Spoils, Tribute, and Planning to Pillage

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently (my version of Stacking the Shelves). I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). Planning to pillage is just my version of Waiting on Wednesday where I share books that have caught my eye!

I thought this week was going to be a slow one for review books and then Harper dropped new ARCs onto Edelweiss and there was much flailing ;-).

American Craftsmen IMG_1500

American Craftsmen by Tom Doyle (Unsolicited, Tor) – This one looks so intriguing, however the main blurb on the front is from Larry Correia who I despise, so now I’m conflicted. I realize lots of silly people like good books, but I’m nervous about the messages that are likely in a book backed by a misogynistic homophobe…. Anyone read it?

The Shadow Throne by Django Wexler (Solicited, Roc) – :D That is all.

The Silk Map by Chris Willrich (Solicited, Pyr) – Oh man, there is just so much awesome!

The Vast and Brutal Sea Scan The Terror of the Southlands Beware the Wild Snow Like Ashes

The Vast and Brutal Sea (NetGalley) – I wasn’t sure I’d get this one since there was a note about only a few eARCs going out, so I’m really really pumped that I was lucky enough to be accepted!

Scan (NetGalley) – This is one of those awkward situations where I requested this one months ago and only just now got approved with about two days until pub date…. Anyone else read it?

The Terror of the Southlands (Edelweiss) – I LOVE MG PIRATES!!!!

Beware the Wild (Edelweiss) – This one sounds awesomely spooky and southern.

Snow Likes Ashes (Edelweiss) – *hyperventilates* That is all.

When I get stressed about things, I buy books on them :). I went to a conference on grad school stuff and one presenter strongly recommended The Basics of Clarity and Grace, so when I was buying writing and teaching books recommended by other speakers, I got them all :D. The bottom one is How to Write a Lot and is on academic writing, hint hint fellow grad students ;-).

So I’m going to be doing A LOT of traveling this summer and decided it was time to spring for a really nice SwissGear suitcase with the four rolling feet. This is also going to be my suitcase for BEA :D.

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. new to the wishlist)

Thursdays with the Crown

We all know that I love MG fantasy right? And look! The third Jessica Day George Glower Castle book is coming out this year!!! And it’ll be at BEA :D

I’m not usually one for anthologies but oh my good lord have you seen that author list???? It’s gonna be epic!!! Patrick Rothfuss is on it :D

What have you gotten recently? What are you looking forward to?

  3. I loved the vicious deep . I should read the others soon . Meep . I have never heard of this Larry guy . Sad to hear that’ he’s a homophobe . He surely hates me cause I’m GAY . I will not be reading his books in the future even though I have only heard of him just now

    Happy reading

    • Yey, I still need to read Vicious Deep and book two D: But I have them and just didn’t get to them last summer, I love sea books for the summer :D. Yeah, Larry is a UF/scifi writer that I definitely avoid! He got a hugo nomination this year though ugh. Haha, he wouldn’t like me either, but who cares about his opinion ;-)

  4. Great haul! I hope you enjoy your books! And my suitcase is much bigger! :O I am excited for BEA. My first tme

  5. Nice looking stack of books you have there and I love the suitcase. It will be perfect for BEA (so jealous). I hope you have a terrific week and happy reading!

    • Thanks :D I think the suitcase will be just the right size, I kept going back and forth on which size, haha.

  6. Your collection of books on teaching and writing seem so helpful! I’m TAing for the first time in the fall and I’m very excited to see if I like teaching as much as I like tutoring :)

    • Thanks :D I’m really excited to actually have a decent suitcase, haha, I’ve only had hand-me-downs previously!

  10. Anya, if it helps any regarding American Craftsmen, I don’t share Mr. Correia’s politics, and I probably couldn’t have gotten Jacqueline Carey’s blurb if the book had those sorts of messages. I hope you’ll give it a chance. Thanks! Tom

    • Thank you so much, that is actually really helpful. I’ll definitely be putting it in the schedule now :) I really appreciate you reaching out!

  11. I’ve heard great things about Django Wexler’s first book and it’s been on my radar for some time now – seeing the second volume of the series on this post reminds me I must do something about that. And soon! :-)

  12. Reading The Silk Map right now. It is damn funny for a book that is in no way a comedy. Enjoying it quite a bit.
