Oh crap, it’s May already?? Where did April go? Well, at least it’s over with since my finals were in April, haha. In all seriousness though, sorry about missing last week. My professors did that fun thing where they give their finals early so that they are spread out, but that assumes that some professors still give finals at the normal time…. Instead I just had all my finals early :D. But now they are done and I am celebrating by spending at least half my day reading (I can’t manage to not work because the guilt kills me, haha).

My Week

I was able to snag Shadow and Bone from the library (after being on hold for months D:) and finally understand what everyone is raving about. This book is amazing! I loved the Russian feel to it and a fantasy with an unusual setting like that is always at the top of my happy list. I was worried about a love triangle there for like a page, but then it got all better, haha. But wow, I’m super excited for the sequel, when is Siege and Storm coming out again?? >.>

I finally had a chance to finish a review book during Dewey’s Readathon! Covenant of the Faceless Knights has ben on the TBR pile for almost a year, so it was a relief to get that guilt off my shoulders, haha. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out to be quite up my alley, but if you are hankering for an easy fantasy with a heavy table-top roleplaying game flavor, you might check it out.

I had a chance to read School Spirits through NetGalley and tore through that over the last couple of days. It was so much fun and a really realistic approach to a monster fighter family. The teenage daughter of this supernatural fighting family had to start going to school to investigate a haunting there and I loved Izzy’s approach to figuring out high school: watch high school TV shows and read those teen magazines, haha! Needless to say, it wasn’t quite what she expected, but it was a lot of fun meeting nerdy friends and accidentally beating up bullies with her! (It’s not her fault she is unnaturally strong and very well trained, he shouldn’t have been bullying!) Definitely keep your eye out for this one. Review coming up next week :D.

Yes, there’s more *dies* I might have been reading more than studying some nights >.>. I got Through the Ever Night through my library’s ebook borrowing system. I also had to wait several months for this one, but it was so worth it! I was so much happier with Through the Ever Night than Under the Never Sky (liked that one too, but the romance was too central ;-) ). I seriously can’t express my excitement for the next one! Review of course coming!

Oof, so finals are coming up next week for me (well technically next week is supposed to be the last week of classes, but my professors all decided they want to get finals over with apparently….) and I’m in the denial stage >.>. I keep oscillating between procrastination mode and dreaming about the freedom of being done with my classes. I’ve very much disliked pretty much all of my classwork this term, so I’m relieved it is aaaaaaalmost done! In any case, that denial/procrastination thing  I mentioned earlier led to lots of reading. I’ve also been thinking through the mini-readathon I’m going to have as soon as everything is done (ya know, during real finals week….) and it is totally going to happen. For one thing, I have so much I want to read :D.

My Week

I of course finished The Rithmatist this week because I couldn’t stop once I got to the last 50 or so pages. The ending was so gripping! I was not planning to finish this book on the night that I did because there were too many pages left and I needed a silly thing called sleep. But I just couldn’t stop! It was so good :D. While the beginning of The Rithmatist was a little too “magical school and young protagonist trying to fit in” for me, the ending was the epicness that I expect of Sanderson ;-). And if you like magic schools, then you’re in luck!

Omg *melts in a puddle* I continued with my Sanderson mini-readathon with Steelheart. This is the second of his YA novels coming out later this year and wow can Sanderson write dystopias! Steelheart is about a future where some people get super-hero powers, but they all use them for evil. Everyone keeps hoping (until they lose hope) that a good super-hero will come along to defeat all the super-villains, but no one shows up. Instead, the world is taken over by varying Epics that fight between each other for power and kill normal people without a care. The arguably worst of these is called Steelheart. He is invincible, can turn inanimate objects to steel (like all of Chicago for instance) and shoots deadly energy beams (the most powerful Epics often have several powers). Our main character, David, has seen Steelheart bleed. Every Epic has a weakness, something that stops them from being invincible or drains their powers, but no one could ever figure out Steelheart’s. David also has a vendetta against Steelheart, and so joins a group of Epic assassins (ie assassins that kill Epics) to help them figure out and use Steelheart’s weakness to bring him down! This was another one where I wasn’t actually planning to finish it the night that I did, but I stayed up two hours past my sleeptime because I just could not stop reading :D. Get excited all! This week had a fair amount of “I don’t want to do anything because I’m sick, so I’ll read :D” which was pretty fun. But then the second part of the week was catching up from all that not doing anything, haha. I’ve been managing to get a lot of reading in anyway since it helps keep me sane when finals threaten to crush my brain ;-).

My Week

I finished The Testing pretty early in the week and am working on my review! Remember that this one doesn’t come out until June 4th, so there is still time for someone else to read it and get ready for the publication date. Hence why I’m going to be holding a giveaway for this one and another ARC that I received (Plague in the Mirror) for those of you who want some more ARCs :). Keep your eye out for that giveaway next week probably starting Tuesday.

Next, I had briefly started The Assassin’s Curse when I first got it from the library a freaking month ago. Then I got sidetracked with new releases and ARCs that were more urgent on the reading and reviewing front. However, I found time this week to read this one and it was quite fun. It also helped quench my current obsession with deserts >.>. I have to admit that I was a bit confused with the ending, since not a lot actually happened. The back of the book made it sound like they would actually pursue three impossible quests in this book. Guess I have to get the next one in June :D.

Finally, I’m soooooo excited that Krys from Bibliopunkk lent me her ARC of Brandon Sanderson’s first foray into YA! The Rithmatist is coming out in May and ya’ll better get excited :D. This one has a magical school where Rithmatists study how to draw magic chalk drawings based on circles and lines to attack and defend. They can also draw Chalklings which are any small doodle that can go off and attack your opponent’s chalk or defend your own. That’s right, you can make awesome dragons that come to life (in 2D) :D. While it’s taking some adjusting to the YA setting and main character (which I’m just not used to with Sanderson since he hasn’t done this before), I’m loving the Rithmatic diagrams at the beginning of every chapter and drawings WITHIN the chapters. There are adorable doodles along the pages showing what Chalklings people are drawing and they act things out, it’s awesome!!!

Whew, I just got back from Boston literally a half hour ago (with a cold D:) and I’m wiped out! I was at an academic conference and those things are freaking jam-packed (the jam was tasty though, hehe). I was able to get a bunch of reading done on the plane rides and lay-overs though :D. It always makes me happy when I’m able to read an entire book on a trip since it’s such a satisfying use of travel time.

My Week

I finished Poison earlier in the week and found it quite fun! While I wish that the magic and fantasy feel had been taken a bit more seriously, I can’t deny that I laughed out loud a couple of times. I’m going to try to get my review out this week, since this one was released not too long ago, so you won’t have to wait for more details on what exactly I did and didn’t like ;-).

I finished The Great Hunt this week for the read along, and the ending was spectacular. I had been having a little bit of trouble getting into the book for the last month, but that last section gave me goosebumps multiple times :D. It was so much more satisfying than the ending of the first book and really convinced me that I could grow to love this series as much as so many people have (well, maybe not the fanatic level of all of them ;-) ). I’ve already got my copy of The Dragon Reborn, so I’m all set for the next read along to start!

I’ve been very excited to read Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs ever since it came out a couple of months ago, and was freaking thrilled that I had so much time in airports to finally get it read. That’s right, I read the whole book on two flights, one layover and a little bit in the hotel room because I just couldn’t put it down ;-). This is another one that I’m going to try to get the review out soon since it’s a new release. Also, I’m so freaking excited for the next one (Night Broken!) since Frost Burned hinted at some pretty epic things brewing :D.

So I was super lucky to get an ARC of the testing from a friend and have been plowing through it! It’s been compared to Hunger Games, and it is a fair comparison in some respects (teens competing due to the plotting of dystopian government), however there is a lot less outright kids killing kids and no love triangle that I’ve found so far. Past that, the writing is compelling and the characters are strong, so I’m thinking The Testing is going to be a big hit. It’s set to be published on June 4th, so my review will have to wait a bit yet.

Finally, I’ve been getting father in Zenn Scarlett this week since it was next up on the Kindle books TBR. This one is being published May 7th, and it is so much fun! There are so many awesome alien critters and friends, and a lot of plot potential. Zenn is still just helping out with the space animals where I am currently, but there are hints at all sorts of other problems that she might end up dealing with. My current questions: What is going on with Zenn’s head? What really happened to her mother? What is her father up to? What is going to happen to the clinic??

Apparently I’m jut not good at Saturday mornings anymore ;-). I’m coming up on the last month of my semester and several of my classes have decided that this is when final projects and exams should be due, not in a month like normal people >.>. I might be a little bitter ;-). In any case, things are a bit busy and I’m relying on happy books to make me feel better, hehe.

My Week

I finished The Summer Prince this week and while the ending was much more exciting than the rest of the book, I still was disappointed that it took so long to get engaging. If the rest of the book had been as action-packed, I would have been a lot happier. My review will be coming shortly because I need to type it up before Netgalley archives it. I’m sad it took me nearly a month to read one book D: .

My new audiobook is Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare and I’m looooooving it! Thanks to Simon and Schuster Audio for sending me audiobooks of the first two. I’m a little nervous since apparently the narrator changes in the second book, since I love her so much right now! She narrates with an American accent but does the British accents wonderfully (in my un-knowledgeable about accents opinion). In any case, the story is also most excellent and I wish that I was reading the physical copy sometimes so I could keep reading after I stopped driving, haha!

Finally, I’ve been meaning to read some books on my shelf for a while, so Poison is up since it’s so nice and short ;-). I was a little surprised at the lighter writing, but now that I know what to expect from this book, I’m happy with the fun atmosphere and lighter fantasy style.

Sorry that I’m late this week! I had a migraine last night and couldn’t bring myself to write a post :(. I figured you all would understand, hehe. Also make sure to check out the discussions section this week, since there has been a lot of awesome blog posts this week!

My Week

I am aaaaaalmost done with my audiobook of Divergent, so exciting! I would have been finished if I hadn’t gotten sleepy when driving and needed to switch to some hardrock, haha. I am a big fan of the romance element in this one, it’s so sweet ;-). However, overall Divergent has been a little too sad . I can handle one or two big sad events at epic endings, but there were so many sad things all throughout the book D: . My bleeding heart can’t handle it! Is the next one just as sad??

I got The Summer Prince from Netgalley, and isn’t it preeeeeetty?? I’m about fifty percent through and it’s been slow going unfortunately. There are so many words that I’m pretty sure are Portugese that I don’t know :(. I’m sure that it was meant to add to the futuristic Brazil setting, but it makes it difficult to get into the world if you can’t actually picture what is going…. I’m hoping that the ending gets more exciting and engaging, but so far I’m not actually sure what the plot is unfortunately.

This week it was back to classes (boo!), but I still managed to find plenty of time to read :D. I’ve also been good and spending more time connecting with all you awesome bloggers on Twitter, which is generally challenging for me. I’m a bit Twitter illiterate and intimidated to be honest ;-).

My Week

I finished Above World this week! If you recall, I was super excited to read this one because I was craving mermaids and ocean-themes without the angst and drama that seems to be present in most of the YA mermaid books currently out. Above World was a pretty awesome mix of fantasy creatures with sci-fi reasoning behind them. I have to admit that I’m not sure what age group to classify this one as though, since there were some creepy scenes towards the end that might not be good for a younger audience to read. In any case, it’s perfect for adults who are craving juvenile fiction with an awesome premise!

Scarlet was next on my list, since I borrowed it from the library and so very much need to read it before the due date. I doubt I’ll be able to renew it since it should be a popular choice ;-). My review of Cinder is coming out on Monday, since I wanted to get my thoughts down on that before starting the sequel ;-). So far I’m wondering how the Red Riding Hood theme is going to tie in; I can’t decide whether I like Wolf or not! ;-)

Finally, I’m reading The Elephant of Surprise for review. This is the fourth book in the Russel Middlebrook series (Geography Club is the first) and it is supposed to be a stand alone. I read Geography Club to get an intro to the characters and their lives, and have now skipped ahead to The Elephant of Surprise since it is coming out (haha) at the end of the month. So far I’ve been a little disoriented about what has happened in everyone’s lives, but there is enough explanation that I can catch up ;-).

Where did my spring break go? I swear it was here one week and gone the next…. oh wait, that’s how it normally work isn’t it? Darn it! Breaks always go too fast don’t they? ;-) Oh well, I got a couple of books finished this week and am excited to start on more fun books from the library!

My Week

I literally just finished Mockingjay on Friday and there are so many feelings! At first I was all mad at the way the conclusion was going (end of rebellion, scenes in the capital, you know what I mean!) and then there was more and I was getting more angry at the things that were being discussed and suggested by certain rebel leaders *ahem* and then it got better and more satisfying. It was a bit of a strange ride I have to admit! Everything was so awesome until they went to the Capital…. Then things just got a bit… weird. I think I might have a normal review without spoilers and then an in-depth discussion of the ending since many of you have read it I’m sure. I just need to think through all these feelings, gah! Haha.

I had a lovely bout of insomnia this week, during which I finished Grave Mercy :D. While it got a bit slow in the middle, the ending of this one is simply delicious and awesome and mystical (more feelings!). This is my reassurance to anyone thinking about reading Grave Mercy: don’t worry if the action slows down in the middle, the ending is totally worth it!

I had to make sure I had another audiobook ready to go in case I finished Mockingjay while still on my long drive this week, so I got Divergent from the library’s Overdrive as a backup. This is one that I’ve been meaning to read for FOREVER and I even own a physical copy, but it just kept getting pushed aside for other books that had to be read immediately. Fortunately, I’m always short on audiobooks, so now I will most certainly finish Divergent!

Finally, it was time for another physical book and I had gotten Above World unexpectedly from the library this week (I was like third on the waitlist, guess the other people were busy). I have been craving a good (not overly romance-y) mermaid book, and Above World is peeeeerfect! Seriously all, I can not recommend this one enough to anyone in the mood for awesome mermaid-type people without a heavy romance/stalker element, haha. It is apparently MG, but it seems more like YA with young protagonists to me *shrugs*. The concepts are definitely not too juvenile in my opinion and I’m not a bit MG reader :). But seriously, love this book, so freaking thrilled to have found it!

Yey, it’s Saturday, and best of all, it’s Spring Break :D. While for a graduate student, that just means more time to work on research, I think I’m going to take some time this weekend to get more reading done as well ;-). Somehow I found time last weekend to finish both of my books on Sunday, which was pretty exciting! I then couldn’t help but started looking at my library’s Overdrive and put some holds in while checking out Mockingjay and Grave Mercy and some of those holds came active sooner than expected, oops!

My Week

I finished Catching Fire this week and you all were right, it was awesome! I also made sure to get a copy of Mockingjay before I finished Catching Fire so I wouldn’t go crazy waiting ;-). Thanks for the advice!! I have a lot of reviews lined up, so it might be a bit before this one comes up, but you can be assured that it will be 5 stars :D. Wow, just wow, so powerful.

In my mad dash last weekend, I finished the last third of Cinder all at once. I couldn’t help it :D. While there were parts of Cinder that didn’t grab me as much as I hoped, I still really enjoyed this very fresh story. Between cyborgs, the cinderella retelling, Moon people with magic power, and Asian cultural influences, this was a whole ball of awesome. Another review that will be in the mix at some point in the next couple of weeks, but I’m not sure exactly when ;-).

The other book I finished in my mini-marathon is Liesel K. Hill’s Persistence of Vision. This was a great dystopia sci-fi with an awesome time travel spin. My stop on the blog tour is next week, so look for the review :D.

So it was time for a new audiobook and I was lucky enough to find Mockingjay on my library’s Overdrive! This was my first exploration into using Overdrive and it was a little hard to figure out how to transfer it to my iPhone. However, I figured it out, and it’s so nice not to have to transfer discs! I’m loving the direction Mockingjay has taken; it’s awesome to see Katniss finally able to fight back ;-).

Finally, it was time to start another book, and I spotted Grave Mercy in the library’s Overdrive. I remember seeing a lot of people recommending this one, so I decided to check it out :D. While it’s a little outside of my normal books, it has enough of a mysticism element that it still feels very much like fantasy ;-).

Hey all! This week was my birthday :D. Yesterday was actually, and there was pizza and cheesecake and TV watching with friends and boyfriend. While the universe tried to beat me with a foot of snow and car trouble, presents of books, books and more books beat it back! Also, there is an orchid show today and I love plants almost as much as I love books :D. Yes I’m a hippie disguised as a computer nerd >.>.

My Week

I haven’t been driving as much this week since the boyfriend came to me (yey!), but I’m on the last disc of Catching Fire :D. I don’t really know what I’m going to listen to next, but you all are right that I need to find a copy of Mockingjay stat, crap!

 

I’m also still reading Cinder, and decided on my birthday to spend a couple “me” hours reading, since it’s my birthday darn it! This week has been crazy busy school-wise, so I haven’t had a lot of time to read this one, but I’m about 2/3 through. Maybe I’m just not into cyborgs at the moment, but it’s not as must-read as I had expected. Definitely good, but I’m not all “omg I must find time to read Cinder!” It could just be the weird reading slump due to stress thing too ;-).

This week starts our read along of The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan, so I read the first 6 chapters this week :). I’m enjoying the beginning, though it started a bit slow with the recap and the prologue. We’ve jumped into the action now though :D.
