Updates from the Lair 10/11/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

What a week! Just a minor event ;-). The wedding is done, I ended up having to go to a funeral on Saturday unfortunately since my grandmother passed away last weekend, but now we’re just spending time with family and that’s nice. I’ve gotten a lot of reading done on the drive, so that’s been fun since I haven’t had time to finish a book in weeks!

My Week

The Tournament at GorlanI read The Tournament at Gorlan all day Sunday! It didn’t appeal to me as much as I’d hoped for a few reasons, but it was certainly a fast and easy read. I get annoyed when fantasy has literally no major female characters and fails the Bechdel test quite horribly. There also wasn’t any magic soooooo, just a fun adventure ;-).

The Impostor QueenThe Impostor Queen kept me company on the long drive to Minnesota and it was a great road trip book! It has very cool magic and a bisexual main character :D. I’m thinking that a lot of YA fantasy fans are going to go bonkers over this series since it has a great balance of world-building, character development and a very sweet romance. It comes out in January so get your pre-orders placed!

Last Song Before Night I’ve also been reading Last Song Before Night! It’s been a slow start so I’m only 150 pages in, but I’m liking the groundwork that has been laid. I love the mix of characters and the magic based on poetry. I’m hoping that it picks up soon since it seems like the adventure is about to start ;-).

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Owl and the City of Angels The Peddler's Road The Beast of Cretacea Soundless Our Lady of the Ice

These are the combination of books I brought with me on the trip and that I have on my eReader. I’m not sure what I’ll be in the mood for on the drive back, what do you recommend?

Happy Reading!

  2. Sounds like you had a bittersweet whirlwind of a week, Anya. I’m sorry about your grandmother’s passing, and I know the feeling all too well. *hugs* But I’m also happy to hear your wedding went well, too. Any plans for a honeymoon?

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on Last Song Before Night. As for recommendations from your list… I haven’t read either yet, but I’ve got Soundless and Our Lady of the Ice on my TBR list. ;)

    • Definitely bittersweet unfortunately, thanks <3

We're thinking of doing a honey moon in the spring up north at a cabin so we can just really relax.

  3. Sorry to hear about your grandmother, my prayers are with your family.
