Top Ten SF/F Series I Want To Start

Top Ten Tuesday

Thanks to the gals of The Broke and The Bookish for hosting this meme every week!

What is up with Top Ten Tuesday topics that force me to own up to all the books I meant to have read a long time ago? ;-) This is going to be another list where you will need to refrain from gasping too much because you might hyperventilate once you see the series that not only have I not read yet, but I haven’t even start despite the best of intentions!

I’m Waiting Until It’s Finished?

The Burning Sky A Natural History of Dragons Falling Kingdoms The Golden City The Archived

Full disclosure: I don’t actually care about waiting until a series is complete to read it and actually like being caught up and excitedly reading the next book as soon as it comes out >.> Hence the question mark ;-).

  1. The Burning Sky – When everyone loved the sequel even more than the first book, I knew that I needed to get serious about starting this series. I went out and bought the first two book so I have lovely hardcovers on my shelf to encourage me ;-). I think that I’ll make this my next Audible book though since I’m really excited to read it after reading everyone’s glowing reviews! Update: I downloaded and started the audiobook yesterday :D
  2. A Natural History of Dragons – I got the first book as a gift when it first came out and I still haven’t read it D: I even bought the second as soon as IT came out…. I feel like I feature this on every list of book shame, haha. I’m determined though.
  3. Falling Kingdoms – Again, I bought the book as soon as it came out and have since bought the second. Anyone listen to the audio version of this? This is clearly my new strategy for fitting in older books ;-).
  4. The Golden City – I’m so excited for this series since it sounds like refreshingly new fantasy ideas! I have more hope for starting this soon since it isn’t too long so I should be able to fit it in on a driving trip during the holidays.
  5. The Archived – Just reread the above statements about being excited for book one and two ;-). I’m excited to see on Goodreads that book three is at least tentatively planned since I heard things were up in the air for a while. I’ve done my part for supporting the series though since I own the first two!

Missed the Boat

The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann The Cloud Roads Incarnate Poison Study Eon

  1.  The Unwanteds – I absolutely love McMann’s Visions trilogy so I know that I want to read her middle grade fantasy series because DUH, but I just didn’t start it when it was coming out, so it now takes more motivation to hop in at this point.
  2. The Cloud Roads – I remember hearing about this when I first start blogging a looong time ago and buying it because of a blogger’s review :D. However, since then the whole series has come out and I don’t know where the time went!
  3. Incarnate – When the final book for this trilogy came out, I was so excited to join in the read-a-long and finally find out why everyone loves this series so much (also dragons!), but then I got busy and couldn’t fit it in, etc, etc. I also just don’t do well binging on series, so once a series is complete, I feel like I have a harder time actually getting to them because I feel overwhelmed D:.
  4. Poison Study – I’ve already read Snyder’s Healer series and wasn’t in love with them, but I hear this series is her best, so I’m definitely going to give it a shot… eventually >.>.
  5. Eon – This series (duology?) sounds AWESOME! Dragons and diverse characters! And I own it already because I heard after it was published how awesome it was! It’s just so heavy to lift off the shelf ;-).

And we can once again see that I’m still in the mood for fantasy because the series I’m eyeing are apparently all fantasy of one kind or another woot! All right, so if you could pick only ONE of these for me to start before the end of the year, which would it be? Which series are you hoping to start soon?

  1. I adored the first two books in the Poison Study series but then I got busy and didn’t finish it. I agree, the longer you have to wait between books, the harder it is to finish:-)

  2. Hah, I own a few of those and haven’t read them either. I did read Poison Study, but not the last two. I have Eon and Eona. I LOVED Jodi Meadow’s series, but I haven’t read the Infinite. Probably because I don’t want that series to end.

Golden City/Seat of Magic are on my list, too.
Leeanna @ recently posted…Book Review: Shadowboxer by Tricia SullivanMy Profile

    • Hehe, I’m glad I’m not the only one at least then ;-) It’s great to hear you loved Meadow’s trilogy, I want to love her fantasy writing so much because the premise sounds awesome!

  3. Poison study is a must!! If you liked the Healer series then you’ll love Yelena and the cast of characters in the study series. I liked A Natural History of Dragons, too!
Danya @ Fine Print recently posted…Review: Rosemary and Rue Seanan McGuireMy Profile

    • Sounds good! I definitely enjoyed the Healer books, they had a great world and magic and cast of characters :D I think I’ll make a stack of the books from this discussion that I have to try hard to get to since I already own them!

  4. The Poison Study series is my favorite of Maria V. Snyder’s books. And Shadow Study is coming out soon, too.

    • Awesome! I love it when a series is on going if I can catch up in time for the next book and squee with everyone else :D

  5. Great picks, I have read the Poison Study series (Books 1-3 at least) and enjoyed them. I just found out that there are short stories in between all the books that I missed. I may have to reread with those :/
Stephanie recently posted…Building the Book Pile #111My Profile

    • Awesome to know! Oh man, short stories between books conflict me so much since I don’t particularly like to read shorts, but if they are important for the stories… sigh

  6. I’ve seen A Natural History of Dragons on a few people’s lists. It’s on mine. There’s nothing wrong with waiting until a series is finished before starting it. That can be less stressful.

    • Hehe, so true! Though since I like to take a break between books of series no matter what, reading as they come out works well for me

  7. The Sherry Thomas one is on my list.

    • The narration is a little odd (older British sounding guy?) but so far I’ve enjoyed listening to The Burning Sky so you should certainly check it out, but maybe listen to a sample first?

  8. Great picks. There are quite a few of these series that I really want to read myself – The Burning Sky, The Archived and Incarnate especially, they look so good. I hope you can get to some of these soon :) TTT.

    • I’m so happy that I’ve already had the chance to start on Burning Sky! I feel like I make these lists and then never actually act on them, haha

    ok bye.

For reals, The Burning Sky, Natural History of Dragons (so sounds like a non-fiction book), and the Archived have been on my TBR for forever. I need to get to them soon!
Valerie recently posted…Top Ten Tuesday #29My Profile

    • HAHA I count each of those as a vote so I think we have a winner ;-)

I’ve been able to fight off any book buying impulses lately so maybe I’ll devote December to reading older books or something, that could be fun!

  10. Archived made my list as well. I forgot about Falling Kingdoms, but it’s definitely one I want to read, too. :D Great list Anya! My TTT
Liesel Hill recently posted…Top Ten Tuesday: New Series I Want to StartMy Profile

    • These lists always do the same to me, I forget about books I definitely wanted to include as soon as it’s published ;-)

  11. I read the first Martha Wells and loved it, I really need to get back to the next few. I’ve added The Elemental Trilogy and The Golden City to my TBR list now, not like it was already long enough… :) Thanks for the suggestions!
Joel @ The Library Rat recently posted…Top Ten Tuesday: Top New Series I Want To StartMy Profile

    • There was also a short story/novella collection just released for the Wells books I think, they look so pretty!

I hope you get a chance to read those two then, I’m really enjoying The Burning Sky already :D

  12. Oh I LOVE The Falling Kingdoms series! So incredible! And ooh yes, Poison Study is definitely my favorite series from Maria. The Healer series was good, but I guess it wasn’t a fave amongst everyone. The Study series was better but I pretty much love everything Maria writes! The series is even continuing now, so after Fire Study, there’ll be more!

    Here’s my Tuesday Post

    • Yey great to hear about the Falling Kingdoms! I’m really pumped for those books mostly because the cover for book one is SO PRETTY!

  13. I’ve got Incarnate in my TBR pile, but I’ve seen such awful reviews that, if I do read it, it will probably be just to see how bad it is!

    The Archived sounds intriguing, though…
La Coccinelle recently posted…Top Ten Tuesday – Top New Series I Want To StartMy Profile

    • Oh really?? Interesting, I’ve seen some people who absolutely LOVE that series (including a good buddy whose taste I generally trust, haha) but I could see there being certain elements that drive some people nuts and don’t bother others perhaps?

  14. I am a series junkie, particularly fantasy and I haven’t heard of many of these – For Shame! I have had the Lady Trent series on my TBR for a while and am particularly intrigued by The Golden City.
Stephanie recently posted…My Hero(ines): The Fictional Women I Most Look Up ToMy Profile

    • Well now you have lots of awesome series to catch up on with me :D The Golden City apparently has selkies and is set in a really intriguing world, so exciting!

  15. Oh, I need to dig out POISON STUDY and ARCHIVED. I’ve heard excellent things but haven’t yet gotten around to either one.
Becky recently posted…Top Ten Tuesday: Series I’d Like to StartMy Profile

    • Hehe, I hear ya! And I feel like I might have to dig as well, I’m not quite sure where some of my copies are D:

  16. I love The Archived! Each book wraps up at the end so there are no cliffhangers. It might be a while before we get book 3.

I LOVE Poison Study! It’s one of my favorite books of all time! I really enjoyed the series and I’m so excited that she has been contracted to write three more books in that series!
Jessie H. recently posted…Stacking the Shelves: October 11, 2014My Profile

    • Oo that’s so great to know about The Archived books, I hate cliffhangers soooo much! Yeah, I’ve heard that the third book is up in the air as far as publishing, sigh, I feel the need to buy more copies >.>

Awesome to hear more love for Poison Study! So many people love it, I’ll definitely have to check it out :D

  17. Hahaha I totally agree with you – I love being caught up on series too. Anticipating the next book only makes it better… and that goes double for TV, I think.

Haven’t heard much about the books on your list, aside from the Marie Brennan one. Although I do recognise some covers. Hope they are as awesome as you expect!
Miriam @ Inky Realms recently posted…Top Ten Tuesday: Ten SFF Series I Want to ReadMy Profile

    • Agreed and great comparison with TV shows, there are just a couple that I keep up with, but the boy and I are sooooooo excited for them to start again!

  18. Poison Study is amazing. I agree, Touch of Power wasn’t as good but her first series is awesome. You need those characters in your life lol.

The Archived is awesome, too. I still haven’t read the sequel yet but I’m going to at some point. Schawb’s writing is beautiful.

Sadly I didn’t love Incarnate. I thought the pace was extremely slow and the love interest was way too perfect. I want to read The Burning Sky too.
Becca recently posted…End of the year surveyMy Profile

    • Yeah, it’s so good to know that just because I didn’t love Touch of Power, doesn’t mean Poison Study will disappoint ;-)

Hmm yeah that makes sense about Incarnate. I think I’ll have to give it a try since sometimes I can handle slower pacing and the premise of the world sounds so cool :D

  19. Yup ^^ I still need to read The Archived, Falling Kingdoms, Poison Study, Eon, The Golden City AND Incarnate too >.< Gah, sometimes thinking about ALL the books I desperately WANT to read but still haven't kinda bum me out. I wish we could just pause real life and read ALL THE BOOKS. I am happy that you're reading The Burning Sky though. I still need to read The Perilous Sea myself but your motivating me to do so soon hehe I hope you get to read all of these in the near future :) x
Micheline @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews recently posted…Review: Words of RadianceMy Profile

    • Yes, I super need a pause button D: I also somehow end up thinking that I can get so much reading done on a week vacation or something, but really I could only read about five since I can read a book a day if I’m really pushing it, so I could only start half of these series! That’s the nice part about audiobooks at least though, since it lets me get to older books in time I can’t otherwise read :D

  20. haha you’re right, a lot of the top tens lately have been about books that need to be read. I like to wait until a series is finished, but I usually have to read it now! Congrats on starting Burning Sky, that series looks good. Good luck getting to some of the others. I think I’d pick Eon for you. I’m hoping to read the Rune Blade trilogy myself.
Molly Mortensen recently posted…Tags, Tags (To Read Tag and Bookshelf Tag)My Profile

    • It’s kind of fun focusing on books that we want to read in various categories, but also a little stressful ;-)

Eon has multiple votes now so I’m thinking that will have to happen :D

  21. I’ve seen Martha Wells’ books around quite a bit but have yet to pick up one for myself…One of these days, lol. Great list! I need to get around to anythingb y Victoria Schwab too, but I think I’m more keen to check out her upcoming release than her previous titles (well, barring Vicious, lol) :3
Lianne @ recently posted…Meme: Top Ten TuesdaysMy Profile

    • Hehe I hear ya! I’m super intrigued by Schwab’s upcoming release, I haven’t really read the description in depth, because I’m so excited to go in completely blind ;-)

  22. Yes to Marie Brennan. Don’t actually know a lot of the others on the list, though I did read Falling Kingdom when it came out.
Nathan (@reviewbarn) recently posted…Fantasy Review: ‘The Fifth Elephant’ by Terry PratchettMy Profile

  23. Hmmm you are tricky, making me pick just one for you to start until the end of the year. I am tempted to say ‘The Burning Sky’ because I loved the plot and banter but I think I will go with ‘The Cloud Roads’. It’s one of the worlds with the most beautiful descriptions. Floating islands, weird plants and animals. And non-humanoid main characters. They fly, they have claws, they have matriarch society…. Refreshingly original.
Dragana recently posted…Which of These Fantasy Books Published in 2014 I Should Not Miss?My Profile

    • Darn it! If you had gone with Burning Sky then I would have already managed that ;-). Cloud Roads is a great choice by the sounds of it though because I love the idea of all of those things :D

  24. If it helps, you’re not the only one who (still) hasn’t started The Archived. I think I’m going to have to set aside a full weekend (probably after the LSAT) to sit down and go through Vicious and The Archived all at once. (Yes, I know. Still haven’t read Vicious either. But I can’t seem to get through anything even mildly deep/serious/long right now. I fail.)
Kel @ Booked til Tuesday recently posted…Top 10 New Series I Want To StartMy Profile

    • Whew, we can live in the fantasy exile area together ;-). Oo Vicious is definitely a serious one but so good! I get the impression that Archived is also a bit deep with the whole the daed still being accessible kind of thing

  25. I’m about 1/4 of the way through the third book of Maria Snyder’s Study series. To be honest, so far the two later books haven’t lived up to the first one, Poison Study. But I still recommend reading the whole thing, especially if you’re interested in reading Shadow Study when it comes out next year.

That’s the only one on your list that I’ve read. Haven’t heard of Falling Kingdoms, The Golden City, or Eon, but the titles and covers pique my interest. Will have to check those out. And I reeeeealllyyyy want to read The Burning Sky! The cover completely convinces me that I should. Are you going to review it for the site when you’re done, even though it’s not a new book?
Sara L. recently posted…Chronicling The Craft: 85,000 WordsMy Profile

    • Sounds good! I’ll be sure to try to keep going with the Study books especially if Shadow Study turns out great ;-)

Oh yes! I review all the books I read and especially like the chance to review the older titles since it leads to a different kind of discussion :)

  26. I hope you’re enjoying The Burning Sky – it seems like something you should like! I’ve been meaning to read A Natural History of Dragons and The Archived myself. I also missed the Incarnate boat haha. Eventually. I highly recommend you read Eon/Eona – one of the best series I read from the past few years. Poison Study (the first book, not the full series) is also really good. Hope you can get to many of these soon!
Amanda @ Late Nights with Good Books recently posted…Ready to Become a Fan of… Katherine LongshoreMy Profile

    • I am quite enjoying The Burning Sky audio! It isn’t perfect, but it’s much better in the second half :D

Awesome to hear about Eon/Eona, it’s that kind of statement that makes me so determined to read it!

  27. I recommend that you listen to the Poison Study series if you can. The narrator is wonderful.

  28. I really liked the Golden City! I need to get my hands on The Seat of Magic still, but it is a beautifully written book! Plus, there are selkies and sirens and it is magical!
Anne @ Lovely Literature recently posted…Series I’d like to consumeMy Profile

    • I don’t think I’ve even read anything with selkies, hence why I MUST read this freaking series! Gah, my awesome friend even gave it to me last year and I just can’t seem to fit it in D:
