Updates from the Lair 06/01/13

Updates from the Lair
Happy June everyone! Summer is officially here right? Or do we technically have to wait longer? I’m not sure and I don’t care because it’s getting warm and thunder stormy here and that’s what counts in my book ;-). I had my first “typical” week of the summer with no special appointments or traveling all over the place and am finally starting to get into my routine. Since I’m a grad student, I sort of have the summer off, but really I just need to focus on my research and try to get ahead before classes in the fall suck all my time up again. I don’t have anything hard scheduled most of the week, so I just have to figure out how to organize my day myself. OMG so scary D: . I think I’m figuring things out though and getting a fair amount done before the boyfriend gets home from work. I need to increase my willpower to get up earlier though, hehe. How’s the beginning of summer going for you? Any big changes with the season in your life?

My Week

Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg

I bought Sheryl Sandberg’s book a month or two ago since I have seen her speak a couple of times and love her message. I kept putting off reading Lean In since I felt I had so much else I should read, but I finally decided to go for it this week and I read it in about two days…. It’s pretty short and has great stories, facts, and advice for women that want to kick butt in any aspect of their lives. Lean In was especially useful for me to read since I’m hoping to go far in academics once I finish my degree and it was good to know what I will face and have strategies to deal with it.

Outcast by Adrienne Kress

I also read Outcast by Adrienne Kress since I grabbed it on NetGalley last week and it was recently published. I was excited basically because of the cover, but ending up being a bit disappointed. It was much too high school romance/drama for me and not enough hunting angels and solving mysteries. Anyone else had the chance to read it?

Some Quiet Place

I also was lucky enough to get Some Quiet Place from NetGalley and am currently reading it. Apparently it’s being archived today even though it’s not published until July? Can someone explain this to me please?? D: Anyway, I haven’t gotten into it yet since it’s a bit all over the place. The scenes are very short and nothing much has happened yet. I’m assuming I’m still in the setup, since the premise and what has been revealed so far are super interesting.

Tuesdays at the Castle

Finally, I’m currently also absolutely adoring Tuesdays at the Castle. Seriously, there is a sentient castle that finds ways to express it’s opinion by changing around where the rooms are, making new rooms and directing people where it wants by changing the hallways they are in. There is also a spunky young princess who the castle likes very much, a devious plot, and some adventuring to do! I always had this bias against middle grade because I thought it would be too simplistic to entertain me, but I’m heavily entertained so color me silly :D.

  1. Another good looking week here and yeah! to it finally starting to look like Summer!! I’m sorry Outcast was a bit of a letdown :( I am actually also reading Some Quiet Place too right now!! It is a bit odd isn’t it, though really interesting – I’m hoping when everything starts to go down it blows our minds HAHA I’m excited to compare notes :D

    • Some Quiet Place is so odd, hehe, but I did end up liking the revelations about what has been going on. Have you finished yet? :D

  2. Hannah @ Once Upon A Time says:

I always say June – August is Summer, September – November is Autumn, December – February Winter, and March – May is Spring. Of course, I’m wrong. But it works for me! :D

  3. Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads says:

I’m definitely excited for summer! There have been some pretty big changes in my life this past month, so that helps too! :) I hope you get everything done that you want to!

    • That’s always the goal that doesn’t happen right ;-) I accept that I won’t get all my reading goals done though, oh well!

  4. Sumer technically begins at the solstice, which this year is June 21. Little bit more of spring to go!

Hope this month is a good reading month for you!

    • Hehe, I always thought that was strange to declare the beginning of the season on the longest day ;-)

  5. Some quiet place has a cool cover!
