Top Ten Favorite Book Beginnings and Endings

Top Ten Tuesday

Thanks to the gals of The Broke and The Bookish for hosting this meme every week!

This topic was a little tricky for me since I have a hard time remembering anything about a book after a month or two. There are just so many new stories that I can’t keep everything in my head D: . However, that also meant that if I did remember a beginning or ending of a book, it belongs on this list since it was memorable enough for even my head to hold on to ;-).

The Weight of Souls Siege and Storm steelheart by Brandon Sanderson

Each of these books made it onto this list for their own unique reason, which I’m happy to see! The Weight of Souls opens immediately with Taylor tracking down a murderer and letting a mysterious Darkness consume him, so we know right away what kind of stakes she is playing for. Siege and Storm grabbed me with Sturmhond of course ;-). Finally, I’m so excited for Steelheart to hit shelves because that beginning is epic, all the feels!!!

Through the Ever Night The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson ARC grave mercy Destiny Binds

Testament of Jessie Lamb Fair Game Stranger in a Strange Land

I really only have one criteria for an amazing ending: surprise me but make sense! I love twists that in hindsight are so obvious but that I don’t see coming. All of these books have that aspect to them either because the author went in a completely different direction than I thought, or because they took it to a level I really didn’t think they would go (no one is safe from death in these books!). A good ending can rescue a book that I haven’t been enjoying, though all of these I loved from the first page ;-).

What are you favorites this week?? Link me up, I’m always on the lookout for more books with twists :D

The only one of these I’ve read is Siege and Storm! The horror! But I agree, hard not to be captivated by that beginning from what you learn of Darkling’s powers and the introduction of the interesting character of Sturmhond.

Through the Ever Night and Grave Mercy I own and are on my TBR pile, so hopefully I’ll get to them soon. Seeing them listed as having your favorite endings is encouraging, because the ending is usually the most important part of the book for me!

    • Siege and Storm really should have had it’s own category of all the awesome, hehe. The ending is key for me as well, and it seems like authors put more epicness into the endings than the beginnings usually, with obvious exceptions above haha

Well, I’m super pumped because your selections for beginnings & endings are books that either, 1. I own copies of and are coming up soon. i.e. Steelheart, Rithmatist, Grace Mercy. Or, 2. are high-priority wishlist items. i.e.the Grisha series and book 2 of the Across the Universe series. My reading future looks awesome :D Fantastic picks as usual Anya, I love seeing the Sanderson books ♥

  3. I am so close to looking through my books and finding my Mercy Graves book…

  4. Yes! Surprise endings are the best! But I still love endings that I know have been coming and I’ve been anticipating since the first page and then it HAPPENS and it’s awesome :D I’m a weird one like that, because sometimes I like to know what’s going to happen.

    • Hehe, that’s an excellent point. Especially if it’s a big battle against a bad guy you reeeeaaally don’t like ;-)

  5. Haha, Siege and Storm is on my list as well, but for the ending! Also, I cannot WAIT to read Steelheart!

  6. I haven’t read any of the books on your list, but I have Grave Mercy, Fair Game, and Through the Ever Night on my wishlist. Thanks for sharing!

    • Oo, are you a Mercy Thompson fan?? I’m sooo excited for the next in Alpha and Omega specifically because of Fair Game’s ending :D

  7. Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads says:

I never remember book much after I’ve read them, unless they are exceptional. So I didn’t do this TTT because I can’t remember

You’ve got some really good looking books there! Grave Mercy was great and I loved the twists and turns throughout it! It’s the only one on your list I’ve read, but you have some on there I want to read! Great list!

    • Hehe, completely fair! Have you read the second book yet? I still really need to find time for that one!

      • Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads says:

I did read it! And I actually loved it even more than Grave Mercy because it was more personal and less political :)

  8. I’m so excited to read Steelheart. I’m so happy to hear it’s amazing. I like for books to have a good twist, too. It’s always fun when a book goes in a direction I wasn’t expecting. Great list!
