Top Ten Books on My Summer TBR {2014}

Top Ten Tuesday

Thanks to the gals of The Broke and The Bookish for hosting this meme every week!

So my review pile has gotten a bit out of control…. Therefore, this summer is going to be dedicated to getting completely caught up and ahead on my physical review pile and trying to chip away at my eARC list (I’ve reached the point of no return when it comes to being on top of eARCs I’m afraid…). I’m also hoping that I’ll be able to squeeze in a couple of the 30 BEA books that I’m determined to read before 2015 >.>.

Upcoming Review Copies

Storm Siren Traitor's Blade The Shadow Throne The Fog of Forgetting

The most exciting list is obviously the upcoming physical review copy list, since then you can drag me into a buddy read and we can both make sure that we stay on top of our lists! :D

  1. Storm Siren – I got this one at BEA through a publicity company and it looks like a lot of fun!
  2. Traitor’s Blade – This is another one from the same publicity company. I had an eARC already, but since they were nice enough to hand me a physical copy, I will definitely be reading Traitor’s Blade soon. I’ve heard awesome things!
  3. The Shadow Throne – I received this one for review a while ago. I’ve been planning to read the first book for ages, so it was a good kick in the pants to do just that ;-).
  4. The Fog of Forgetting – This is the last one that I got from the publicity company at BEA. Middle grade fantasy? Sign me up :D. Also keep your eye out for a really awesome giveaway of a necklace inspired by this story at the beginning of next month >.>.

Overdue Review Copies

The Silk Map Range of Ghosts The Adjacent

  1. The Silk Map – I feel quite bad about being overdue on this one since I got it before the pub date and needed to read the first book still… It’s high on the list though, so I’ll definitely finish it this summer and be guilt-free :D.
  2. Range of Ghosts – I actually received the entire trilogy to review, but I’m going to decrease my anxiety by pretending I only need to read the first book and then I’ll go from there >.>.
  3. The Adjacent – This one I accepted rather whimsically and only realized after that I probably shouldn’t have. I am intrigued since it is by the same author who wrote The Prestige and it looks like a fun and trippy sci-fi. However, I for some reason think it is going to be dense and so have been putting it off…. Anyone read it?

Overdue eARCs

The Lascar's Dagger The Islands of Chaldea A Creature of Moonlight

I’ll hopefully be doing more eARC reading this summer as well, since I’m going to be trying to get back to a regular exercise routine that allows for reading. I’m thinking stationary bicycling is the right option currently, and then I can bribe myself by reading :D.

  1. The Lascar’s Dagger – This is the last March book, so I really really want to get it read so I can at least be caught up through March, ha. It looks interesting and I’ve heard mixed but “cotton candy” type reviews, i.e., it isn’t ground-breaking but it is fun.
  2. The Islands of Chaldea – I was so pumped when I first downloaded this one since it looks like awesome middlegrade fantasy with sailing. Therefore, I need to get on that!
  3. A Creature of Moonlight – I actually forgot to download this one before it was archived, so I bought a physical copy and it is sooooo pretty. I of course love dragons, so it is a shame that I haven’t read the pretty dragon book yet ;-).

As you can see, I’m trying to be horrendously responsible this summer, but I’m sure that I’ll slip in some fun BEA or unexpected but awesome review books as well. I’ve been trying to hold back from requesting or accepting too many books each month, so for August I actually only have three review books! Therefore, I do have hope that I will actually be able to get caught up by the end of the summer at least on physical books ;-). What are you planning to read this summer?

  1. Storm Siren looks so good, and, if I am so honest, the cover sold it for me. I’ll get it to it, and it makes me feel relaxed when the people at BEA confirmed that it isn’t religious.

  2. Adjacent never hit my radar so no I haven’t read it….dense does not sound fun. I’ve read 3 of the others you have on your list and plan to read quite a few of the other ones you will be reading. But that’s to be expected at this point right? LOL

    • I have no actual evidence that The Adjacent is dense, I’ll let you know ;-)

Haha, yes, it would be very strange if we didn’t have overlap

  3. This is a really cool looking list, I want to check so many of these out! Happy reading :)

    Check out my TTT!

  4. I haven’t heard of any of these but they all look pretty good, and I’m definitely a huge fan of fantasy. Guess I’ll have to look out for your reviews ;)

  5. I love the cover for A Creature in the Moonlight! Very Pretty!

  6. I’m too scared to list out what I should read, afraid I’ll feel more pressure. But, I guess its also a way to see all the great things you have lined up to read. Enjoy! (I’ve heard lots really good things about Traitor’s Blades!)

    • Hehe, ignorance is bliss sometimes ;-). Fortunately for me, I’m really excited about everything I need to read, I just wish I could read it all at once!

  7. I always seem to be behind in review books. D: Thankfully, I’m almost to the rare spot of being caught up, so I’ll be reading primarily personal TBR books next month! Then I’ll go go back to my review pile in August. (It appears that I’m in the opposite reading situation from you right now. :D )

I haven’t heard of most of the books on your list, but I’m going to look through them and add a couple to my Goodreads. :)

  8. I love The Prestige! I didn’t even know it was a book so, shamefully, I haven’t read it, but the movie was such a mindf*ck I’m still not sure I know exactly what happened. I love movies like that. And since the movie is always worse than the book I have high hopes for it. Anyways, I hope the Adjacent is just as good!

    • Yes, I loved how crazy The Prestige movie was! It’ll be all a question about whether the writing pulls me in as much as the acting ;-)

  9. I want to say responsibility is overrated…but whenever I shirk it, I feel guilty later. Maybe a buddy read on Islands of Chaldea? :)

  10. OOh nice! Those are all (mostly) new to me! Hope you enjoy them all!

  11. Traitor’s Blade!!! Get on that! :D

And I hope you’ll like The Shadow Throne more than The Thousand Names – though I saw from goodreads that you’re not into military fantasy so it might be a toss up. TST is more about a revolution, but still with elements of military.

  12. So many books! At least you’ll always be able to read something you’re in the mood for!

Curious to hear what you make of The Silk Map and Range of Ghosts though. I have heard mostly good things about both, but haven’t got around to checking the out yet. Maybe I need another push…

    • Haha, yes, so many! I strangely feel like I always end up not sticking to these lists, but I’m gonna try! Mostly because I really want to get caught up on physical books.

I’ll be sure to review them both :D. I’m hoping to get to those two sooner rather than later too.

  13. Ah, yes. TRAITOR’S BLADE is in my stack. I hear it’s a bit of a play on the Three Musketeers so I’m really looking forward to it!

    • I just finished it and yeah, I can see that, though the MC is without his buddies for a lot of the story, ha.

  14. I am so excited you picked The Islands of Chaldea for your list, or I might never have heard about it. Diana Wynne Jones is one of my favorite authors, so when she passed away in 2011, I figured that anything she hadn’t finished would just stay unpublished. I had no idea that her sister was a writer too, and now she’s finished the book for her. I cannot wait to read it!

I haven’t heard of most of the other books, but they all sound amazing. Enjoy your summer reading! :)

  15. I’m never going to be caught up with my reading. My NetGalley folder on my Kindle is getting shamefully large, and while I don’t get a large number of physical review copies, I still have enough glaring balefully at me from my bookshelves to make me feel a little bit guilty that I haven’t read more of them yet.

That’s part of the reason why last week and this week have been a book binge for me. Trying to read as much as I can while I’m still unemployed and before my roommate comes home for 2 weeks and I won’t have as much spare time on my hands. That way I can get through more of my ARC pile and feel a bit more productive and a bit less lazy over the whole thing.

Good luck to you with your summer reading!

    • Yeah, I would have to stop accepting review copies for like six months to actually catch up, and then I would feel like I was behind on cool new reads!

I saw that you’re doing a reading binge, so much fun! I did that in May when I took a week off from school/work and had a reading vacation, haha. I kind of want to do it again >.>

  16. I really want to read that trilogy by Elizabeth Bear (the one starting with Range of Ghosts), I heard so many good things about it :) Maybe once I clear some of the trilogies sitting on my shelf, lol

Great stack of books to read! Happy reading :) My TTT

  17. Wow, I have actually read three of those. Our reads don’t overlap that much very often.

  18. Ooo, an interesting list to consider! I don’t have a top ten, as such, but I do have an ARC of The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley, some neat sounding horror from Ragnarok Publications and a copy of The Hero and the Crown (Robin McKinley) that I bought on a recommendation. Also the Apex Book of World SF 3. Because World SF. :D

  19. My list today is comprised of eARCs too! These all look up my alley, but Range of Ghosts has a sweet-looking cover. Good luck on your reading goals!

  20. You’ve got a great list, Anya! I don’t have any of these books, but I’ll be interested in your reviews after you read them! It looks like you’ll have a great summer…
