Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). Spoils and Tribute is inspired by Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

This week was a pretty strange one since I kind of went crazy last week and now all the things I ordered have shown up >.>. I think my hibernation instincts triggered a shopping frenzy ;-). I’m a bear you see :-P. This is also multiple weeks!

HarperCollins ARCs Tin Star

Fragile Brilliance  A Creature of Moonlight The Taking

My bloggy friend got a package of duplicate HarperCollins ARCs that she knew I was eyeing so she let me steal some of them :D. I’m planning to read the digital ARCs I have of them and then do a giveaway along with an early thoughts post for each, so keep your eye out! Also Uninvited has pretty gold things on the cover in her hair :D. Tin Star showed up late in the week so had to have it’s own picture, so excited for more aliens! I’m also really excited to have gotten an eARC of Fragile Brilliance from the author (thanks Tammy!!) and approved for Mark of the Dragonfly and A Creature of Moonlight, middle grade and dragons, here I come! And I couldn’t resist downloading The Taking anymore so it’s now on my Kindle as well ;-).

Kobo Arc 7

See, a little bit crazy right? Let’s start with the tablet >.>. I decided a couple weeks ago that I was tired of not being able to read certain eARCs (Macmillan and Houhton Mifflin, I’m looking at you) on my Kindle because those pubs aren’t a fan of Amazon. Therefore, I ordered a Kobo Arc 7 so that I can finally read NIL and A Creature of Moonlight! It took me hours to figure out (with customer support, who were useless) how to get NG and EW books on my device, but I did finally *sigh*. I really want to like Kobo the company more, but they haven’t been all that great when it comes to user experience I’m afraid. However, I’m liking reading on my tablet so far :).

The Exiled Queen, Relic, Warbreaker

Harry Potter Shirt My Favorite Movie is Books

Mini X-mas Tree

Let’s see, the next stack is because I walked into Schuler Books, saw Warbreaker was $5 for a new hardcover and had to get it (since I don’t have a copy yet!). Then my bookstore friend handed me Relic because it’s fantasy archeology :D. And I’ve been wanted to continue the Chima series for a while! The Harry Potter shirt (sorry for the horrible picture D:) is from Schuler Books as well because they decided to make some book-themed shirts and omg I love it! had a book themed shirt (though that grammatical error annoys me), so I got that as well >.>. I needed some new nerdy shirts anyway! I also grabbed that mini-fiber-optic Christmas tree at Schuler because it’s so cute and pretty and I don’t really decorate for the holidays >.>.

The Pirate's Wish, Scent of Magic, Shades of Earth

Finally, I spotted Shades of Earth at my library for $5 hardcover, and had to get it! I previously requested my library get The Pirate’s Wish, so when I saw it, I felt the need to check it out since I was the one who asked for it, haha. I think I can fit it in over the holidays though ;-). And even though I’m actually waiting for Scent of Magic to come in over my library’s loan program, it’s taking too long so I just bought a copy >.>. This is what hanging out at a bookstore to entertain your friend who works there does!

What have you gotten recently?

  2. By the way I can’t wait to hear what you think of Uninvited – interesting cover I do say. You are lucky you have such awesome friends who hook you up. Really a whole box of extras – I really think their distribution system at Harper Teen is just strange I don’t understand why they send entire boxes to people when you know they won’t/can’t get through them all.

    • It’s partially that she does a lot of giveaways so they know that she’ll give them away which is good promotion. It’s also just that she’s on multiple lists by accident and they seem to be too scattered to fix it even though she keeps reminding them :-/. Apparently it’s even good promotion for HC for her to just have them in her book haul posts because it gets the books on other people’s radars *shrugs*

  3. You made out like a bandit this week! I loved Warbreaker – but then I don’t think Sanderson could write a book I wouldn’t enjoy.

A Creature of Moonlight can’t be read on the kindle huh? Well dagnabit I guess I won’t be requesting that one. I just can’t stand reading on a device other than my kindle it hurts my eyes to read on my ipad. And I am not buying an entirely new reader. Guess I’ll see if I can request a print copy though that might be a long shot *sigh*

    • Hehe so agreed! I was really happy to find it since I had gotten it from the library when I read it ;-) That cover is so pretty!

I figured out how to get it on my Kindle actually, so I could help you if you need it :) Just email me since it’s a bit round-a-bout

  4. Wow that’s some good deals! I don’t think I heard of some of these titles but I’m a sucker for pretty covers so I’m sure I would have bought them right away lol

Hope you enjoy them all! Have a great day! :)

    Check out my STS!

  5. Awesome t-shirts! I’ve been wanting more bookish clothing myself so I’m looking for some things to put on my wishlist :)

  6. How did I not see that t-shirt? I LOVE IT! I wants it. That’s a lot of books! I didn’t know Tin Star was about aliens :D

  7. Ooh, congrats on the ARCs! I’m looking forward to reading Cruel Beauty myself.

  10. I’m curious about the Cassandra Rose Clarke one. I just finished “The Mad Scientist’s Daughter” and was amazed by it, even if it did make me sob on the metro in public as I read the last few chapters. I’m hoping to read more of her work in the near future. :)

  11. So many awesome books (and swag) this week! I want the movie/book t-shirt now. Happy reading!

  12. Oh my goodness I want to steal Death Sworn and Cruel Beauty! Want to read both of those so much!
That’s cool that you got the Kobo but it sucks about the customer service. I usually have to wait days for them to even get back to me by email. I still have one dead Kobo in my room lol.
I hope you enjoy all your new stuff and have a great week!

    • Do you do EW eARCs? They’re up there :D

I actually have decided to return my Kobo >.> *hides spoils section* But I’m getting a Glo around the holidays, I just didn’t like the tablet at all, ugh.

  13. Ahhh! Super nice haul. I might like the t-shirts best, because really, you can never have enough geeky t-shirts.

I’m reading The Scent of Magic right now myself, should finish it up tonight. I meant to ask you on another post – how do you like BookLikes? I signed up like a lot of people did during the Goodreads fiasco, but I haven’t started using it yet.

    • Right? They are the most comfortable too :D Nice soft fabric <3

I quite like BookLikes, though it's database isn't as well maintained as Goodreads since they don't have librarians yet. They are super responsive and adding new features every week based on what users are asking for, so I'm looking forward to having influence on what they add as well :)

Yey, I'm on page 300ish of Scent of Magic, gotta finish tomorrow! Are you going to be reading an ARC of Taste of Darkness?

      • I keep meaning to check BookLikes out, and start using it, but I’m so behind on everything else. Sigh. Very cool that they are adding features readers want, though!

I actually had Scent of Magic from Amazon Vine, and forgot it was the second in a trilogy. So I had to read Touch of Power first, and now finished Scent of Magic. Kind of meh on it, but trying to formulate my review today. I do have Taste of Darkness on hold at the library, so I’ll be the first person to read it on release day.

        • You might as well pop over and start your import of your Goodreads books if nothing else, since it can take a couple of days but then it’d be there for you :)

Oo, can you answer my questions about Amazon Vine? How does it work??

  14. Awesome haul. Death Sworn looks like it will be a good read. Come check out my haul as well.

  15. Ooh, I’ve been looking forward to Death Sworn and Cruel Beauty, so I hope those go well. The Pirate’s Wish is the sequel to The Assassin’s Curse, right? I read the first one and, much as I wanted to like it, was not sucked in. Maybe the second will be better?

Yes, hibernation shopping got me this month, too. Mostly through my library book sale and a couple of Better World Books specials, but I got a couple good additions to the home library from them. Now I just need to find shelves to put them all on.

    • Indeed it is! I was a bit annoyed with the plotting of the first one but am such a completionist, haha.

I really need more shelves *sigh*

  16. I emailed Tor, at least (though not the other MacMillan divisions) and let them know about the NetGalley problem and how they weren’t being so Kindle friendly. The problem got fixed, or at least it did for me. If you’re still having problems with Kindle access for their books, shoot them a quick email and they should get the problem sorted out.

    Happy reading!
