Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder Audiobook {4.5 Stars}

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder is just as delightful a read as everyone promised it would be! I listened to Poison Study on audiobook and highly recommend it if you have been wanting to try an audio fantasy. I found myself making excuses to listen to more, including doing more cleaning :D. Yelena’s predicament and resulting adventure were refreshingly unique for this long time fantasy reader and I’m excited to see more of this magic in subsequent books!

Note: I listened to an audio version of Poison Study. This very much influences my reading experience.

Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison...

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can't control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren't so clear...

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Yey for a normal week! I did some work, some homework, some reading, and some blogging! I’ve also been working on the blog for my lab but having trouble finding a theme that has all the features we want (header image space, featured image next to snippets of posts but don’t show up on the post’s page, right sidebar, anyone??) and am pretty sick of looking through themes O.O. The boy drove back to Minnesota on his own this time since I just couldn’t take the time off to drive there and back, so I’m kind of missing him :(. But I have books and friends to keep me company :D.

My Week

The Heart of BetrayalI’m ALMOST done with Heart of Betrayal and I’m pretty meh about it to be honest. There are hints of Lia having cool powers, but that is clearly not the focus of the plot for this book and I’m disappointed. There is also a lot of references to people and things from book one that I don’t remember at all, ouch!

Poison StudyI started the audio of Poison Study and it is so delightful! Valek’s narration is making me fall hard for him and I think I’m going to really like listening to this series finally :D. I kind of wish the poisons were real ones though so that I could learn about them, haha!

The Grace of KingsI’ve read a whole page of The Grace of Kings but the dedication and pronunciation guide have me already pretty excited that this will be a fantasy that uses aspects of East Asian culture well instead of slipshop. It will probably take me a week or two to get through it since it’s huge, but I’m excited! And look out for a giveaway tomorrow for your own copy :D.
