Top Ten Favorite Character Names

Top Ten Tuesday

Thanks to the gals of The Broke and The Bookish for hosting this meme every week!

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is going to be entertaining, have no doubt. I have really no metric for judging what my favorite character names are; it is generally quite correlated to how much I like the character and book ;-). However, there are some names that just annoy me because they don’t seem to fit the character, so those are easy to rule out! Let’s attempt to answer this with limited insanity shall we?

Also I’m completely horrible at remembering character names so I had to look up almost all of these even though they are some of my favorite books *sigh*.

Legend by Marie Lu

1. Day is the romantic interest/co-MC and has a pretty great name. I love the symbolism that it plays on and I love that it is actually a legitimate shortening of his real name, though not a traditional one.

The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

2 & 3. Locke is the series MC and Sabetha is the romantic interest and I quite enjoy both their names. They are names that I haven’t really run into in fantasy books before, but they aren’t crazy and impossible to pronounce and remember. That is the sign of a good fantasy name :D.

Bang by Lisa McMann

4. Jules is the MC in the Visions series and I assume her full name is Julia, but I like her shortening. I listened to the first book on audio, so that was a bit confusing since I thought it was spelled “Jewels” and made me think of euphemisms, haha. However, once I figured out the actual spelling, I’ve become quite fond of it.

Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi

5 & 6. Aria and Perry! This couple better have awesome names picked out for their kids because pressure is on. I love that while Perry’s full name, Peregrine, is obviously picked for it’s meaning, Aria’s is too even though it isn’t emphasized as much in the books. Since Aria loves to sing, her name makes quite a bit of sense ;-).

The Bitter Kingdom by Rae Carson

7. Elisa is definitely a case where my love for this character makes me inherently love her name as well! But really, it’s a pretty name and I like that it is similar to names I’ve encountered in real life, but just a little different.

Siege and Storm

8 & 9. Alina is of course a rather delicate and pretty name for such a rough and tumble girl, but I still like it! I feel like I’m betraying someone, but my other favorite name from this series is The Darkling since it isn’t a title I’ve read before and does such a great job portraying exactly what this guy is *shivers*.

Destiny Binds

10. Finally, Scout! Scout is an awesome MC who goes through some pretty crazy stuff in the Timber Wolves series and I think I love her all the more for it. I also just love names for girls that sound like guy names ;-).

So that is my rather random list of characters and character names that I like! Link me up yours :D.

  1. I watched Gargoyles, so Elisa is a name that I just adore.

    Good list!!

  2. Alina Arana says:

Oh hey my name is Alina i should read those Siege and Storm books!

  3. Love your list! I am reading the last few pages of Legend now and agreed with your comments about Day! Two of my favorites are Katniss from the Hunger Games and Katsa from the Graceling series. I like cats so maybe that has something to do with it :)

    • Oo, how could I forget Katsa! That’s another one that is close to a regular name but just different enough to be interesting.

  4. I’ve always loved the following character names (they’re in no particular order)

Mia from The Princess Diaries- idk why, but it just feels like the perfect name for the character

Tris from Divergent- that is one name that is unique, awesome-sounding, AND meaningful at the same time. I just love it!

America Singer from The Selection- sounds really cool somehow…

Aria from pll AND Under the never sky is one of my fav names too. And also, Elisa! Thats like so so good for the caracter and plus, like you said ts a pretty name

  5. I like Scout and Locke. cool list.

  16. I have to agree: I love the name Scout for a girl! I do tend to enjoy names like that, but only if they’re not overboard.

    • Definitely, I like that it’s definitely a guy’s name, but not a super common guy name, so I don’t really have any associations with it

  17. Locke Lamora made my list too, so nice to find another Gentleman Bastards enthusiast. I love how just by moving the L his last name can spell amoral :-) I like Sabetha, but not sure how to pronounce it :-)

    • Woot! What did you think of the latest book? Whoa, I totally didn’t see the amoral trick before, nice eye! According to the audiobooks, Sabetha is like sad without the d, beth the name, and then ah :)

      • thanks for the tip, I’m still reading Republic of Thieves. So wish I didn’t have to go to work to pay the bills :-(

        • Agreed! Though I probably would get sick of reading if that is all I did all day long, I definitely fantasize about becoming independently wealthy and doing just that ;-)

  18. Mary @ Travels with Mary says:

I love Aria and Alina– maybe I just love A-names!! Also I hadn’t heard of the Timber Wolves series, so I’m adding it to my list! Thanks!!

    Here’s my TTT!

  19. I struggled to come up with ten names, too, though I took a slightly different slant…lol.

I, of course, haven’t read some of these books, but I agree these names are good ones. I especially agree that names in sci fi or fantasy are nice if they are a little different, but not so different I spend the whole book trying to figure out how to pronounce them!

    • Hehe, if they are too crazy, I just kind of skim over them when reading, they become a shape in my brain instead of a word >.> This then fails me when character names are too similar!

  20. Those are some fantastic names. I don’t think I could narrow it down to 10 LOL

  21. Scout, I love that name! You picked some great ones that I was definitely debating adding to my list their is a billion names that I love and it was so hard to only pick ten but, my list would have been soo long lol.
