Spoils, Tribute, and Planning to Pillage

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently (my version of Stacking the Shelves). I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). Planning to pillage is just my version of Waiting on Wednesday where I share books that have caught my eye!

I haven’t had a Spoils, Tribute and Planning to Pillage post in a few weeks because I’ve had awesome giveaways to run instead, but this week it is time to unveil the madness that occurred when I had insomnia and went on a late-night book buying spree…. Seriously, in the future I should not be able to access a credit card past a certain time of night…. I blame the Valium <.< But before I show you that madness, look at the pretties that arrived in the mail while I was traveling!

Magic Breaks (Solicited, Ace) – I read the eARC of this months ago, but Ace was wonderful enough to send me a finished copy too :D *pets*.

The Mirror Empire (Solicited, Angry Robot) – I’ve been in love with The Mirror Empire’s description ever since I read it, so I figured I might as well send off an email requesting a copy for review consideration and Caroline was so sweet to find one of the last ARCs for me! Now if only my brain was actually capable of following the intricate plot at the moment….

The Ripper Affair (Unsolicited, Orbit) – I haven’t read the first two of these, but I’m pumped to hear that the lead investigator is a woman and her sidekick is the guy ;-). I need advice, I don’t have time to read the first two, can I read The Ripper Affair without missing out on too much??

Full Fathom Five (Unsolicited, Tor) – I again haven’t read the first books, but since my book canary Pabkins loves them, I think I might have to ;-).

The Ultra Thin Man (Unsolicited, Tor) – I downloaded the eARC of this a bit ago and I’m still intrigued, so I might just have to fit this one in, heheh.

Mutation (Unsolicited, Scholastic) – Again, this is a third book and I haven’t read the first two. I’m not really sure what to think of it, anyone read this series?

Jedi Academy

Return of the Padawan (Unsolicited, Scholastic) – I also got this adorable comic book and poster from Scholastic. Since it’s not quite up my alley at the moment, I brought it to my local library since the poster is just too great not to be shown off to all those parents waiting for their kids to pick out books ;-).

Red Queen Monstrous Messenger of Fear Lailah Villain Keeper Story Thieves The Box and the Dragonfly A Wicked Thing

Red Queen (Edelweiss, Harper) – What can I say? I just can’t resist when Harper puts up more pre-approved books on Edelweiss and Red Queen looks awesome!

Monstrous (Edelweiss, Harper) – Omg omg omg! I featured Monstrous as one of my Cover Madness possibilities and I’m still in love with the cover and premise. Yey middle grade!

Messenger of Fear (Edelweiss, Harper) – I wasn’t sure about this one, so I didn’t pick it up at BEA and instead downloaded the eARC just to see if I like it and if it is too scary ;-).

Lailah (NetGalley, Macmillan) – I didn’t request a physical copy of Lailah earlier in the year, but then I saw a bunch of friends loving it, so I figured I might as well request it to see what’s got everyone talking.

Villain Keeper (Edelweiss, Harper) – DRAGONS! *ahem* The series is called The Last Dragon Charmer and is portal fantasy in the reverse where the prince comes to our world accidentally *pets adoringly*.

Story Thieves (Edelweiss, Aladdin) – I just really love middle grade fantasy about books okay? Everyone okay with that???

The Box and the Dragonfly (Edelweiss, Harper) – When this cover was revealed I was ecstatic and then confused since the info on Goodreads was a bit strange. Therefore I maybe flailing hands when I saw it on Edelweiss!

A Wicked Thing (Edelweiss, Harper) – It’s a Sleeping Beauty retelling, but it sounds like she isn’t taking any crap and therefore I’m intrigued.

With my recent decision not to stress as much over review copies, I went a bit crazy at the library and all my holds came in over the past couple of weeks. However, I’ve only managed to read a few pages in The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland and have otherwise failed to actually READ any of the library books I was so proud to have picked out…. I will though!

The Book Depository

And now starts the late night purchases of shame but also joy ;-). I haven’t yet read Poison Study but I saw Fire Study on sale at The Book Depository so I couldn’t resist. I’ve also been meaning to read Hex Hall so why not that one too! This Book Depository obsession was sparked by my finally finding out that bookmarks often come with Book Depository orders and I got my first one :D. I also bought The Kiss of Deception as soon as it came out because it is gorgeous and that is a perfectly good reason >.>.

Better World Books

Yey more impulse purchases! But this time from Better World Books where I got 11 books for $32 and free shipping! Also the profits go towards literacy programs! HOW CAN I RESIST???? So I bought a few books that were awesome prices and that I’ve wanted to read at one point our another ;-). Which should I tackle first??

Better World Books

Oh, did I not mention that Better World Books also sells hardcovers DIRT CHEAP?? Look at my gorgeous gently used new hardcovers :D.

Earlier this week I decided to walk to my local indie to see if my book buddy was working, and since I did such a good job and finally got a day with 10k steps, I treated myself to hardcovers I’d been meaning to buy ;-). Why yes, that is another copy of Magic Breaks. My parents are also fans of Kate Daniels, so I had to give them a copy :).

Finally, I started checking out t-shirt sites again and spotted this one on TeeFury and therefore had to buy it. The tiny text at the bottom says Absolutely No Dwarves ;-).

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. new to the wishlist)

Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs

OMG LOOK AT THE COVER FOR THE NEW ALPHA AND OMEGA BOOK! *breathes* Anyway, it looks pretty cool and I’m pretty excited and stuff >.>
In the time of Dragon Moon
DRAGONS! Any day that I get to type that twice in one post is a good day. Dragons, dark secrets, epic fantasy? *grabby hands*

What have you gotten recently? What are you looking forward to?

  1. Your selections from Better World Books include some books I really loved! And you’re definitely doing the right thing buying them. It’s so wonderful that some of the money goes to a good cause!

Wicked Thing sounds pretty awesome. I love retellings, especially ones that add a little grit to the original. If you haven’t read While Beauty Slept, it’s a great adult retelling of sleeping beauty which I thought was very well done. It’s a bit more historical fiction than fantasy though, so I’m not sure if it would be your thing or not.

  2. Don’t you hate it when all your library requests come in at the same time? Bluh, and it’s worse when either you don’t have time or you’re in a strange reading mood and only get through half of them. It’s a conspiracy.

We could get you one of those timed locker things that locks when you go to bed and won’t open until the morning for your credit cards. Perhaps I shouldn’t have mentioned Better World Books… ;)

    • Omg yes! I need to have just one library book at a time! I’ve already had to renew one since I haven’t gotten to it yet D:

Kind of tempting to be honest ;-). Though now my brain should be mostly normal haha

  3. Jeffrey Brown’s Star Wars books are adorable! I kind of want to buy them to add to my SW collection. And yay for Dead Heat! I can’t wait for a new Anna/Charles novel.

I want to read Red Queen and A Wicked Thing later this week, just as soon as I catch up on some other reviews that I neeeeeeeed to do asap.

    • Hehe, they look so cute! I wish that I was more into comic books, but oh well ;-)

I know that feeling so much!

  4. You take book buying seriously! What great deals! My husband LOVES Brent Weeks, so I suggest starting with that series first. :) I still need to read them too… I’m sure your TBR is just as huge as mine.

    • Omg it’s a problem, haha. This is also a months worth so that’s my excuse! Oo good to know, I definitely remember seeing lots of people spouting praise for Weeks, hence the compulsive buying ;-)

  5. All the pretties look really amazing. And late night book shopping is extremely dangerous. I’ve fallen victim to the urges many times! Enjoy all the books!

    • Haha, right?? It always feels like I have all the time and money in the world so why not and then the next morning I realize that I’m insane ;-)

  6. Wow! I am so jealous! Look at all the pretties! I can totally understand your impulse buys, I do that sometimes too. ;) I’ve had Monstrous on my want to read list for months. (Going to Edelweiss now, wish me luck!) I look forward to your review.

    • Omg so much luck for Monstrous! You should have a good chance since middle grade tends to be less competitive and Harper is pretty nice about eARCs ;-)

  7. So many books!

I adored “The Mirror Empire.” My review should be going live at the end of next week. I really hope you’ll like it; it was so damn entertaining for me!

    • Hi I’m Anya and I have a problem ;-) I’m getting really pumped for The Mirror Empire, everyone is so enjoying it! I think my brain is finally at the place where I can handle it, haha

  8. SO many books! And such great deals too. I’ve read the first 2 books in the Night Angel series by Brent Weeks. I liked them, and need to pick up the third.

  10. Haha, Harper happened to me as well. Monstrous, Red Queen & A wicked thing were also the book I snatched away from Edelweiss. The Study series from Maria Snyder is VERY good. I love Valek :D Happy reading!
