Top Ten Goals For 2014

Top Ten Tuesday Thanks to the gals of The Broke and The Bookish for hosting this meme every week!

2013 was a good year for my blogging. I discovered Twitter, started delving into what I wanted to do to increase the blog’s success, had a couple of really popular posts, and have generally been building my stats and meeting lots of awesome new people. I’m at a place where I get at least a comment or two on nearly every post, which makes me really happy since I love talking to you all. December things slipped a bit in terms of quality content (from my perspective), so 2014 is mostly going to be about increasing the awesome content amount and continuing to build a great community here at On Starships and Dragonwings :D. Here are the things I’m planning on working on that I can currently think of >.>:

  1. Stay a month ahead of review books – My review pile is no where near unmanageable, I’m in fact quite happy with my reading schedule and the number of books I have to read. I’m not behind on anything, but I think I’m going to move to a month ahead goal. I’ll get all of February’s review books read and reviewed in January. Then once I’m done with the next month’s review books, I’ll spend the rest of the month reading all those other books I want to read :D.
  2. Comment on other blogs more – whenever I read a post, take the extra minute to click through a comment. I read through my feeds in the morning while eating breakfast and I’m just not a social person in the morning >.>. A lot of the time I’m just looking for a discussion post that I can read while stuffing my face, no typing necessary. However, this means that I am horrible at commenting even when I like a post! And since I’m reading in a feed reader, you don’t even know that I spent time reading your post D:. I’m aiming to fix this in 2014 by always taking the minute to click through and leave a comment when a post catches my eye. I’ll also be continuing to collect posts for SFF Fridays, so that way you know I was there too ;-).
  3. Aim for at least two discussion posts a month plus other fun posts on Saturdays – discussion posts sort of fell off the edge when December rolled around and I’m so sorry D:. I have a lot of ideas in my head, I just need to find the motivation to type them up. Therefore, I’ll be aiming for two discussion posts a month with other of the old features I have laying around in between. My schedule is actually really packed for the first couple months of the year due to the read-along, so Saturdays are going to become fun other bookish content day!
  4. Work on building Book Buddies – I started this group called Book Buddies on Book Blogging.net and I’m really geeked about it. Basically, it’s a way to read a book you were planning to read anyway with someone else (or a couple someones) and chat as you read. It’s kind of the relaxed version of a read-along or book club ;-). I’m planning on having monthly posts on the blog highlighted which books I’d like to buddy up for, so keep your eye out for those!
  5. Respond to comments on the blog on time – Due to school and work, I sometimes go a week without responding to comments and I feel pretty bad about that. What are your expectations when it comes to comment responses? Do you think that if  blogger hasn’t responded within a couple of days, they won’t? How often do you check back?
  6. More international giveaways – I love doing ARC giveaways, but I just can’t afford the international shipping for those, so I want to make sure to include more international giveaways through the Book Depository. International folks: would you prefer pre-order giveaways along with ARC giveaways or giveaways for books that are already out?
  7. Figure out reading game rolling around in my head – I have this vague idea of making a game out of reading books in my head. I need to get all the details worked out to make sure that it will be easy for you to participate no matter how much time you have and make sure that I can keep up with it, but I’m excited :D.
  8. Visit all SF/F Fridays blogs and build SF/F Fridays – I rolled out SF/F Fridays this year and it’s been going very well so far! I’m hoping to continue building that in 2014 so that it becomes a valuable resource for sci-fi and fantasy readers to find out about new sf/f books, giveaways, and general book loving discussion.
  9. Work on community – I’ve realized that my central goal when it comes to this blog is to build a community. As an extension to that, I want to become more a part of the blogging community, so in 2014 I’ll be aiming to chat with people more on Twitter, comment back on your blog when you comment on mine, and participate in community events whenever I can. I’m off to a wretched start since I won’t be doing Bout of Books (gotta get the semester going too, haha), but I’ll try ;-).
  10. Request books I have a good chance of liking – I’m still figuring out the whole requesting ARCs landscape, so this is a two-fold goal. 1) Only request books I think I’ll enjoy, which I’ve already been doing pretty well. I make sure to really read the description, go over to GoodReads to see if anyone has any reviews up yet that will warn me about hidden problems, and I’m generally only requesting from larger publishing houses because I’m more assured about the quality then. The other part of this is 2) actually request the books I think I’ll like and will be able to promote. This means if the book isn’t on NG/EW, writing up my stats-filled, professional review copy request email and sending it out at the right time and possibly a couple of times. I’m also trying to figure out the “mailing lists” thing since it sounds like most publishers have a mailing list of bloggers they email catalogues to?

Anyway, those are the book blogging things I will be working on in the coming year :D. What are your goals for 2014? Any advice on mine? ;-)

  2. Ooh a reading game sounds awesome! I hope you do develop it and I wish you luck, and luck with your other goals too. :)

    My goals are here: http://roseshadowink.wordpress.com/2014/01/07/top-ten-tuesday-top-ten-resolutions-for-2014/

  3. Responding to comments in a timely manner is one of my goals, too. I am horrible at it, because I haven’t always had a lot of time, and that just fell by the wayside. TBH, I don’t really care comments I leave aren’t replied to, because it’s often hard to know. On blogger blogs, I have no way of knowing if the blog author replied, same with wordpress hosted because I end up using my Twitter account to comment.

I like your goals. Good luck on growing your blog even more! #4 sounds great – I need to start using BB, I just haven’t really had time to set up my profile and check it out.

BTW, thanks for linking any f/sf reviews I do in your weekly linkups. :D

    • Yeah, I never check back on comments unless there is some sort of email alert of a response. I just comment on too many places to remember to go back to them all D:

You’re welcome :D Thanks for writing awesome reviews! If I ever forget feel free to link ’em as well ;-) I just try to collect reviews I spot during the week too hehe

  4. Great goals – I have a lot of similar ones. As for comments – my goal is to respond to comments within a week. It might be a little long, but its the best I think I can do. I haven’t requested books from any major publishers yet – I’m not sure I’m ready – but good luck with that! And you’ve got me very curious about this game… Do tell soon :)

    • That’s what I’m ending up doing too, haha. I feel like that’s okay and really getting caught up on the weekends seems quite reasonable. Like for example: I’m catching up on comments while the boyfriend plays Angry Birds on a Friday night, haha.

It took me almost two years to start requesting directly from the major pubs so I don’t blame you ;-).

I really need to have an evening of energy to write up my ideas, but hopefully that’ll happen soon!

  5. Wonderful resolutions! I’ll have to check out your book buddies venture!! I must have missed the launch, Curse my constant busy work schedule *shakes fist* Man I wish we could get paid to read and blog-hop hehe! Anyways I also only recently clued in (I think) on your SFF Fridays *blushes* so I really do want to get into that as well. I think it’s a rocking idea but then again you’ve always been innovative with your content here :D Anyways we absolutely share wanting to comment more – both on other blogs and to comments on our own blogs! I wish you nothing but success with all your goals!! xx

    • No worries, that’s why I mentioned it again ;-) *is sneaky* I hope work lets you do all the bloggy things you want to this year :D Who needs work ;-)

  6. I would also love to get a month ahead on my reviews. RIght now, I mostly write them the night before! Some leeway would make blogging more relaxing :)

I’m excited to get more involved with the community too, through commenting, twitter, and event participation. Although I’m pretty over-scheduled for January, I’m also excited to get involved in your book buddies group in February. I love being able to discuss books with other bloggers, so I think the idea of putting together small, informal groups seems like a lot of fun :)
    DoingDewey recently posted…January Read-a-longsMy Profile

    • Wow, do you time it so that you read it the night before as well? I always review very soon after finishing the book since otherwise I forget everything, haha.

Yey, I’m so excited for you to join us! Do you know what you are going to be reading in February?

      • If I’m finishing the night before the review needs to be posted, it’s been a very bad week! I do usually review within a week or two though or else I end up doing a mini-review later, because I can’t remember enough for a full review.

In February, I’m planning on reviewing The Fairytale Keeper, Three Souls, and The Future of the Mind. So far your group seems to be mostly people who read a lot of fantasy, so I might try to pick up an ARC of something you all are reading as well, Otherwise there might not be much overlap, although I’m sure the group will get more diverse as it grows. I’ll be sure to add my books to the forum anyway in case someone wants to jump in :)

        • Haha, we’re going to be doing a lot of sci-fi this month I think, so really I’d say just post your list and maybe someone else will be excited about one of your books!

  7. These are great goals. The game sounds so much fun. I can’t wait for you to premier it. I have a hard time with book buddies because I often can’t read books on a schedule. I’m just not good at it.

  8. These sound awesome! I love the Book Buddy idea so I’ll have to check out the website. I am extremely impressed by the fact that you could get a month ahead of your review books. My review pile is pretty unorganized and I’m going to work on it. Good luck with all your goals!

    • I use a todo list app to keep track of the pub dates of all my books, so that helps a lot even if it makes me feel a little ridiculous, haha

  9. I’m with you on needing to comment more (both in reply to things on my blog and around the community). It’s something I’ve let go in the past two years because of the time commitment, but I really do feel more connected and have a more diverse reading appetite when I am.

Great list – thanks for sharing! I’ll have to look out for your SF/F Fridays!

    • So agreed, at the end of a long day, I just want to snuggle up with a book, but it’s so much fun to talk to people once I drag my butt to the computer, ahah

  10. Nice set of goals! I like your idea of being a month ahead with your reviews, as I’ve come down to the wire too many times and it’s nerve-wracking! Good luck!

    • Exactly, I hate that pressured feel! Plus if I get the next months all read, then I won’t feel guilty slipping in some me books, since otherwise it feels like there is never an end to the pile, haha.

  11. Great goals you set for yourself! I can find myself in quite some of your goals.
I hope you reach all the goals you set for yourself :)

  12. About the INT giveaways: I don’t mind what you decide! You could always do a giveaway for a certain price, so people can pick whether they want a pre-order from the book or choose something else? A reading game, sounds very interesting :D And I always love reading discussion posts. Good luck!
    Mel@thedailyprophecy recently posted…FF 24. What I look for in book boyfriends.My Profile

    • Awesome! I like having giveaways that are targeted a bit so that it doesn’t feel like I’m just paying my followers, haha, but I’m sure I’ll do more of those as well this year since they’re easy and accessible to everyone.

  13. Good luck with your resolutions, Anya! I’m sure you’ll kick their asses. ;)

I’m very curious to see what this reading game you have in mind is! I’m always up for making reading more fun than it already is, especially if it helps to lift up those books that you don’t quite like as much as you wish you did. I’ve seen a lot of bloggers, including myself, resolve to participate in the community a lot more this year; maybe we’ll all bump into each other and help each other along with that resolution!

    • *gets ass kicking shoes on* :D

So far I’m really excited about how much everyone is re-engaging. I’m seeing lots of great discussions and events already, I hope it continues throughout the year :D

  14. I did my first buddy read last year and I’ve become a huge fan, I’m definitely planning on doing more of those this year. And at some point this year I’d like to bring my blog back full force as well though right now I’m a bit more focused on a presence on my YouTube channel since I get videos out quicker than posts. You’ve got some great goals though and I wish you luck at achieving them all. [:

    • Yey, I’m so excited to see you coming back :D One of these days I will start watching booktubing channels, promise D:

  15. All of your goals really sound fantastic, some of them are pretty much the same or similar to my own, as well. But, I really like the idea of Book Buddies, I think it’s a great idea and definitely worth the time looking into it. *g* I might just have to do that. And, I always need to learn to comment more on other blogs that I follow on a regular basis, and build up better communication between myself and other’s in the blogging community.

The requesting books thing, I am only going to be requesting those ARC’s or eGalley’s that I know FOR SURE that I really want to read and then I’m going to strive to read more “ME” books that are already sitting on my shelves or on my Kindle. I don’t want to get so bogged down with review books, that it takes the fun out of reading what I’d like to read or what I’ve been gifted or already have. :)

    • Hehe, you might! *wink wink*

I hear you about the me books on the shelf. I have so many that I bought last year and I have no idea when I’m going to read them. I’m basically prepared for the apocalypse, plenty of reading material to last me a year ;-). I really like review books when I find something I hadn’t heard of previously and enjoy it, since I might have missed it otherwise, but I’m trying to really evaluate based on synopses and other reviews whether I’m excited about the book. Also since I heard about nearly everything coming out, if I don’t recognize the title I generally skip. That seems to be working as a great filter honestly.

  16. I know what you mean about not commenting … as you eat. Yep, guilty. I actually saw a post about it on Writer, Writer, Pants on Fire earlier this year (or last year, I guess) about how much time goes into creating content to post and how dishearteningly it is to put your words into a void with zero feedback. It guilt-tripped me like crazy, and I made a point to comment more after that, but I’m still less than good about it.

In terms of responding to comments, I’m trying to do it asap on my blog (mostly because I’m new and I want to give people a (favorable) reason to remember me … and I check my email compulsively ^^), but because of the setup of your reply emails, I wouldn’t worry about once a week. Your emails remind me what I said last, so I have no problem following the train of thought down the road. Other people may prefer instant feedback, but so long as it’s written down and I’m not expected to remember what I wrote, anytime’s good. :)

That is true, I like having the reply notification since I hope people get the email even if it takes me a bit, haha.

  17. Awesome resolutions.

  19. All great goals! I’m intrigued by the game and reading? interesting. I am trying to so hard to reply to comments in a timely manner. Things jut get away from me (all of us).

I can’t wait to see where 2014 takes you Anya!

  20. I hear you re: #5, I’m still catching up to comments made two months ago *blushes* Am definitely working on it this year *nods*

I’d love to do more giveaways as well (outside of the book blog tours that I’ve been participating in)–they’re a lot of fun! In answer to your question about it, pre-order giveaways sound good too.

Great list of resolutions! Best of luck with them this year :) My TTT

    • I’m a big fan of my to-do list application ToDoist since I can set recurring goals that force me to respond to comments once a week or such things ;-). So far it’s working, but it’s also so easy to postpone, haha.

Excellent to know, thank you for answering :D

  21. LeKeisha Thomas says:

Sounds great! I pray it all falls into place foryou. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do #4 with you guys. I actually can’t wait for that. I have one best friend, since preschool, and she works more than me and doesn’t have the time to sit and read. And, I have a cousin who, basically, reads everything that I like. We love the same things, but when I’m working she’s free and when she’s in class I’m free. We don’t have time to even chat really anymore. Book Buddies sound awesome! Can’t wait!

  22. Leanne Willingham says:

Oh gosh I’m so far *behind* on review books, I don’t know if I’ll ever dig myself out – much less get ahead. I wish you luck on keeping up with that one! This also goes with your #10 for me, as I requested a bunch of books I thought I would maybe like, instead of ones I thought I could love. Now I’m swamped with a bunch of “what was I thinking?” ARCs. ;)

I need to pick up the “comment on other blogs more” goal myself. I always click through if I want to read a post, rather than scanning them in the reader, but I don’t always leave a comment. Sometimes I have enough brain power going to read but not form a response, and then I feel bad for not leaving anything. I’m not social at all times of the day either. >_>

I’m also *super* behind on responding to some of the comments on my blog (which I should probably be doing instead of leaving comments on new blog posts, eek!). I’m having a hard time finding balance between that, trying to clean out my Feedly, read, and everything else. One of these days I’ll get the hang of it!
Leanne Willingham recently posted…Celtic Excursion 2014My Profile

    • There might be one review book from two years ago that I’m pretending doesn’t exist right now >.> It’s pathetic since if I just carved out time to read that one book, I would be 100% caught up, but I just keep putting it off….

Sounds like we both need to just DNF the crap out of those piles ;-) If a book is meh, I think it’s okay to give it 2-3 stars and move on ya know?

Nah, leaving comments on new blog posts was a previous goal so that’s good :D. *is totally unbiased ;-)* We need to just stop time for a while eh?

  23. Good luck with staying ahead of your review books, I can’t seem to manage this one :). I also want to comment more, be more sociable on Twitter and other bookish social sites. I want to write more discussion posts too. I’m also hoping on joining your read-alongs on Book Buddies :)

  24. Those are darn good goals! With number 10, it is tricky but if you put yourself on a 24 hour lock down after reading the synop then most times you can weed them out in your head :)

  25. Oh number ten is a hard one. The thing that no one really tells you about blogging is when you are in on the front line of reading new books you get a whole lot of MEH. Before blogging, even when reading books the day of release, you usually were a few reviews in and knew what to expect. At least that was what I found.

    • Right?? I’m getting a lot better of not being excited about a book just because it isn’t out yet. If I read the synopsis and am not feeling it, I can usually resist now. I used to give them the benefit of the doubt and figured I’d like most things from the big six publishers and wow was I wrong ;-)

  26. Jessica@a GREAT read says:
