Spoils, Tribute, and Planning to Pillage

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently (my version of Stacking the Shelves). I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). Planning to pillage is just my version of Waiting on Wednesday where I share books that have caught my eye!

Well hello lovelies, look what I have here! I haven’t done a Spoils and Tribute for a couple of weeks since things have been slow, I’ve been trying not to buy books, and I had reviews I wanted to post on Saturday instead ;-). However, that means I know have a fair number of books to tell you about. And let me know which of them you’d like to see in a future giveaway!

Tribute

Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne The Given Strange Country by Deborah Coates

IMG_1510

Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne (Solicited, Disney) – *hyperventilates* I’m so so so excited to receive this one and have already started it :D.

The Given by Vicki Pettersson (Unsolicited, Harper) – I haven’t read the first two of this trilogy, have you? Thoughts?

Strange Country by Deborah Coates (Unsolicited, Tor) – This is another trilogy conclusion for which I haven’t read the first two, have you?

Take Back the Skies by Lucy Saxon (Solicited, Bloomsbury) – I’m going to be on the blog tour for this one and received an ARC to read as well.

The Book of Storm by Ruth Hatfield (Solicited, Macmillan) – This is a middlegrade fantasy that I have high hopes for because it has storms :D. And “nothing is black and white” my favorite ;-).

Frostborn by Lou Anders Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini

Frostborn by Lou Anders (NetGalley, Random House) – Middle grade norse fantasy?????? :D

Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini  (NetGalley, Macmillan) – I’ve been drooling over this cover for a while, so I had to request it. Witches!

Spoils

I was very lucky last week and got to go to a publisher breakfast at one of the local stores, so that is where the big stack is from. A couple of them aren’t actually sci-fi or fantasy, but I either didn’t realize that or hope to some day read anyway ;-). Here are the highlights from that stack:

The Walled City – This one was pitched for fans of Legend and sounds really exciting. I’m also thrilled to see a character that appears to be Asian on the cover and in the description!

Queen of the Tearling – I’ve had an eARC of this for a while that read the first chapter of but haven’t had time to finish. I’m a bit sad since the rep kind of spoiled part of the book when pitching it, but oh well ;-).

Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future – So apparently the main character can see everyone’s future and past back to far distant ancestors? Awesome!

The One Safe Place – This is pitched as The Giver plus Among the Hidden and I freaking loved both those books when I was a schoolkid, yey!

Then I snagged Rebel and The Immortal Crown from the extras a bloggy friend received and purchased A Creature of Moonlight because I failed to download the eARC before it expired (plus it is GORGEOUS! Do you see the shiny????).

Finally, I was lucky to snag a couple of upcoming extras from a bloggy friend. I’m not caught up with the Hybrid Chronicles, are you? I’m also really excited for another Kiersten White book, Illusions of Fate :D.

Planning to Pillage

This Shattered World

*freaks out* Really This Shattered World has been on my wishlist ever since I finished book one, but look at how pretty it issssssssss!

Gates of Thread and Stone

She has time magic! And a gorgeous cover! And a dagger in her bag :D

The Relic Guild

All you really have to say is Aelfir and I’m sold, add a pretty cover and relic magic and I have no hope ;-).

  1. The Dueling Neurosurgeons book has been getting great reviews, so hopefully you’ll enjoy it even if it’s not your usual fare :) I just read and loved These Broken Stars so This Shattered World is on my to-read list too!

    • Oo awesome! I used to read a lot of neuroscience non-fiction because I secretly want to research the human brain ;-)

  2. Queen of the Tearling is really good. I hope you enjoy it!

Take Back the Skies is on my TBR, and I’m hoping it’s good. I enjoyed the first book of the Hybrid Chronicles but never got around to reading the second one.

  6. Ooo, I love all the middle grade fantasy you have! I’d love to get back into MG (have almost exclusively been reading YA and adult books lately). Do you have any recommendations on the MG front? I feel so out of it!

Hope you enjoy all of your books! (:

  7. Kathleen says:

I’m looking forward to Midnight Thief! Gates of Thread and Stone has such pretty cover! I bet I won’t even bother reading the blurb but go straight to the cashier!

    • Haha, I do that way too often! I get this idea of what I think the book should be about based on the cover and then end up horribly wrong D:

  8. I can’t wait to read Trial by Fire. I haven’t read These Broken Stars yet, but I love the colors on the cover of This Shattered World.

  9. That’s a lot of books! I was so excited to see you liked Midnight Thief – I don’t know how I’ve managed to hold off on it for so long, but I think I’m gonna give in and read it soon! I’m looking forward to it even more after your review :)

  10. Re: Deborah Coates trilogy – I’ve read the first one “Wide Open”, and I enjoyed it very much. It’s a very different take on the subject of ghosts, and I liked the main character quite a bit.
(note to self: get the other two books as soon as possible!)

  11. Awesome book haul! Do you think your shelves will survive this plus everything you bring back from BEA? ;)

    • Fun fact: I’m going to the library within the hour to donate several bags of books, haha. The sad thing is that you can’t even really tell since I used to have two rows of books on the shelves and I wanted to fix that, so now they are just all filled with only one row….

  12. What a haul!! I just finished MT last night and really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to hear what you think. I wish I had a physical copy if Queen of Tearling. I think it would help me to connect to the story more. It also looks pretty :-) enjoy the books!

    • I definitely enjoyed it even though it was way different than I expected it to be! I’m really excited for book two since I hope she goes adventuring past the mountains :D

  13. Yep. That should take you a bit to get through.
