Spoils, Tribute, and Planning to Pillage

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently (my version of Stacking the Shelves). I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). Planning to pillage is just my version of Waiting on Wednesday where I share books that have caught my eye!

Hello everyone! This is going to be the books that I got over the last couple of weeks, not including what I got from BEA (you can find those in my BEA wrap-up post). I’m a little overwhelmed to be adding more awesome books to the BEA haul, but for several weeks, this isn’t too bad ;-).

Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini (Macmillan, solicited) – I didn’t pick this one up at BEA, so it was really exciting to get a pretty box with an ARC inside when I got home! I couldn’t resist including the box *pets*.

Rebel Nation by Shaunta Grimes (Berkley Trade, unsolicited) – I haven’t read the first book of this series, but it looks awesome. Thoughts?

The Dark Between the Stars by Kevin J. Anderson (Tor, unsolicited) – I’m slightly overwhelmed by the size of this one! Looks like it is the first in a spin-off series perhaps? Anyone read the previous books?

Robert A. Heinlein: In Dialogue with His Century Vol. 2 by William H. Patterson Jr. (Tor, unsolicited) – While I recognize the problems with a lot of Heinlein’s work, he was a huge influence on me in my budding sci-fi love. Therefore, I’m excited and will probably page through this one even though I won’t be able to read all of it!

Rain by Amanda Sun The Ultra Thin Man by Patrick Swenson Ark Storm by Linda Davies Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas Stitching Snow by R. C. Lewis

Rain by Amanda Sun (HarlequinTeen, NetGalley) – I quite enjoyed the first book despite it’s faults (illustrations!), so I’m really excited to have been approved (and then got auto-approved, woohoo!). I checked already, the illustrations are in the eARC; I’m pumped.

The Ultra Thin Man by Patrick Swenson (Tor, NetGalley) – I got an email invite to this one and Ark Storm, and since I had planned to pillage this months ago, so of course I had to download it immediately! Sci-fi mystery thriller, yey!

Ark Storm by Linda Davies (Tor, NetGalley) – Climate change sci-fi? I’m hooked!

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas (Bloomsbury, NetGalley) – I of course had requested this one on NetGalley as soon as I saw it up there and then was approved after I got back from BEA. This means that I’ll be able to giveaway my signed ARC ;-).

Stitching Snow by R. C. Lewis (Disney, NetGalley) – I’m really excited about this one, and since I got approved after picking up a physical copy, this will be perfect for another giveaway!

Gasp by Lisa McMann

Gasp by Lisa McMann came out last week and I’m pretty obsessed with this series. I have already read it and it was wonderful. Also the cover is shiny in person, soooooo preeeeeetty!

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. new to the wishlist)

Captive by Aimee Carter

Captive by Aimee Carter just got its cover and I’m swooning. I really enjoyed Pawn, so don’t mind me while I hop around a bit and obsessively refresh NetGalley >.>.

Mirror Empire

A recurring catastrophe that periodically destroys nations? This fantasy sounds so amazing, Angry Robot let me love you!

I am forever holding out for an underwater-themed book that is amazing. Atlantia sounds pretty creepy, so I have hope :D.

What have you gotten recently? What are you looking forward to?

  3. Did I read wrong or did you get to go to BEA? If so I am SO JEALOUS!!

It looks like you’re going to be very busy. Good luck with all the reading and I can’t wait to see your reviews.

Which btw can I say that I’m a new follower via bloglovin and not only do I love your blog name and layout, but the way you made Stacking the Shelves your own is awesomely creative.

Here’s my Stacking the Shelves if you’d like to check it out.

  4. Nice book haul! And creepy underwater book? I smell potential. :)

  5. Great haul! You are making me regret not asking for Trial by Fire. Heinlein was seminal in developing my love for science fiction too. I’ll have to check out that book. Come see what I got this week at Ms. Martin Teaches Media and Inside of a Dog. Happy reading!

  6. Ahhhh, Trial by Fire! Seriously can’t wait to read it, though I wasn’t a fan of the Starcrossed series since I couldn’t get into it, but so hoping it’s as good as it sounds and looks. *fingers crossed* Hope you enjoy it! :)

    • I haven’t read her previous series, so hopefully Trial by Fire is good! What didn’t appeal to you about Starcrossed?

  7. Awesome collection of books! I don’t even know where I would begin reading! Heir of Fire signed copy you say? Right on! Have a great week!

    • Haha, that’s kind of how I feel actually. I’ve put off diving into my BEA books because I just don’t know which to start with!

  8. so many books!!! haha Hope you enjoy them

  9. I can’t believe you’d give your signed arc of HoF away!! That is crazy talk. Let me know when you put it up for giveaway!! I’ll be trying my hardest to win :-D Some of those in your pile are huge! I’d be intimidated too. I’d not seen the cover for Captive! Pretty :-)

    • I’m weird about ARCs and shelves I must admit ;-). The only ARC I’ve already read and I’m holding on to is Steelheart since it is signed, but I’m kind of annoyed with it since I have a hardcover as well and now my shelf looks funny… I just don’t like how ARCs look on shelves and I know that someone else would treasure a signed HoF more than I would. I like spreading the love :D

Isn’t Captive awesome looking?? I’m so excited!

  10. I have mirror empire over here and have almost read it a couple of times, but it’s release date is so far away and I would hate to sit on a review for it.

Not read the series in question but I have read some of Keven J Anderson’s tie in novels and they are terrible, terrible things. I wouldn’t touch that book with a ten and a half foot pole.

    • I hear ya about the release date conundrum. If you’re really excited for a book though, might as well read it and enjoy it! I’ve scheduled reviews for months out before >.>

Good to know, that is actually super helpful. It’s a beast of a book too, so….. yeah ;-)
