lona Andrews—#1 New York Times bestselling author of Magic Shifts—once again pulls readers into the dark and dangerous world of the Kate Daniels novels...

Shapeshifting tigress Dali Harimau may be a powerful healer and magic user, but she’s far from what might be called “normal”. She dislikes the violence and bloodshed that are a way of life for most of her kind, even going so far as to become a vegetarian. The last thing she wants is trouble...

Jim Shrapshire is an original, hardcore badass. A jaguar shifter, he’s been tasked with keeping Atlanta’s Cat Clan in line, which he does with swift and lethal force when necessary. His only soft spot is for the petite Dali, whose kindness he calls upon when he is injured.

When Dali is approached by a desperate woman whose grandmother has vanished, Jim is concerned enough to help investigate. But what they find may just be the end of them—an enemy whose skill in the dark arts is matched only by their willingness to kill anyone in their way...

Magic Steals was originally published in the anthology Night Shift.

Thanks to his relationship with the ancient Druid Atticus O’Sullivan, Oberon the Irish wolfhound knows trouble when he smells it—and furthermore, he knows he can handle it.

When he discovers that a prizewinning poodle has been abducted in Eugene, Oregon, he learns that it’s part of a rash of hound abductions all over the Pacific Northwest. Since the police aren’t too worried about dogs they assume have run away, Oberon knows it’s up to him to track down those hounds and reunite them with their humans. For justice! And gravy!

Engaging the services of his faithful Druid, Oberon must travel throughout Oregon and Washington to question a man with a huge salami, thwart the plans of diabolical squirrels, and avoid, at all costs, a fight with a great big bear.

But if he’s going to solve the case of the Purloined Poodle, Oberon will have to recruit the help of a Boston terrier named Starbuck, survive the vegetables in a hipster pot pie, and firmly refuse to be distracted by fire hydrants and rabbits hiding in the rose bushes.

At the end of the day, will it be a sad bowl of dry kibble for the world’s finest hound detective, or will everything be coming up sirloins?

The Purloined Poodle is another exciting novella entry in Kevin Hearne’s New York Times best-selling Iron Druid series.

This is going to be a very different review than I normally post because I want to get down my thoughts, but they are scattered and completely due to where my brain is at currently. This is very much a time when my rating is a reflection on my experience only and not any attempt at an objective evaluation of these stories. Basically, I can’t evaluate these stories in a way that I consider fair because they just aren’t working for my reading mood right now.

The Hope of Elantris: Elantris is my hands-down favorite Sanderson book so I was unbelievably pumped to see more of that city. It’s been about three years since I read it, however, so I was grateful for the reminders snuck in here and there. I thought this story was a nice addition to the novel, but not a necessity to read. It did make me want to reread Elantris though!

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire Audiobook {5 Stars}

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is an audiobook and novella not to miss. I was originally worried about the ‘horror’ label that got stuck on it, but it’s really just dark fantasy with a bit of gore. More importantly, the worlds described and characters trying to get back to them will sink into your heart and make you exceedingly relieved that this is a series!

Note: I received an advanced copy of Every Heart a Doorway from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
No Solicitations
No Visitors
No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

No matter the cost.

Perfect State by Brandon Sanderson Audiobook {3 Stars}

Perfect State by Brandon Sanderson is a novella I’ve been meaning to read for a while. I have great faith in Sanderson for always writing something interesting and inventive, so I had no idea what Perfect State was actually about before jumping in headfirst. I have to say that what I got was not at all what I was expecting and while it is definitely inventive, I feel like Perfect State tries to pack in a bit too much for a novella.

Moving Forward by Jamie Lackey {4.5 Stars}

Moving Forward by Jamie Lackey is a novella about what happens after the zombie plague has been controlled and life needs to start moving on. I love the unique premise and I also love a main character who is a middle-aged veteran of the zombie war, black, and bisexual. Corinne is brave and kind and really tired of dealing with zombies. I’m not normally a fan of zombie stories, so believe it when I say this is a novella not to miss if you are even slightly intrigued ;-).

She wakes up in one of the infected sanctuaries, where she'll have to build her life over again, knowing that at any moment she, or anyone around her, could become a monster.

The Jewel and Her Lapidary by Fran Wilde eARC {3 Stars}

The Jewel and Her Lapidary by Fran Wilde is an ambitious novella packing the world of an epic fantasy into just a hundred pages. I loved the magic based on living jewels and the rigor that magic users must go through to keep their minds from being influenced by those same jewels. However, this just wasn’t enough pages for me to really feel that I got a complete story given everything that was packed in.

Note: I received an advanced copy of The Jewel and Her Lapidary from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

An epic fantasy, in miniature.

The Devil You Know by KJ Parker eARC {4.5 Stars}

The Devil You Know by K. J. Parker is a novella telling the story of a demon working for a rather bureaucratic version of Hell and his favorite philosopher who just sold his soul for suspicious reasons. I absolutely love the spin on selling your soul to the devil and grew strangely attached to both of these characters!

The greatest philosopher of all time is offering to sell his soul to the Devil. All he wants is twenty more years to complete his life’s work. After that, he really doesn’t care.

But the assistant demon assigned to the case has his suspicions, because the philosopher is Saloninus–the greatest philosopher, yes, but also the greatest liar, trickster and cheat the world has yet known; the sort of man even the Father of Lies can’t trust.

He’s almost certainly up to something; but what?

Winter by Dan Grace eARC {3 Stars}

Winter by Dan Grace is a novella about a group of people trying to survive in the north after a war has broken out in the UK. However, one of their companions seems to have powers beyond that of an ordinary person, and everyone’s survival depends on the decisions they are about to make. Winter is told in alternating time periods during the escape from populated areas and a while after they’ve been living off the land in the winter. It’s an interesting premise, but I found myself too frustrated by the lack of answers in the end.

Note: I received an advanced copy of Winter from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

In the aftermath of an anarchic uprising, a group of revolutionaries flee London for the north, coming to terms with the violent loss of their companions, battling with illness and a new way of life.

In the forests of the Scottish borders, they meet Mikhail, a Ukrainian immigrant in touch with powers they can scarcely believe. But is he all he seems? Because the snows are coming, the seasons turn, and the laws of the cities mean little to the woods.

In Dan Grace’s debut novella a violent future of the failed Union meets the mythic and pagan past. As man reaps the harvest of war, utopian hopes vie with apocalyptic fears. Winter sets in.
