Just Hatched Book Feature

Just Hatched is a feature where I share my first impressions of a book after the first chapter. Check out the announcement post for more information.

An Accident of Stars by Foz Meadows intrigued me immediately since I’ve read Foz’s blog off and on for years. Also that cover is so pretty! I’m definitely intrigued by this book, though I’m not sure that it’s really going to be a perfect fit for me.

Note: I received an advanced copy of An Accident of Stars from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

When Saffron Coulter stumbles through a hole in reality, she finds herself trapped in Kena, a magical realm on the brink of civil war.

There, her fate becomes intertwined with that of three very different women: Zech, the fast-thinking acolyte of a cunning, powerful exile; Viya, the spoiled, runaway consort of the empire-building ruler, Vex Leoden; and Gwen, an Earth-born worldwalker whose greatest regret is putting Leoden on the throne. But Leoden has allies, too, chief among them the Vex'Mara Kadeja, a dangerous ex-priestess who shares his dreams of conquest.

Pursued by Leoden and aided by the Shavaktiin, a secretive order of storytellers and mystics, the rebels flee to Veksh, a neighboring matriarchy ruled by the fearsome Council of Queens. Saffron is out of her world and out of her depth, but the further she travels, the more she finds herself bound to her friends with ties of blood and magic.

Can one girl - an accidental worldwalker - really be the key to saving Kena? Or will she just die trying?

Villain Keeper by Laurie McKay {4 Stars}

Villain Keeper by Laurie McKay is an intriguing reverse-portal fantasy that ponders the question what would happen if a prince from a fantasy world stumbled into our world? There is of course also a fun mystery and shenanigans in Villain Keeper, but I was continuously enthralled by the realistic way that McKay imagined how people would really react to a young boy claiming he’s a prince from a magical land. Also there are dragons and really beautiful chapter headers, so how can you go wrong ;-).

Note: I received a copy of Villain Keeper from the author.

The first book in an epic new series for fans of The School for Good and Evil and The Land of Stories.

All his life, Prince Caden has dreamed of slaying a dragon. But before he has the chance, he is ripped from his home in the Great Winterlands of Razzon and finds himself in Asheville, North Carolina—a land with no magic and no dragons.

Or so he thinks. The longer Caden spends in Asheville, the more he comes to realize that there is unexpected and dangerous magic in this strange land. There just may be dragons here, too. But what if Caden's destiny isn't to slay a dragon, after all?

The Whisper by Aaron Starmer {Just Hatched}

Just Hatched Book Feature

Just Hatched is a feature where I share my first impressions of a book after the first chapter. Check out the announcement post for more information.

The Whisper by Aaron Starmer is the sequel to The Riverman, and much to my chagrin I haven’t had the chance to catch up yet but really want to tell you how awesome I think this trilogy is going to be! I remember Christina of A Reader of Fictions pushing The Riverman for middle grade fantasy lovers, and so of course I had to bite. Even from just the first chapter I can tell this is definitely a book for me :D.

Note: I received an advanced copy of The Whisper from the publisher. Some things may have changed in the final version.

Twelve-year-old Alistair Cleary has washed up on shore. But where? It seems to be Aquavania, the magical realm where children create entire worlds from their imagination. There’s something wrong, though. The creators have disappeared and the worlds are falling apart.

All Alistair wants is to find his friend Fiona Loomis and go home. Easier said than done. Animals made of starlight, a megalomaniacal boy king, and astronauts who peddle riddles are hard enough to outwit, but they’re only the beginning.

To find Fiona, Alistair must travel from world to world. He must confront the mistakes of his past. And he must face countless monsters, including the soul-stealing stalker that some people call the Riverman, the merciless but misunderstood servant of Aquavania who refers to himself as the Whisper.
