The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson

A heretic thief is the empire’s only hope in this fascinating tale that inhabits the same world as the popular novel, Elantris.

Shai is a Forger, a foreigner who can flawlessly copy and re-create any item by rewriting its history with skillful magic. Condemned to death after trying to steal the emperor’s scepter, she is given one opportunity to save herself. Though her skill as a Forger is considered an abomination by her captors, Shai will attempt to create a new soul for the emperor, who is almost dead.

Probing deeply into his life, she discovers Emperor Ashravan’s truest nature—and the opportunity to exploit it. Her only possible ally is one who is truly loyal to the emperor, but councilor Gaotona must overcome his prejudices to understand that Shai’s forgery is as much artistry as it is deception.

Brimming with magic and political intrigue, this deftly woven fantasy delves into the essence of a living spirit. — Goodreads.com

So I just got The Emperor’s Soul in the mail this week, and it was one of those books that I had to buy a copy just to own the pretty and have it on my shelf :D. I love the tapestry style of the design, and combined with the summary, I’m just so freaking excited to read this book, I just can’t contain it squeeeeee! Have you read The Emperor’s Soul yet? I know I’ve been seeing it on a lot of people’s lists recently, so I would love to hear what you think!

Wow, those colors are gorgeous! Firelight is one of those covers that you get more out of the longer you look at it…. Oh sorry, got distracted there for a moment. I love the clock tower and lamp in the background, showing the historical feeling once you get past the “Oo pretty flames!” thing. Firelight is a book I would buy just to have the cover on my shelf…. Anyone read it??

This week’s Cover Lover is from the wonderful blog of author Jim C. Hines. I not only love all the books I’ve read by Hines, he also is just a freaking awesome person. He is hardcore into women’s rights and safety, and if you click on that previous link, you’ll see his explanation for why the model on this cover is a little heavier, but he still wishes she was heavier still to properly portray the character and show that you don’t have to be stick straight to be beautiful (and a dryad?? :D).

There isn’t a description on Goodreads yet, but this is the sequel to Libriomancer, and wow do I want to read this book even more now! Codex Reborn looks like one of those books that I’m going to buy the hardcover of just to have the pretty thing on my shelf :D. I love this cover partially for Jim’s campaign against overly thin models and unnatural poses, but also because it’s so freaking beautiful! Lena looks like a woman that I would be instant friends with, and that forest is somewhere I’d be happy being lost in forever. This is one of those covers that just sucks you in because you already feel connected to the character portrayed and the expansive world! Has anyone read Libriomancer yet and want to tell me how awesome it is??

This week’s Cover Lover is a book that I’ve received for review and struck me as soon as I saw the cover! Here is Veil by Aaron Overfield:

I just completely love the tattooed veil and the intensity of the model’s stare! I’m very excited to review this book and have it on my shelf :D. Here is the Goodreads description:

Dr. Jin Tsay’s revelation entices the military with a potential to uncover and disarm any covert threats. The government that funded the engineer’s classified project orders Tsay’s death, so they can solely and secretly possess his alluring technological consummation: VEIL

Veil proves to be the purest, deepest form of espionage and anti-terrorism by endowing humankind with the ability to experience life through another person. Dr. Tsay’s technology offers submersion into another’s mind; Veil provides a direct perception of their immediate thoughts, emotions, memories, and the rush of their most intimate senses. If it ever escapes the military’s relentlessly selfish grip, Veil swears to permanently alter the psychosocial, sexual, political, economic, and religious landscapes of our lives. Veil promises to usher in our ultimately unifying evolution: the New Veil World.

Retribution for Dr. Jin Tsay’s assassination comes in the form of his widow, who races to deliver Veil unto the world and share it freely, before those who ordered her husband’s murder can exploit it. Wielding the inescapable force of Veil, Suren Tsay seeks to inflict justice upon all those responsible for her husband’s demise, culminating in an unforgiving, brutal, obsessive hunt for the elusive killer of the father of the New Veil World: the Great Jin Tsay.

Taking Veil beyond limits Jin himself could’ve imagined, the revered Widow Tsay vows to get her revenge at any cost. Suren Tsay soon realizes she too must inhabit the world created by her husband’s invention and her own bloodlust.

Suren must learn to live in the New Veil World.
She must also fight to liberate it.

Yey a sci-fi book with a beautiful cover! It can happen, haha! Have you heard of or read Veil yet?

This week’s cover of awesomeness is Tiger’s Destiny by Colleen Houck:

This is the fourth book of the Tiger Saga

From Goodreads:

With three of the goddess Durga’s quests behind them, only one prophecy now stands in the way of Kelsey, Ren, and Kishan breaking the tiger’s curse. But the trio’s greatest challenge awaits them: A life-endangering pursuit in search of Durga’s final gift, the Rope of Fire, on the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal.  It’s a race against time–and the evil sorcerer Lokesh–in this eagerly anticipated fourth volume in the bestsellingTiger’s Curse series, which pits good against evil, tests the bonds of love and loyalty, and finally reveals the tigers’ true destinies once and for all.

This cover is so gorgeous! Greens and yellows can be tricky to combine sometimes, but this cover does so amazingly. Has anyone read the rest of this series? I haven’t actually even heard of it before I saw the cover, but it has a really good rating on Goodreads!

So when I saw that Hannah over at Once Upon A Time (click image) had started a feature for random covers that catch her eye, I super wanted to join, and not just because the rainbow heart is “naff” ;-). I’ve been toying with some cover feature for a while because I do have a big love for covers, so this was perfect :D.

This week is Ironskin by Tina Connolly. I’m a huge fan of the mask and the misty cloak/fog. It just looks so gorgeous and, when combined with the name of the book, makes me really interested in what it is about!

From Goodreads:

Jane Eliot wears an iron mask.

It’s the only way to contain the fey curse that scars her cheek. The Great War is five years gone, but its scattered victims remain—the ironskin.

When a carefully worded listing appears for a governess to assist with a “delicate situation”—a child born during the Great War—Jane is certain the child is fey-cursed, and that she can help.

Teaching the unruly Dorie to suppress her curse is hard enough; she certainly didn’t expect to fall for the girl’s father, the enigmatic artist Edward Rochart. But her blossoming crush is stifled by her own scars, and by his parade of women. Ugly women, who enter his closed studio…and come out as beautiful as the fey.

Jane knows Rochart cannot love her, just as she knows that she must wear iron for the rest of her life. But what if neither of these things is true? Step by step Jane unlocks the secrets of her new life—and discovers just how far she will go to become whole again.

It looks really interesting too!
