Top Ten NPR Top 100 SFF I Need to Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Check out the upcoming topics to start posting!

All right, so there is this NPR Top 100 Sci-Fi and Fantasy books list from last year, and I haven’t read so many good books! So I’m using my Top Ten Tuesday Freebie to make a list of the Top Ten books from the NPR list that I want to read in 2013!

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley The Princess Bride by William Goldman The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle Small Gods by Terry Pratchett The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde A Spell for Chamleon by Piers Anthony Hyperion by Dan Simmons Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut

  1. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley – I know, I know, I know! How did I miss this one?? I blame my high school teachers, clearly my education was lacking. I will fix this one of these days, I promise.
  2. The Princess Bride by William Goldman – The movie is one of my favorites from childhood, and apparently the book is even better!
  3. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein – I’ve read a fair amount of Heinlein, but not this one yet, and apparently it’s one of the best, so it’s on the list!
  4. The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle – This is the THE classic fantasy right? And unicorns are all happy, and I remember really liking the movie as a child, so I’m definitely wanting to no longer be ashamed to say I haven’t read the book!
  5. Small Gods by Terry Pratchett – Discworld! Another awesome collection that I haven’t had a chance to dive into yet, and I think Small Gods is a good place to start yes?
  6. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson – So it’s actually a goal just to read everything Brandon Sanderson has every written, but The Way of Kings is supposed to be freaking amazing and it is one of the last books of his, besides the Wheel of Time series, that I haven’t read.
  7. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde – As you may recall from previous posts, I have listened to random snippets of the Thursday Next books on road trips with my parents, but I have yet to actually read complete books. I think it’s about time ;-).
  8. A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony – So the cover looks a little random, I know, but I have this book because the nice lady at the used book store recommended it to me, so I might as well read it right?? Also, I hear it’s pretty darn awesome!
  9. Hyperion by Dan Simmons – I was recommended this book by a friend, then checked it out from the library, then didn’t get to it before I had to return it, and now still want to read it! So I’ll try again sometime next year I guess, haha.
  10. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut – Again, fail high school education…. I read lots of Shakespeare okay?? But yes, I will fix this and learn about time as a constant present thing and it will be mind-blowing :D.
Did you go through this list?? Anything you want to read from it now?

  1. What a great list. I have read about half of these books. I find it curious that Spell for Chameleon is on the list? I’ve read some Piers Anthony but not this one.

  2. Waah! The Princess Bride!

    • Haha, awesome right??

      • The Fairytale Nerd (@fairytalenerd) says:

I’m into fantasy (right now), and I’m actually looking for some really good fantasy books. Thanks for the list! :D

        • Awesome! I’m also getting much more into fantasy right now, I think because I just want to escape into fun new worlds when school stresses me out xD I heavily recommend anything by Brandon Sanderson for the fantasy lover!

  3. I’ve only read Brave New World but that’s a good choice!!

  4. Oh my gosh I’m ashamed to say The Princess Bride is one of my all-time favorite movies…but I’ve never read the book…After your list I’m gonna have to! :)

  5. Ooh! I haven’t read any of these either, except for The Princess Bride. TBD was really, really good. I had no idea the movie stuck so close to the source material.

  6. I love ‘The Princess Bride’, ‘The Eyre Affair’, ‘The Last Unicorn’..some of my favorite books there!

  7. I have printed up that very list and have it sitting on my desk. I’m determined that I’m going to make it all the way through it…someday. I own copies of Brave New World [I blame high school too!], Hyperion and The Last Unicorn though I haven’t gotten to any of them yet. So you’re not alone! And I really want to read The Princess Bride, the movie is so AWESOME.

    • Yey! I feel so much better about my book blogger status now xD I seriously was worried everyone would be horrified! We really should have a month that we set aside to read all these classics that we are supposed to have already read!

  8. Hannah @ Once Upon A Time says:

I tried to put together a top ten list earlier and failed horrendously at it. Too many books I want to get read RIGHT now. But Brave New World was on it and Way of Kings only isn’t because I’m slowly plodding my way through it already.

    • Haha, I know the feeling! I had to restrict myself to books that I absolutely HAD to read instead of just really wanted to xD Let me know how you like Way of Kings :D

  9. GREAT idea for a top ten list with some awesome titles. I actually haven’t read any of those either, can you believe that?
Top Ten Tuesday @ the Brunette Librarian

    • Haha, I can because I haven’t either :D Somehow those classics just get missed… we should have a classics read-a-long or something…. >.> <.< *scribbles notes*

  10. Great list! I definitely need to read the first 4. I think The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is one of few Heinleins I haven’t read.

    • Thanks :D While I’m sure there are lots of Heinlein books I haven’t read (man he wrote a lot of books!), it’s definitely one of the few really well known books I haven’t read xD

  11. Great idea for a list Anya and you made some really nice choices to feature on your list too! The Last Unicorn has been on my reading list since like…forever. I really hope to check it out soon! Also a fan of seeing ANY Brandon Sanderson book…I may have only discovered his work recently, but I plan to read everything the man has ever written ♥ The Discworld series is also on my ‘to-read’ list…and I really need to check out The Princess Bride as well >.< Thanks for sharing & I hope you get to read all these books soon :D

Here's my TTT this week: Top 10 Fictional Crushes of all time!

    Micheline @ Lunar Rainbows

    • Oo great idea as well! What do you think of doing a Discworld read-a-long to try and get some of those read? :D

Thanks for stopping by! Off to check out your crushes ;-)
