Three Parts Dead Read-Along {Part 1}

Three Parts Dead Read Along

Part 1!

I haven’t done a read-along in SO LONG, but when I saw that Dab of Darkness was organizing one for Three Parts Dead, I couldn’t resist! I bought a copy months ago knowing that the premise started with a god dying and that’s really all I need in my fantasy ;-). I also was pumped to see a gorgeous woman of color on the cover with a kick-ass glowy sword in her hand :D. Since this is a read-a-long, there will be spoilers below if you haven’t read up to Chapter 8 in Three Parts Dead, but for those who haven’t read it yet: READ IT NOW!

1.      Max Gladstone isn’t holding any hands here, we’re dropped straight into the world (which is a bit ironic given the start – but I’ll get to that) and expected to pick up and run with it.  Are you enjoying the style and, more to the point,  what ‘reveals’ have been the most surprising for you so far??

I LOVE THIS STYLE! In order to stick with pretty much any book, I need to be curious about the world and eager to discover more so Gladstone is getting the points needed to get on my auto-buy list here ;-). I’m having loads of fun figuring out what the Craft actually involves and what the rules are!

2.      At the start of the book Tara graduates and is cast out of school (literally from a great height) simultaneously – any ideas about why that might be?

At first I honestly thought that this was just the normal way for graduates of the school to leave, but then she started referring to her time in a prison and how her Professors probably don’t much like what she is now doing. Given her awesome snarkiness and brilliance, I wonder if she just refused to put up with a blowhard professor ;-).
3.      I’m always interested in the magical systems and how they work and the one here seems to almost be a ‘payback’ type of affair.  What are your thoughts about the magical system so far, we do have a dead deity after all, not to mention it appears that regular everyday people can access magic as well as deities. Discuss please (if only to enlighten my tiny brain!)

So it sounds like magic used to be only for deities but then Craftpeople learned how to access that power. Tara’s work seems to involve corpses a lot too though in addition to messing with the elements. I got the impression the payback system was just for gods since they get magic from belief or something? I’m not really sure how it all ties together, but I have faith (haha) that there are some awesome rules underlying it all ;-).

4.      We’re only a third in but how are you feeling towards the characters so far. Are you developing any favorites already, any sneaky suspicions of any of the characters or are you loving them all?

Tara is the best, obviously! Her boss is interesting but we haven’t gotten to know her enough for me to really pass judgement. I like that there are no clear good guys or bad guys in the story though, just lots of sides to everything. I am hoping we get to know Shale more though, I like him :D.

Overall I’m so so glad I finally started this series! I’m such a sucker for cool magic systems and spunky characters so I just can’t get enough. Now that I’ve written up these answers, don’t mind me while I go read ahead ;-).

  1. I’m also thinking of buying this in print and getting the rest of the series. Depends on how it turns out, but it’s looking really good so far.

If I had more time I’d make notes and try and figure out the magic system – it’s so intriguing but kind of confusing too. It’s weird how the people who are the most skilled at working with magic are basically lawyers. Never has the profession looked so cool!

    • Haha right?? I’d totally be a lawyer if I could get mad magic powers! I totally did end up ordering the complete trilogy in hardback >.> *pets*

  2. Sounds like a really interesting book! I will have to check it out. I want to read more POC characters, and they’re sometimes hard to find in fantasy. Plus the storyline and magic system both sound intriguing.

That’s awesome that you thought all graduates were literally tossed out as part of their graduation. That would add a little something special to graduation ceremonies!

I too really enjoy that there are no clear cut good or bad guys (yet). And Shale seems like a very interesting character, though I wouldn’t blame him if he held a little bit of a grudge towards Tara.

  4. Have you met Cat and Raz yet? LOVE THEM!!!

  5. Yay! You like Shale too! (I feel like I should not be so happy people are liking him.)

As a bit of an aside, can I nab your readalong banner for use one the next posts? (I’ll upload it to my own server and give due credit, of course.)

I love the magical system in this so far., so I hope that we’ll get to learn more about it as the story goes on. I think we should, given that this reads as much as Tara’s story as it is the mystery’s. And I agree with Lynn that I like the partner-type feel Tara and Abelard have. I really like that they’re opposites in terms of belief and still get along. It feels like that’s a nuance that you often don’t get anymore while it works so beautifully.

    • I will always love Shale!

Yes, go for it! I should really email it out or something but I’m lazy ;-)

Such a good point, it’s fun seeing people on either side of this religious divide come together to get stuff done!

      • Yay! I hope we’ll get to see more of him soon!

        <3 Thank you! <3

It is! And I think it's an important thing to show too since our world increasingly tries to polarise people with different beliefs or ideals. :( I've seen people with differing beliefs and ideals in fiction get along before, but I'm not sure I've seen a contrast this strong. I really like that.

        • Agreed! That’s something I’ve always loved with Sanderson’s work is that he shows the “villain’s” perspective and makes them really sympathetic so you realize that they aren’t actually evil, just trying to live!

  6. Yeah, I think as we read more about Tara it’s a bit easier to see that she’s impulsive and maybe doesn’t like authority, plus she’s not averse to taking risks – I guess at graduation they thought they’d just kick her out and see if she survived. I would like to know what she did to deserve it though.
The magical system – to be honest I don’t think I’ve really got a grip on that yet. It seems to be about souls in particular, although I’m sure there was also something about starlight when Tara was reanimating the corpses in her village? It will be good to read on and see how it develops.
I like the partner type feel with Tara and Abelard and also that they’re opposites in terms of belief. It’s still early days so I’m looking forward to finding out more.
Plus – gargoyles and vampires. Didn’t see that coming.
    Lynn :D

    • Yeah, she had to have at least kept her mouth shut until graduation right, so she is able to control her impulses sometimes! Haha!

The payment of coins with soul attached, I completely forgot about that! This is all a bit confusing, but in the best way :D

I could do without the vampires, but I love gargoyles ;-)
