Top Ten SF/F Secondary Characters

Top Ten Tuesday

Thanks to the gals of The Broke and The Bookish for hosting this meme every week!

Let me preface all of this by admitting that I have an absolutely HORRIBLE memory for character names, let alone secondary characters, so this is mostly a list of “secondary characters I loved so much that I remember wanting more of them” and can only sometimes justify them getting an entire book to themselves ;-).

For a Hilarious Point of View

Hounded The Terror of the Southlands Cinder

  1. Oberon (Hounded) – Oberon is an Irish Wolfhound who has been bonded to the druid of the series, Atticus. This means Oberon can speak to Atticus mentally and is much more intelligent than your average dog. He is also HILARIOUS! I would love love love a novella or something narrated from Oberon’s point of view to hear all his comments on Atticus’ strange decision making ;-).
  2. The Gargoyle (Terror of the Southlands) – So our MC, Hilary, is a pirate but has a magical talking gargoyle instead of a parrot. In this second book, he starts making her dictate some of his memoirs and the glimpses we get are awesome. I really hope that they are released in full eventually!
  3. Iko (Cinder) – Does this surprise anyone???? I want to hear all of Iko’s snarky thoughts as Cinder and her friends are off adventuring, ha.

Pure Curiosity

The Goblin Emperor Seraphina Mistwalker Cruel Beauty

  1.  Pirate Cousin (Goblin Emperor) – There is very brief mention of a sea-faring female cousin on Maia’s goblin side of the family and I seriously need to hear of her adventures! I’m sure that I would completely adore Addison’s writing and world if it was focused on pirate adventures instead of court politics ;-).
  2. Abdo and Orma and and and (Seraphina) – Seriously, endless awesome stories to be told in this world! Abdo is my favorite and I’m really curious about how his upbringing differed so much from Seraphina’s. I also would love to get into the head of Seraphina’s stoic uncle Orma since there is a lot going on there too I’m sure, ha. Just never let this series end please?
  3. Grey Man (Mistwalker) – The Grey Man lives in the lighthouse and controls the fog for this small lobster-fishing village. We find out some of his life and how he became what he is along with his view of things as they are happening, but I want a historical fantasy focused on his past >.>.
  4. Ignifex (Cruel Beauty) – What can I say without spoilers?? I just want to read more in this world and how it came to be in the condition it is… if you’ve read it, you understand!

For the Feels

The Lies of Locke Lamora Ruin and Rising Dark Triumph

  1. Jean (Lies of Locke Lamora) – Jean barely counts as a secondary character anymore, but technically I think Locke is still the main character and it would be awesome to get in Jean’s head :D. Also I’m hoping for lots more flashbacks to find out more about all the other Gentleman Bastards in the next book dammit!
  2. Sturmhond (Ruin and Rising) – Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh! That is all >.>. But seriously, his PoV for the last two books would be epic, wouldn’t it??
  3. Beast (Dark Triumph) – *sniffles* This is my favorite of the couples just saying. Being in Beast’s head throughout Dark Triumph would be both awesome and heart-wrenching me thinks. There should be a spin-off trilogy with all the guys’ PoV, haha!

Man, it’s hard to talk about secondary characters without spoilers sometimes! And I did have to look up the spelling on a couple of names, but hopefully I got everyone right (this is a problem when listening to audiobooks D:). I absolutely love secondary characters when they are done well, so any recommendation for stories with awesome secondary characters are completely welcome, who have I missed???

  1. HECK YES to a Seraphina reread. That’s definitely happening at some point this year.

  2. Iko!! Gah I love her! I haven’t read the other books – except I did read Shadow & Bone, but I don’t recognize that character’s name… Should I? Did I miss him? I sometimes just suck at names though, especially when I can’t pronounce them (and I couldn’t pronounce much in that book!).

  3. I also picked Ignifex because I think a story from his point of view would be awesome. I agree, I’m curious about how the world came to be.

  4. Well, I’ve only read 2 books of the ones you’ve featured but I agree that a book from Iko’s perspective AND a book from The Gargoyle would be awesome! I would definitely read both of those – it would be hilarious and fun! Most of the rest of these are on my tbr shelf so I’m sure once I catch up I’d agree with the rest of your picks here LOL

    • Have you had a chance to read the second book in the Pirate League series yet?? I kind of want to go back and read the beginning of his memoirs that was in there since it didn’t show up well on my e-copy D:

  5. SO MUCH AWESOME. I’d love to see Oberon, Iko, and Beast. And Jean! We kind of got his POV in Red Seas but I’d never say no to more :)

  6. Ivan Vorpatril

“Do you think of yourself as an innocent bystander?”
“God knows I try to be,” sighed Ivan.

“Ivan, one of these days somebody is going to pull out a weapon and plug you, and you’re going to die in bewilderment, crying, “What did I say? What did I say?”
“What did I say?” asked Ivan indignantly.

And he’s already got his own book: Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance

  7. I’m only familiar with Iko here, and I don’t really care to read her point of view; I wasn’t that enamoured with any of the characters in that book.

I really must read some of the other books on your list; a few of them are already in my TBR pile.

  8. The only book I’ve read from your list is Cinder, and yes I would LOVE to hear Iko’s thoughts, but wow I need to read Seraphina and, is Mistwalker any good? It sounds like it is! I mean the cover is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing your list Anya!

    • I really loved Mistwalker since it is very atmospheric and plays on the Grey Man tales from fishing villages and places, plus it’s a standalone!

  9. Ashley Christy says:

I love the way you think! Iko is hilarious, Sturmhond was my favorite part of the whole series, I ADORE Jean Tannen (but would gladly accept a whole series about Sabetha, as well), and Beast was the best!

    • I feel so bad for not being a fan of Sabetha yet, I think that there was just such a lead up to her appearance that she couldn’t live up to it in my brain no matter what. I’m excited to see what happens with them though!

      • Ashley Christy says:

Don’t feel bad! I just really appreciate her unwillingness to take any of Locke’s shit. Lynch writes women so well, in my opinion. I just wish he would write MORE of them.

        • Definitely more is needed! It’s funny you say that about her, since a lot of fans speculate she came about through Lynch’s divorce processing. I’m very curious to see where the next book takes things! *grabby hands*

  10. OOOOOOOH Oberon would be FAN-TAS-TIC! How could I’ve forgotten him?! I love his input in all situations! Truly, bacon would make the world a better place…lol!

Still need to read Seraphina! Though I found the original HC at Half Priced Books I find I love the colors of the new one! I’ve become such a cover snob since blogging! LOL!

Seeing lots of Iko and couldn’t agree more! Really need help sometimes when it comes to this post! I forget about sooo many characters!

And Ignifex would’ve been pretty awesome too!

    Great picks!

    Here’s my Tuesday Post

    • Bacon makes everything better! I just was listening to his take on Atticus needing to move and I loved his opinion that as long as there were sausages, he was happy, haha.

I have to admit that I love my original hardcover of Seraphina, I like purple, but I just feel like the original colors fit the story better ya know? I’m glad that Shadow Scale matches both well though, so that I don’t have a mismatching set when it comes out!

Hehe, I feel like that with all TTT topics too, I want to have a Wednesday post adding to the topic after seeing everyone else’s ;-)

  11. I loved Iko! I can’t believe I forgot her on my list!

Sturmhond was my favorite character from that series! He’d make a great protagonist. I picked Darkling though because I thought he had more potential for a good story, but it was close.
Molly Mortensen recently posted…Top Ten Characters I Wish Would Get Their OWN BookMy Profile

    • So much love! It was awesome that she got to do more in Cress ;-)

Learning more about The Darkling’s past would be interesting, though I can see an awesome adventure book about Sturmhond haha

  12. Jean from the Gentleman Bastards series made my list as well. He’s a pretty major player in the books but I think he is still overshadowed by Locke. Iko almost made my list (a novella perhaps?) and your idea for a book from Oberon’s perspective is brilliant. He’s one of my favorite things about that series! I am also way on board with anything and everything in regards to Seraphina – more from these characters please!

    • Locke definitely seems to be the main focus still and just hearing Jean’s thoughts on all of his shenanigans would be hilarious :D

  13. I’d love to read book from the other characters of The Gentleman Bastards series! They’re all such interesting characters & personalities :)

  14. There was a pirate cousin in Goblin Emperor wasn’t there? Ya, I would read that. Or anything else in that world to be honest (short of a true sequel because I think that story has been completed to my satisfaction).
Nathan (@reviewbarn) recently posted…Fantasy Review: Elric of Melniboné by Michael MoorcockMy Profile

    • Yes! I distinctly remember shaking the book to make more details magically appear hehe. I would read a lot in that world too, I loved the goblins overall :D

  15. Ha! I knew I would start recognizing secondary characters who needed books once I read others’ lists! (I completely failed at remembering them on my own.) I remember being very interested about the story of Orma and that one other dragon lady in Seraphina (perhaps more so than the MC). Great list!

  17. I know you haven’t read Maria Snyder’s Study series yet, but I’d LOVE to read a book entirely on Yelena’s love interest Valek. :D I’d love to know what his life was like leading up to the events of Poison Study. The little that’s come out during the Study series hints at lots of danger, cunning, sacrifice, and family heartache. And, yes, I confess… the feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels! <3
