The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

Welcome to Weep.

All right, so I have a problem. During November of last year I took a break from blogging to win NanoWrimo. But of course I was still reading! I’ve been debating what to do with the notes that I took after finishing each book. I had a plan to write out a full review of them based on the notes, but three months later and I have to admit that that is just not likely to happen. I still want to talk about the books with you though! So here is a barebones, just-my-notes chat about Crooked Kingdom!

NIL Unlocked by Lynne Matson ARC {4 Stars}

NIL Unlocked by Lynne Matson is the sequel to NIL, but features a different couple and is quite easy to jump into with having read the previous book. You don’t even really need to worry about spoilers below since the two books are nearly companion novels. If, like me, you weren’t 100% on board with the romantic focus and lack of island-reveals of the first book, you should definitely consider giving NIL Unlocked a try because it was everything that I wanted the first book to be (ie YA Lost!).

Note: I received an advanced copy of NIL Unlocked from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

New arrivals cause rifts within the City, putting the Search system at risk, and calling everything Rives knows into question. Desperate for answers, he teams up with the only other person searching for them: Skye, a new arrival with a mysterious past of her own. Soon the duo find themselves locked in a desperate race to save all the residents of Nil—and possibly destroy the island forever. But at what cost? And who will pay the price?

Stone in the Sky by Cecil Castellucci ARC {4 Stars}

Stone in the Sky by Cecil Castellucci is the sequel to Tin Star, but where Tin Star was lonely and introspective, Stone in the Sky is action-packed and addictive. I am so glad that I took the advice of other reviewers (Christina!) and dove into Stone in the Sky because once I was past the chapter of info-dumps, I couldn’t put Stone in the Sky down. I stayed up until 3am reading when I had meant to read just a few chapters and then I finished the next night :D. If you are a fan of space adventures and hard sci-fi with romance, just jump right into Stone in the Sky, no real need to read the first book!

Note: I received an advanced copy of Stone in the Sky from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

Death Marked by Leah Cypess eARC {4 Stars}

Death Marked by Leah Cypess is the conclusion to the duology started with Death Sworn and it really changes the game for what this story is about. There is a whole lot more magic, not much romance, but another awesome and unexpected ending that I loved :D. If you weren’t completely sold on Death Sworn because of not enough magic, definitely give Death Marked a try! And of course be warned that there will be spoilers below so feel free to check out my review of Death Sworn instead to be safe ;-).

Note: I received an advanced copy of Death Sworn from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

A young sorceress’s entire life has been shaped to destroy the empire controlling her world. But if everything she knows is a lie, will she even want to fulfill her destiny? The sequel to Death Sworn is just as full of magic and surprising revelations, and will thrill fans of Leigh Bardugo and Robin LaFevers.

At seventeen, Ileni lost her magical power and was exiled to the hidden caves of the assassins. She never thought she would survive long. But she discovered she was always meant to end up, powerless, in the caves as part of an elder sorcerer’s plan to destroy the evil Empire they'd battled so long. Except that Ileni is not an assassin, and she doesn't want to be a weapon. And, after everything, she’s not even sure she knows the truth. Now, at the very heart of the Empire—its academy for sorcerers—the truth is what she seeks. What she finds challenges every belief she holds dear—and it threatens her fledgling romance with the young master of assassins.

Prototype by M.D. Waters eARC {4 Stars}

Prototype by M.D. Waters is the sequel to Archetype and continues the wonderful mixture of romance and sci-fi that I loved in the first book! There will be definitely spoilers below if you haven’t read Archetype, so be sure to check out my review of that one first ;-). If you’re still reading I assume that you already know how painful the cliffhanger in the epilogue of Archetype was, so you’ll understand how excited I was to find out what happened next :D. Prototype does a great job of standing on its own while continuing and wrapping up the story started in Archetype. Prototype is a bit of a different book since there is less of a mystery for Emma and we get to see much more action and more of the world, but there are still lots of awesome plot twists that I of course love!

Note: I received an advanced copy of Prototype from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

But the past rises to haunt her and to make sure there’s nowhere on the planet she can hide. Declan Burke wants his wife back, and with a little manipulation and a lot of reward money, he’s got the entire world on his side. Except for the one man she dreads confronting the most: Noah Tucker.

Emma returns to face what she’s done but finds that the past isn’t the problem. It’s the present—and the future it represents. Noah has moved on and another woman is raising their daughter.

Death Sworn by Leah Cypess eARC {4 Stars}

Death Sworn by Leah Cypess combines a fun fantasy world with twists on traditional fantasy tropes and some surprisingly deep morality questions. It introduces a world that I can’t wait to find out more about, even though nearly the entire book takes place in the cave system of a guild of assassins! Also, plot twists, ahoy, woot!

Note: I received an eARC of Death Sworn through Edelweiss for an honest review. Some things may have changed in the final version.

Perfect Lies by Kiersten White eARC {4 Stars}

Perfect Lies is the sequel to Mind Games and continues right where Mind Games left off with more intrigue, awesome mind powers, and an amazing sisterly dynamic. I quite enjoyed Mind Games, though this series is clearly not for everyone. If you enjoy stream-of-consciousness narration, crazy timelines interweaving, and broken characters, you should definitely check out this series, but go read Mind Games since there will be spoilers below ;-). If you have already read Mind Games, you will probably enjoy Perfect Lies just about the same amount that you did Mind Games, it all depends on your preferences, haha.

Note: I received Perfect Lies through Edelweiss for an honest review. Some things may have changed in the final version.
