made a leap -- not knowing what she'd become. But now the destiny of the Shadow is calling.

A powerful alchemist is leaving a trail of dead across the prairie. And the Shadow must face the ultimate challenge: side with her friends and the badge on her chest or take off alone on the dangerous mission pulling her inexorably toward the fight of her life.

When it comes to monsters and men, the world isn't black and white. What good are two wings and a gun when your enemy can command a conspiracy of ravens?

Conspiracy of Ravens continues the exciting journey begun in Wake of Vultures as Nettie Lonesome discovers that she, and the world, are more than what they seem.

Winter is the most deadly season in Temperance. And it’s not just because of the fierce cold. Evil is stalking the backcountry of Yellowstone, killing wolves and leaving only their skins behind.

As the snow deepens, Geologist Petra Dee is staring her own death in the face, while former Hanged Man Gabriel struggles with his abrupt transition back to mortality. The ravens and the rest of the Hanged Men are gone, and there are no magical solutions to Petra’s illness or Gabriel’s longing for what he’s lost…and what he stands to lose now.

Meanwhile, there’s a new sheriff in town. Sheriff Owen Rutherford has inherited the Rutherford ranch and the remnants of the Alchemical Tree of Life. He’s also a dangerously haunted man, and his investigation of Sal’s death is leading him right to Gabriel.

It’s up to Petra, her coyote sidekick Sig, and Gabriel to get ahead of both Owen and the unnatural being stalking them all – before the trail turns deathly cold.

Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson eARC {3.5 Stars}

Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson is the third of the Wax and Wayne Mistborn novels and follows closely on the heels of Shadows of Self, my personal favorite of these books. It was really no surprise that Bands of Mourning didn’t quite live up to my absolute love of Shadows of Self, but after a slow start, the last third is epic. It is clear something major is brewing and I can’t wait to find out more!

Note: I received an advanced copy of Bands of Mourning from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

With The Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self, Brandon Sanderson surprised readers with a New York Times bestselling spinoff of his Mistborn books, set after the action of the trilogy, in a period corresponding to late 19th-century America.

Now, with The Bands of Mourning, Sanderson continues the story. The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metalminds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands, as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate. Along the way he discovers hints that point to the true goals of his uncle Edwarn and the shadowy organization known as The Set.

Wake of Vultures by Lila Bowen Audiobook {5 Stars}

Wake of Vultures by Lila Bowen is the first in a new series set in a ‘weird west’ that blends Western and fantasy with a blissfully diverse and prickly heroine and her Coyote sidekicks. I absolutely adored this audiobook both because the narration is fantastic and because the story is everything I wanted. If you want to put your money where your mouth is for #WeNeedDiverseBooks and read an addicting story, get Wake of Vultures.

Note: I received an audio copy of Wake of Vultures from the publisher. Listening to a book does impact my reading experience.

A rich, dark fantasy of destiny, death, and the supernatural world hiding beneath the surface.

Nettie Lonesome lives in a land of hard people and hard ground dusted with sand. She's a half-breed who dresses like a boy, raised by folks who don't call her a slave but use her like one. She knows of nothing else. That is, until the day a stranger attacks her. When nothing, not even a sickle to the eye can stop him, Nettie stabs him through the heart with a chunk of wood, and he turns into black sand.

And just like that, Nettie can see.

But her newfound sight is a blessing and a curse. Even if she doesn't understand what's under her own skin, she can sense what everyone else is hiding -- at least physically. The world is full of evil, and now she knows the source of all the sand in the desert. Haunted by the spirits, Nettie has no choice but to set out on a quest that might lead to her true kin... if the monsters along the way don't kill her first.

Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson ARC {5 Stars}

Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson is a fantastic sequel that brings back what we loved about Mistborn while adding a distinct western flavor to keep things interesting. If you haven’t read The Alloy of Law yet, check out my review of that instead and jump in to this great series! What I most want to emphasize though is that while I enjoyed The Alloy of Law, I loved Shadows of Self and am delighted to see Sanderson continuing to build this series into a truly unique fantasy experience. Just be sure to brush up on the events of the Mistborn trilogy and Alloy of Law first!

Note: I received an advanced copy of Shadows of Self from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

Shadows of Self shows Mistborn’s society evolving as technology and magic mix, the economy grows, democracy contends with corruption, and religion becomes a growing cultural force, with four faiths competing for converts.

This bustling, optimistic, but still shaky society now faces its first instance of terrorism, crimes intended to stir up labor strife and religious conflict. Wax and Wayne, assisted by the lovely, brilliant Marasi, must unravel the conspiracy before civil strife stops Scadrial’s progress in its tracks.

Shadows of Self will give fans of The Alloy of Law everything they’ve been hoping for and, this being a Brandon Sanderson book, more, much more.
