Govcorp detective Carlos Moreno was only a baby when Atlas left Earth to seek truth among the stars. But in that moment, the course of Carlos’s entire life changed. Atlas is what took his mother away; what made his father lose hope; what led Alejandro Casales, leader of the religious cult known as the Circle, to his door. And now, on the eve of the fortieth anniversary of Atlas’s departure, it’s got something to do why Casales was found dead in his hotel room—and why Carlos is the man in charge of the investigation.

To figure out who killed one of the most powerful men on Earth, Carlos is supposed to put aside his personal history. But the deeper he delves into the case, the more he realizes that escaping the past is not so easy. There’s more to Casales’s death than meets the eye, and something much more sinister to the legacy of Atlas than anyone realizes...

Planetfall by Emma Newman {4.5 Stars}

Planetfall by Emma Newman is a sci-fi adventure that took me completely by surprise. I was fascinated by the realistic portrayal of planet colonization via 3D printing, but found so much more to the story than I expected. If you’re looking for compelling characters and mysteries with fast-pacing and a great hypothesis of how we could settle other planets, don’t miss Planetfall.

Note: I received an advanced copy of Planetfall from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

Renata Ghali believed in Lee Suh-Mi’s vision of a world far beyond Earth, calling to humanity. A planet promising to reveal the truth about our place in the cosmos, untainted by overpopulation, pollution, and war. Ren believed in that vision enough to give up everything to follow Suh-Mi into the unknown.

More than twenty-two years have passed since Ren and the rest of the faithful braved the starry abyss and established a colony at the base of an enigmatic alien structure where Suh-Mi has since resided, alone. All that time, Ren has worked hard as the colony's 3-D printer engineer, creating the tools necessary for human survival in an alien environment, and harboring a devastating secret.

Ren continues to perpetuate the lie forming the foundation of the colony for the good of her fellow colonists, despite the personal cost. Then a stranger appears, far too young to have been part of the first planetfall, a man who bears a remarkable resemblance to Suh-Mi.

The truth Ren has concealed since planetfall can no longer be hidden. And its revelation might tear the colony apart…

Updates from the Lair 11/15/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Loves! Sorry I’m late posting this, I was too tired when I got home from friends’ last night (and kicked butt at Monopoly!) and I knew you all would forgive me :). It’s been a normal week, though we did lose power for a few hours on Friday from crazy storms and I got my car’s bumper fixed finally, so it’s all better. The husband is learning physics, so I’ve started dreaming about solving physics problems… yey.

My Week

The Long Way to a Small, Angry PlanetYou probably all noticed my read along for The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet! I’m really loving this book so far and am really happy we’re doing this read along since I probably wouldn’t have found it otherwise. It’s a great sci-fi for those who liked Firefly for the characters and light-hearted fun ;-).

Tower of ThornsI’m listened to Tower of Thorns on audiobook currently and loving it! I resisted reading an ARC since I knew how great the audio for Dreamer’s Pool was and I’m glad I waited. Blackthorn and Grim are my favorites.

PlanetfallI read Planetfall pretty much in a day yesterday (hence why I didn’t have time to prep this post….) and wow what a great sci-fi! It’s addictive and blends a lot of really compelling plot lines. I need to figure out how to review it now, but seriously, go grab a copy.

Sorcerer to the CrownI’m buddy reading Sorcerer to the Crown with CJ of Sarcasm Lemons and really enjoying it. It helps that she is sending me emails with hot men in them to imagine as the main character ;-). The language is a bit dense, and there is some pretty heavy racism that the MC has to deal with, but the magic is awesome and there is a lot of great humor, so I’m thinking I’m going to love it!

Bands of MourningFinally, I’ve started Bands of Mourning :D. It was one of those situations where a bunch of books I tried just weren’t cutting it and I realized that I was comparing them all to Sanderson, so I might as well just read Bands of Mourning instead of disliking all other books for not being this one, ha. It’s awesome so far, obviously!

Planetfall by Emma Newman

I haven’t had a chance to finish Planetfall yet, but I could tell from the first page that I would love it and that I had to share with you all ;-). I just can’t resist a mystery in space!
