Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-).

Spoils and Tribute was inspired by Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

I have been a bad bad blogger and not posted a book haul update in at least two weeks. I took pictures last week so that I could put away some books, but then craziness happened and I had no chance of getting posts up this weekend! Therefore, have pictures of lots of books!

 Taste of Darkness Book Holder
Spoils and Tribute

I got a couple of NetGalley approvals over the past two weeks (and a couple rejections *shakes fist*), but I discovered after being approved for NIL that there isn’t a .mobi D: I refuse to read books on my computer, so I had to let them know that I wouldn’t be able to review it unless I got a physical copy *sigh*. Anyone have one that I could borrow/swap for? Also yey Taste of Darkness *hurriedly reads Touch of Power*

What is that strange device on my horribly chipped nail you ask?? That is a bit of plastic from a 3D printer that is designed to hold open books so your pinkie finger doesn’t get tired :D. My labmate got a 3D printer last week for printing lab supplies and he offered to print me something for putting up with the constant noise and people coming by to ask about it *grumbles and puts in headphones*. I haven’t tested this thing for long periods of time yet, but it seems to work well :D.

Finally, a friend was cleaning out ARCs and offered me Not a Drop to Drink and False Prince. Since they are both on the TBR wishlist, I of course snagged!

The two Champions are both signed and one is for the giveaway :D. I also have been a long time fan of Hyperbole and a Half and was very excited to support Allie by getting her book! I already finished it and passed it on to Mr. Boy’s sister who is also a fan :). I needed to read Indigo Awakening since I have the sequel to review, so I borrowed that from the library (already finished it and disliked it greatly….). Finally, Prospero’s Children is an old-school YA mermaid book (from before YA was YA and was instead juvenile fiction) that my bookseller friend spotted. She grabbed a beautiful used hardcover with an awesome cover under the dust jacket and then ordered a paperback for me to buy. I’m so excited for this one since I’m really hoping it’s a great mermaid book! Also the rest of the series focuses on different mythical creatures for each book :D.

What have you gotten recently?

    • Hehe, they are signed copies so I had to get one for giveaway :D No worries, I completely understand ;-) Hence why I’m responding so late >.>

  2. Eeeep, Maria V. Snyder! I still need to read ALL her series but she’s the author I’m most excited to get into atm! And I ADORE that page holder!! How clever and practical :D The False Prince, Not A Drop to Drink and the Legend series are ALL on my TBR as well! Fantastic haul Anya, enjoy all your spoils!

    • Mwahaha *pets hoard of books* ;-) You do! I was nervous since I haven’t had great experiences with Harlequin, but Harlequin MIRA seems to have much different priorities that Harlequin Teen

  3. That little plastic holder thingy is awesome! Both my roommate and I want to know if your friend is making them to sell, and thus how much do they charge?

  4. Oh man, I can’t wait to get my hands on Hyperbole and a Half. I’m such a big fan of hers. Enjoy all your books, and have a good week! My STS

  5. Oh man this is awesome, I really hope you enjoy all of them!

    Have a great weekend :)
    Check out my haul here!

  6. Ugh Indigo Awakening. I had big problems with that one as well. It had so much potential but just fell short. Interested to hear what you’ve got to say about the sequel though! And yay to your signed Champions! I still have to read Prodigy but it’s on my shelf waiting for me to have the time.
Also, 3D printers. They are like these grand, miraculous things to me. The idea that you’ve got one standing in your apartment with people randomly dropping by is so… mundane :P Sounds like something from Big Bang Theory haha ^^
    Anyway, happy reading!

    • Agreed! The sequel is just as bad I must admit :-/ Everything that annoyed about about Indigo Awakening :(

Hehe, office, not apartment fortunately! But still, it’s just always going printing things like cell cultures D:

  7. CHAMPION!!! So excited to finally get to read that! I am also jealous of your copy of not a drop to drink, it’s on my wishlist!
I hope you enjoy all your reads. My STS.

  10. I love the book holder thing. That seems perfect for bigger books especially, or hardbacks, where it’s difficult to keep the pages open when you’re holding it one handed.

  11. I think I’ve seen one of those finger thingies before. I always wondered if they were worth it. It seems like it would get uncomfortable, but still… seems like a nice thing to have. I really want that Hyperbole and Half book. People have said it’s totally worth it. Enjoy!

  12. I don’t blame you for not wanting to read NIL on your computer. Just in case you don’t already know, all of Macmillan’s teen titles are that way which is why I rarely request them from NetGalley. I hope you are able to get a physical copy of that one.

    • Good to know! I finally caved and bought a Kobo tablet since there are a couple of EW titles that are ADE as well that I simply must read!

  13. I wish I had Nil. I’ve not requested it because I’m not 100% sure it will be something I like and I’ve not seen any early reviews. Very, very curious about it though. Great haul! Cool book holder open thingy! I think 3D printers are awesome and would love to play with one at some point. Can’t wait to see what you think of Not a Drop.

  14. A taste of darkness! wow! i’m a fan of maria snyder. new follower here. :)

  15. OMG I want one of those! That’s such a great idea. I’m a big fan of 3D printing. Wish I had access to one.

Coincidentally enough, I just found Allie’s blog today, and am going to hunt down her book next.

    • I was very surprised when one showed up at my office since my labmate decided to spend his equipment money on one, haha. They are using them to print all sorts of crazy things like food and cells!

Yey! Prepare to lose a lot of time to catching up :D

  16. Hehe, I like the name of your meme.

I have lots of envy for your book opener. I’ve bought something like that before from a bookstore, but it was too tiny to really be effective. Great haul!

    • Thanks! I thought long and hard to come up with it ;-)

This one is actually a little big for me it seems, my thumb keeps slipping out D:

  17. Not a drop to drink is on my Christmas wish list, I really hope to get it :D Champion is also a book I can’t wait to read! Enjoy!

Ooh, wish I could help on the “Nil” problem, but alas, no go. Any chance you can “tweak” the format?

I’ve been trying to cut back on my book buying and have been, by and large, succeeding. Until my library had its annual book sale. Cue failure. On the bright side, among my box of books, I found Ruta Sepetys’ “Out of the Easy,” a practically brand new hardcover, for $1. Score! And then I got sucked in by a BetterWorldBooks children’s book sale. Mostly books I’ve already read, but still looking forward to adding them to the collection.

I’ll be interested to see your thoughts on “Not a Drop to Drink.” I’ve heard great things about it, but confirmation would be nice. ;)

    • I’ve looked online places but it seems that any tweaking would be illegal and a pain *sigh* However, I recently decided to take the plunge and get a tablet, so I’ll just read it on that!

I actually specifically skipped my library’s book sale because I knew that I would buy so many more books than I need! Nice! It’s amazing when you find new hardcovers at library sales :D

  20. I have the Hyperbole and a Half book! I adore Allie so much!! I want to read it on the side.

My arrivals for Tuesday are Unravel Me (Shatter Me #2) by Tahereh Mafi, The Crimson League & The Magic Council both by Victoria Grefer, and last but not least…… World After by Susan Ee!!!! I didn’t go crazy this time. I’ve read both TCL and TMC already in ebook but I just had to get the paperbacks for my bookshelf.

P.S. If you want to do a giveaway for World After, I have an extra one coming Tuesday. I forgot that I’d already preordered it last month also. I just don’t want to return it to Amazon or cancel the order. I’d love to just give it away!!! If so, email me at thomaslakeisha27(at)yahoo(dot)com.

    • Yey!! I totally understand the need to get physical books for your shelves, that’s basically my entire wishlist, haha.

      Oo, *emails*

  22. Ok, I admit that book holder looks pretty awesome. You have to keep the feedback going, because I know hand cramps have stalled many nights of reading for me when I have a big old fantasy book in my hands

    • Right! My elbows get so tired. So far I haven’t figured out the right way to hold it since my thumb is now the thing holding the book and that gets tired too, haha

  23. 3D printers still seem like magic to me :)

The False Prince is INCREDIBLE! The last book comes out in a few months and I’m torn: part of me is OMGCAN’TWAIT while the other part doesn’t want to series to end!

    • They are pretty magic! They basically just lay down tiny layers of melted material in perfect form ya know?

Oo, that’s awesome to hear, I’ll have to try to fit it in soon!

  24. I got Not a Drop to Drink a while ago but I haven’t read it yet. Every time I see it on someone’s blog I get excited for it all over again. I’m too easily distracted though, so I never get around to it. SOON.

    • I snagged an ARC and did a giveaway because I knew I wouldn’t read it in time, and then I snagged this ARC and am determined to read it sometime… soon…. gah so many books!

  25. Hi Anya. I see you use BookLikes. I’m not familiar with them. Are they better than Goodreads?

I read Not a Drop to Drink and it was . . . wow.

    • Yup, so Goodreads decided a couple months ago that they would not allow reviewers to comment on author behavior and they deleted reviews that had comments on author behavior. I’m not okay with that decision, so I’ve switched to BookLikes. It takes some adjustment, but it works well for me now!
