Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I love my treadmill with all my might! I got so much more walking done this week since I didn’t have to drive five minutes to the gym, haha. I also got a lot of reading done since that’s what I do on the treadmill and it was great!

My Week

CalamityI powered through Calamity this week and absolutely loved it! Firefight didn’t completely click for me, so it was a relief to be back in love with the quirky humor and get lots of answers in this final book. Soooooooo good!

The Girl From EverywhereMy treadmill reading for the week was The Girl From Everywhere and wow what an awesome surprise! I really loved the time-travel and magic elements, plus of course sailing is the best. The writing though is so lovely and really took advantage of the beautiful settings. Definitely a recommended read!

The Book of PhoenixFinally my audiobook for the week has been The Book of Phoenix, which I honestly started on a whim and wow I’ve been blown away. I didn’t even notice that Patrick Rothfuss blurbed this one, but I can definitely see why! Such an original mashup of sci-fi and fantasy, starring an all African cast of characters and a lot of various African myths, mostly Nigerian. I’m also listening to the audiobook and was thrilled to discover it’s the same narrator as The Fifth Season and I loooooooove her! So yeah, new favorite right here :D.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Immortals Fridays with the Wizards Winter

I’m almost done with my February publication books, so this week I’m going to read The Immortals and Fridays with the Wizards and be all set for February :D. I’m also going to be starting the audio of Winter next because my dear Pabkins gave it to me to help subvert my book buying ban!

What are you reading this week?

  1. Sounds like a good week, Fridays with the Wizards sounds intriguing :)

  2. Can I ask a really REALLY stupid question? How do you read on the threadmill? I always get seasick on it, and I can’t read. If I could read on the treadmill, I would stay on it ALL DAY.

    • Haha, love you dear! As I said on Twitter, not stupid at all, everyone asks me that and apparently I have super powers because I’m the only one I know of that can do it. I blame reading in the car at an early age?

  3. I’m so glad you loved Calamity! I’m always a little nervous when it comes to series finales. My library finally ordered it, and I am of course first on the hold list, so I’m hoping to read it soon after it comes out. :D

I’m also excited for The Girl from Everywhere. I’ve been hearing great things about it. I read the prologue and first couple pages of the first chapter of Passenger and was too bored to continue, so I’m happy I have a different time travel novel to look forward to.

    • Yes, Calamity nails the finale, so good!

I didn’t hear great things about Passenger and just had that vibe from it that I wouldn’t like it, so never tried to get a review copy. Girl From Everywhere is definitely one to look forward to though!

  4. I applaud your exercise self-control! I’m been meaning to hit the gym this semester and I will…at some point. >.>

I’m glad The Girl from Everywhere worked out for you! It did have nice writing. And I can’t wait to see your thoughts on Winter!

    • Haha, getting a treadmill for my living room has seriously helped so much! My gym was only five minutes away, but even that much kept me from going when it was dark out etc.

  5. I felt the same way about Firefight, so I’m so glad Calamity was a great ending! I’m curious what you’ll think about Winter. Good job with all of your treadmill walking!

    • I’m about 1/4 into Winter so far and enjoying it. I thought Winter was black though and apparently she has white skin so completely wrong on that front?

  6. I love this!!! The Book of Phoenix looks SOOO. GOOD. I am so excited to get to that one. Ironically I just bought Binti from the same author (Nnedi Okorafor). I always get so excited when I find new books on your blog. Keep posting!

    • :D You are so sweet! I still need to read my copy of Binti, but I’m now even more excited because Book of Phoenix was amazing to the very end!!
