Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2014

Top Ten Tuesday

Thanks to the gals of The Broke and The Bookish for hosting this meme every week!

I feel like I spent a lot of time reading authors I already knew I loved and sequels this year. I was in that mood where you just want a safe bet ya know? But, there are still of course lots of new authors that I discovered and loved, and perhaps read several of their books this year >.>.

Why Didn’t I Read Them Sooner??

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente The Martian by Andy Weir Among Thieves by Douglas Hulick Traitor's Blade Dreamer's Pool by Juliet Marillier

  1. The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland – I had been hearing about the Fairyland books for ages and of course knew I needed to read them given my undying love of middle grade fantasy. I was a little nervous they wouldn’t live up to the hype, but the first one definitely did! I still need to read the rest, but now I know that Valente won’t disappoint ;-).
  2. The Martian – This one seemed to gather momentum slowly this summer and once I heard two of my non-blogging friends rave about it, I realized I needed to get caught up on the awesome! It was a whole lot of fun, and I’m pretty curious if Weir has another great book in him, but I’ll be watching the movie no matter what!
  3. Among Thieves – I got the second book in this series for review early in the year and so jumped into the series happily. I have no idea how I missed this series originally, but it rocks! I can’t wait for book three :D.
  4. Traitor’s Blade – To be fair to me, this series only just started in the US ;-). I am now tempted to order the UK version as soon as it comes out though >.>.
  5. Dreamer’s Pool – This is a new series, but it is clear that I should have read Marillier a long time ago since I have lots of her previous books to catch up on now ;-). I’m so excited for the next book in the Blackthorn and Grim books though!

New and Shiny!

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge The Waking Engine by David Edison Mistwalker Saundra Mitchell Pennyroyal Academy by M. A. Larson Beastkeeper by Cat Hellisen

  1.  Cruel Beauty – I think this was literally the first book I read this year and it set a great tone :D. We had classes canceled for the first two days of the winter semester and there was too much now to even leave the apartment, so I just read Cruel Beauty instead! I’m pumped for Crimson Bound now, it’s tempting to have that be my first book of 2015, haha.
  2. The Waking Engine – This book was such a crazy trip but an awesome one. I’m waiting to see what Edison comes up with next!
  3. Mistwalker – Look at all of these stand alones I read! Mistwalker was so beautiful and atmospheric. I really need to check out what else Mitchell has written >.>.
  4. Pennyroyal Academy – I was so pleasantly surprised by this one and really loved Larson’s sharp writing, book two now please?
  5. Beastkeeper – Dude! So I just read this one on the drive back from Thanksgiving celebrations and it is AWESOME! I highly recommend you all put it on your 2015 TBR if the blurb sounds interesting. Isn’t it great when a blurb actually captures a book pretty well?? :D

So those are the authors that I discovered I loved this year. I don’t go out of my way to read new authors, but it is fun to look back and remember that sense of unknown before jumping into these ten :D. What authors did you discover this year??

  1. “Crazy trip” describes The Waking Engine so well haha. I read it in January, and I really enjoyed it. I read Cruel Beauty over the summer (fantastic on audio, by the way) and The Martian was HILARIOUS and fantastic. I’ve had my eye on Traitor’s Blade but I wasn’t excited to pick it up, but seeing you being excited makes me want to read it for sure!

    • HAHA RIGHT?!? I was just sitting on my couch reading it and not entirely sure of what I was reading, but knowing that I loved it in any case. He wrote a guest post for his tour here and it seriously made me cry since it was about being gay growing up *sobs*

Traitor’s Blade is SO MUCH FUN! There was one thing that bothered me, but otherwise it was excellent!

  2. I have only read one Marillier novel – Daughter of the Forest – and that was also this year! Seriously, her writing is gorgeous, and I fell in love with her book right away. I’ve been collecting her other books, and definitely plan on doing a serious binge.

    • Woot, that’s what I’m planning to do at this point too, hehe, and also see if any others are available as audiobooks since that was a whole lot of fun!

  3. Please please PLEASE pick up Wildwood dancing by Marillier! It is SO BEAUTIFUL!

I am reading The Martian now – I want to get it in prior to the new year. ;)

    • Will do :D I’m just going to see what my library can get of hers from me and read it all, haha!

I’m sure you’re already done with Martian since it is a pretty fast read once you get into it, but I hope you enjoyed it :D

  4. There are books on your list that really sound great! I need to have a closer look at “Among Thieves” and “Traitor’s Blade” and “Dreamer’s Pool” is definitely a must-read! I want to finish the Sevenwaters series before I start that though. Only 2 books to go! Heard a lot of good things about “The Martian” now so maybe that is worth a look as well :)

…actually on a closer look, the books ALL sound cool :D

  5. Hulick is awesome, the second book in the Kin series was a long time coming but well worth the wait. I also really enjoyed Traitor’s Blades, looking forward to the sequel next year.

Ooh Beastkeeper sounds great. Another one added to the TBR… :) Don’t you just love Tuesdays! :)

    • I’m kind of glad I only discovered the series as book two was coming out ;-) I’m hoping we don’t have to wait so long for three!

Tuesdays are the BEST! And so is Beastkeeper :D

  6. OOO! I am so excited for Beastkeeper!! Upping it on the TBR list!

  7. 100% agreed with Marillier. I can’t believe I haven’t read her stuff earlier. LOVED Dreamer’s Pool and I’ve picked up the author’s older stuff as well.

    • I can’t believe I had never even HEARD of her earlier, WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING WITH MY LIFE???? I’m going to be making a lot of library requests me thinks >.>

  8. I can’t believe I forgot dear, lovely Andy Weir! He should have been on my list, dang it. I haven’t read any others from your list but Cathrynne Valente is definitely pretty high on my TBR. a few of the others look intriguing as well. Half my list were SFF plus a couple more that were on the verge – it was obviously a good year for me to discover new SFF authors!

  12. I was afraid of Girl who Circumnavigated Fairyland, because I’m not a big Alice in Wonderland Wizard of Oz person and I’ve heard it compared to both.

I really want to read Among Thieves! I just have to get my hands on the first book.

So many good authors I have to read! What a great list! I’m glad you enjoyed Beastkeeper.

    • I can see a similar writing tone in that it is about middle grade themes but with elevated language that makes it enjoyable for adults, but I think there are a lot more dragons in the Fairyland books ;-)

  13. I recently read The Traitor’s Blade. It was very good and I also discovered Doug Hulick’s books. My daughter has forced a few of Marillier’s books on me. I like them okay but she loves them.

  15. I’m building a must-read-in-2015 list from my extremely bloated TBR list, and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland is already on it. I’ve owned it for at least two years now, maybe three. This year, I swear it. I also want to read more Juliet Marillier, including Dreamer’s Pool, and I’m glad to hear that Beastkeeper is good because I have an ARC and I need to read it!

    • Hehe, the only way I can stick to those lists is if I make a physical pile and put it on top of other books so that I must read those first ;-)

      READ BEASTKEEPER NOOOOOOOOOW!

  16. The only one of these I’ve read is Cruel Beauty! I’ve been seeing The Martian around a lot lately, so I think I need to go see what that’s all about.

  17. Fabulous list! I just read THE MARTIAN and had the same “why didn’t I read this sooner” reaction. Juliet Marillier is fabulous. Now that you’ve discovered her, I highly suggest starting the Sevenwaters books.

    • Hehe, isn’t it so great?? I seriously want him to write something else, but I don’t know what could possibly follow that!

Yey, I shall request Sevenwaters from the library asap :D

  18. I love having safe bets on the shelf, but I’ve also found I don’t have a ton of safe bets. Anyone can disappoint at any time. :( Which is why we must track down new pretties! Like these! Great list!

    • Haha, yeah, you never know when something is going to go wrong. I like to save books for just the right mood though, since I’ve found that that varies much more for me these days than it used to!

  19. I have not read Cruel Beauty, but I might because Crimson Bound is being released next year right? AND YES TO FAIRYLAND BOOKS. I loved the first one (titles are too long haha) but I also still need to read the rest of the series. I think the series is still ongoing.
Valerie recently posted…Top Ten Tuesday #34My Profile

    • Yup, though they are companions so you can read them in either order :D

Hehe, yes, Valente book 1, Valente book 2… ;-) I know that book four is kind of more like a companion because it’s a different MC I think and it is in the real world instead

  20. I hope to read Cruel Beauty soon! And I love Saundra Mitchell! Haven’t read this one though, but it sounds really good. Great list, Anya!

  21. Yay for Valente! Hope you enjoy her other books :) I’m starting to see The Martian crop up on a number of people’s lists this week; was a little on the fence before because I’ve seen some mixed reviews, but now it’s inching up the want-to-read pile ;)

Your description of Mistwalker has caught my attention will have to look it up on GoodReads ;) Great list!

  22. I can sure agree about Blackthorn, that was truly awesome. I snagged Among Thieves from the used book store the other day just on a whim. Hadn’t even seen any reviews on it. Glad at least one person liked it.

  23. I read Cruel Beauty early in the year too, although I can’t remember if it was the first book of 2014, but now I curious so I’m going to have to check hahaha. I really enjoyed it though and I’m excited for Crimson Bound!
