Spoils, Tribute, and Planning to Pillage

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently (my version of Stacking the Shelves). I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). Planning to pillage is just my version of Waiting on Wednesday where I share books that have caught my eye!

The past couple of weeks have been slow due to the holidays, but then this week all of a sudden I have found myself with a massive inflow of books. This is mostly due to my friends being AWESOME and giving me lots of pretties :D.

Night Shift IMG_2162

  • Night Shift (Penguin, Solicited) – I read everything by Ilona Andrews okay?? This looks like a fun collection of short stories since it is short and concentrated, I’m excited to discover some new authors too!
  • Woven (Scholastic, Unsolicited) – This looks like a cool middle grade and I had thought about requesting it, so this was a pleasant surprise!
  • Beneath (Scholastic, Unsolicited) – Ummmmm, this doesn’t quite look like my cup of tea, anyone know anything?
  • Nnewts (Scholastic, Unsolicited) – I don’t tend to read graphic novels so this one isn’t really for me either :(.
  • The Traders’ War (Tor, Unsolicited) – I have read sadly no Stross and I do wan to fix that, but I think this is a set of sequels?

The Witches of Echo Park Crimson Bound Magonia  Superheroes Anonymous The Arctic Code Illusionarium The Awakened Kingdom Darkwalker Dr. Critchlore's School for Minions

  •  Witches of Echo Park (Penguin, NetGalley) – Tara! This looks like lots of fun and I’m excited to read and review it for the tour!
  • Crimson Bound (Harper, Edelweiss) – Precioussssssss! I’m so excited to read this!
  • Magonia (Harper, Edelweiss) – I wasn’t going to download this one and then I saw Gaiman blurbed it and I caved >.>. Plus, I like weird fantasy!
  • Superheroes Anonymous (Harper, Edelweiss) – I got an email pitching this one and downloaded it because it sounded fun, but I wasn’t sure I’d be able to fit it in. Then I was in the mood for something random and ended up really enjoying it :D.
  • The Arctic Code (Harper, Edelweiss) – I love trying out random middle grade since it is a low time commitment if I’m unsure ;-).
  • lllusionarium (Harper, Edelweiss) – It sounds soooooo cool and it’s pretty!
  • The Awakened Kingdom (Orbit, NetGalley) – I’ve only read the first Hundred Thousand Kingdoms book, but I loved it and really want to get to the other two. This is a novella pitched as a companion, so I’m hoping I can read it without having read the second two!
  • Darkwalker (Penguin, NetGalley) – I got an email pitching the second book but had a link to the first so I’m excited to start this series! I’ve had good luck reading random series from Penguin :D.
  • Dr. Critchlore’s School for Minions – (Abrams, NetGalley) – Yey adorable middle grade! Minion school :D

Endsinger and A Thousand Pieces of You

I found Endsinger a couple of days before release and thought I’d already have it read, oh well, soon though :D. I also tried out taking the picture of the books on my bookshelf, but you can’t really see it in the background, ha.

Legion: Skin Deep

I bought the audiobook of Legion: Skin Deep because it’s free on Audible! I love this series of shorts :D.

I went on a bit of a book buying splurge and got a few books that I’d been thinking about getting nice hardcovers in for a while ;-). I didn’t take pictures of my BookOutlet haul before shelving them, sorry! And yes that’s the UK version of Rothfuss’ new book because it’s pretty :D.

IMG_2165 Book Earrings

And now we start the “my friends are awesome section” with this giant pile of books that I was given! There are a lot of oldies but goodies in there including an entire fantasy series I’d never heard of, so I’m excited! Also my awesome friend got me these book earrings she spotted on Etsy <3!!!!

Storm Thief IMG_2168 IMG_2169

And this is what happens when you’re friends with a book blogger who is moving! A whole bunch of ARCs of varying ages, some new, some old, all to be added to the giveaway stack eventually. Which do you want to get your hands on first? (That’s Iron Trial at the bottom of the first stack.) Also she handed me Storm Thief saying she loved it and wants me to have a copy, ha. I love book friends!!!!

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. new to the wishlist)

Silver in the Blood

I just found out about Jessica Day George’s new series and I’m so so pumped :D.

And sticking with the theme of new series from favorite author, Radiance by Catherine Valente! I have no idea what “decopunk pulp SF alt-history space opera mystery set in a Hollywood” means, but I’ll give it a try!

What have you gotten recently? What are you looking forward to?

  1. <3 Glad you liked the earrings!!

  2. Woven looked good to me too and almost all of your egalleys look awesome! I heard you can read the Awakened Kingdom without reading any of the other books, so I think you’re good. Wow you have awesome friends! That was so nice of her!

I recently got Vicious and Steelheart. :)
Molly Mortensen recently posted…Top Ten 2014 Books I Read this YearMy Profile

    • Oh excellent! I’m nearly done listening to the audiobook of Broken Kingdoms so I think I’ll read Awakened Kingdom right away since I love her writing so much.

      Yey, enjoy Vicious and Steelheart!!!

  3. So many books this week! You’ll need a new bookshelf for Christmas at this rate, lol.

  4. I almost requested Crimson Bound since I’ve been on the lookout for more Red Riding Hood retellings…but I stopped myself. You’ll have to tell me if it’s similar to or completely different from Hodge’s first book. ;)

    • Will do! You didn’t like the amount of romance I take it? I suspect that might be part of her style, but we’ll see!

      • I guess you could say I didn’t like the amount of romance in that the plot kind of disappeared in favor of the romance in Cruel Beauty. I don’t mind romance throughout as long as there’s other stuff going on. (And I’m still a little ticked the big, bad assassin was a complete failure at doing her job; and then, when that plan no longer seemed to be a good idea, did nothing else. Except romance. :P )

  5. And you have room to be jealous of other bloggers who get books HOW???? HMMMMM MISSSY? You can’t be jealous when you get crazy insane hauls like that and other folks (like me LOL) haven’t gotten bookmail in more months then I care to count. Course I guess I haven’t requested any but thats besides the point! I foam at the mouth with jealousy here. So many awesome titles you got!

  6. I got an ARC of the sequel to Darkwalker, which I loved! So good choice for picking that up :D
Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum recently posted…YA Weekend: Talon by Julie KagawaMy Profile

    • Yey, that makes me excited! I didn’t want to request the sequel too until I read the first one, but hopefully I’ll read it soon ;-)

  7. Endsinger is supposed to be horribly painful on the feels, but I haven’t even started book one! We’ll see what happens, haha.

Trial by Fire was a big standout for me this year; I really hope you love it!

Ohhh Tandem and Tether – I’ve been trying to decide if I want to read them, but always forget about it when I’m at the bookstore. Will be awaiting a verdict from you ;)
Kayla @ The Thousand Lives recently posted…Weekly Update #56 (December 7) – The Black Friday HaulMy Profile

    • Yeah, I think that’s why I haven’t made it past the prologue D:

I already read and loved Trial by Fire and just needed the pretty hardcover ;-) Book two now!!!!

I’m not sure if I’ll be reading Tandem and Tether since the reviews for book one didn’t sound great, I might let someone else love them instead :)

  8. Oh my goodness. That is a haul. Your TBR pile must be taking over the house. :D I got the anthology with Singh and Andrews too and so far I’m enjoying it. Happy reading!
Bea @Bea’s Book Nook recently posted…Sunday Book Share #118My Profile

    • It has officially moved off the shelves and onto the floor D: Yey, I’m glad you’re enjoying the anthology so far, I am pumped to read it!

  9. WOW what an amazing haul…..I think this will take me a while to go through and see what books I can add to my wishlist,

I hope you the ones you manage to read, and my haul can be found here

  10. WOW, these are lots of books! And those earrings are awesome. I almost went to NetGalley to check if they still had some of the ARCs, but they have a very helful / guilt inducing number now that tells you how many you have on your shelf, so I stopped myself.

    Enjoy all your books!
Hellen recently posted…Review/Reseña – The Power Twins (El misterio del planeta de los gusanos) – Ken FollettMy Profile

    • Thanks! Hehe, yeah, NetGalley is very dangerous ;-) You can just submit feedback saying that you didn’t have the chance to read it though, that’s what I do to keep the guilt away!

  11. CRIMSON BOUND *pets pretty cover* I’m so exited, but so far I’ve managed to wait. It’s sitting on my e-reader, calling me. I think I will fall for it soon enough. I also got Magonia and I was disappointed by Illusionarium :( A thousand pieces of you has one of the prettiest covers this year. Mortalheartmortalheart, my precious. I’m so excited about Silver in the blood ;D

    Happy reading!

    • Haha, I’m right there with you on Crimson Bound! I just want to read all my eARCs RIGHT NOW!

Oh now, sorry to hear about Illusionarium, will you be posting a review soon or do you wait to post them?

  12. YAY for Dealing with Dragons! Gotta own that physical copy, amirite? I must’ve missed The Witches of Echo Park on Netgalley…dang it! Next time I’ll be more on top of things.
Danya @ Fine Print recently posted…Review: Grave Witch by Kalayna PriceMy Profile

    • I haven’t read it yet! I’m actually borrowing it so that I can finally finish the series, haha! I think Witches of Echo park might have been an invite read, you should totally request it by email if you want though!

  13. YES YES YES YES YESSSSSSSSS at Silver in the Blood and Radiance. I am in a desperate need for them. More so for Radiance because that synopsis has EVERYTHING I love.
Cee recently posted…HOLY, MOTHER COVER! | Changes in Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew SmithMy Profile

    • I’m so freaking excited for both! Though I have to admit that Silver in the Blood is calling to me most right now since I’m in a younger story mood haha!

  14. Adelynne Chang says:

So many books! And those earrings are so cute! :D

I’m looking forward to reading Magonia and Etiquette and Espionage the most. Have fun reading!

    • Thanks :D I need to find more excuses to wear the earrings haha!

It sounds like i should definitely have a giveaway for Magonia then huh? :D

  15. Holy… wow. So. Many. Books. Need a hand reading them all? *lol* ;)

I missed the Lotus War train but am jumping on now that the final book is out and every review I’ve read has sung nothing but high praise for it. How did you like Stormdancer?
Sara L. recently posted…Stacking The Shelves Vol. 4: Tea with Tris and Four (Sort Of)My Profile

    • Always! Hence all the giveaways ;-)

I’ll warn you that Stormdancer is a little slow and rocky, but Kristoff’s writing REALLY matures in Kinslayer and it blew me away completely!

  16. oooh Crash and Talon and Study in Scarlet and Nethergrim! So many of these are at the top of my TBR!
Erin BookNut recently posted…Stacking the Shelves # 22My Profile

  17. Yay books! Are you running out of space yet? Haha. So. Many. Books. I became aware of Silver in the Blood and I’m really eager for it! How is ACOTAR?? I’m really excited for Magonia. I bet the print arc is beautiful, yes? Enjoy them!!
Kristen@My Friends Are Fiction recently posted…Review of Every Word by Ellie MarneyMy Profile

    • Seriously yes D: I’m going to be harsh with what finished copies to read I keep though since I’ll be moving in May! Magonia is fairly pretty in person, though I hope the finished copy is textured or something :D. Should I do a giveaway for Magonia then? ;-)

I’m still where I was with ACOTAR I’m afraid, I was trying to make progress on Firefight but have literally have no time to read this week D:

  18. How old is that Chris Wooding book? I have not heard of it, is there something new coming down the pipe I missed?
