Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hey everyone! How are you doing? I’m pretty darn tired to be honest, probably because I’m writing this at 1am…. I’ve gotten a rather lot of stressful news related to grad school this week: I’m going to be teaching a C++ class this summer instead of co-instructing like I thought and a paper I had thought was really solid got harsh reviews and was demoted (i.e. it was accepted as a poster, so I have to completely rewrite it to change 8 pages to 2 pages and make a poster and it won’t actually count as anything on my resume). But, I’m still here, I’m reading great books, and the Kickstarter for Books on Dragonwings has hugely surpassed its goal so its on to the stretch goals!

My Week

BorderlineOh Borderline, how could I count the ways that I love you? This book has it all folks: a double amputee heroine with Borderline Personality Disorder, fae hiding behind all of Hollywood’s greatest artists, and a spooky mystery that needs solving. Seriously, I love Millie to the ends of the earth. I just want to hug her and never let go and hope she doesn’t punch me. Just go read this book okay??

All the Birds in the SkyWow, I see what all the hype around All the Birds in the Sky is about now! I’m listening to the audiobook and it is FANTASTIC! It is so strange and unlike anything I’ve read before, but it is marvelous. It reminds me a lot of Station Eleven in that there are clear fantasy and sci-fi elements but they are quite subtle and delightful. Well, not that subtle when the main characters can talk to animals and have a 2-second time machine, but they are really just kids in school trying to fit in! Anyway, simply marvelous and the narration is excellent.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Hmmmm what to read next? I’m being pulled in a lot of directions, but I’m feeling some weird reads, so here is what I’m thinking for next week:

Dissension The Paper Menagerie

Happy Reading!

  1. Oh wow! Teaching a class alone does sound a little stressful, but I’m sure you’ll do just fine. (I started “teaching” for a pro bono project last week and my lesson plan for the first night was shot because I and the other guy at this location accidentally picked the same one. I had to wing it. :P) And that’s disappointing about the paper. :( At least a good learning experience, I hope? Take it easy this week and no stress!

  2. I’ve read nothing but praise so far for Borderline! Can’t wait to read your review of it, Anya. :)
