Updates from the Lair 10/25/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

What a week! I had pretty darn bad luck the whole week between locking myself out of the house, things with research getting messed up and then on Friday my brand new car got rear-ended in a three car + 1 bus pileup! The car isn’t hurt too bad, just need to replace the bumper and I was the one in front so there’s no question of fault for me, but wow, what a horrible end the week huh? Here’s to next week going better ;-).

My Week

The Peddler's RoadI’m about halfway through The Peddler’s Road and it is a whole lot of fun! I love the mix of the legend of the Pied Piper and fresh aspects of fantasy all mixed with cameos of lots of other fairytales ;-). Also get a look at that cover, I’m so excited to have a hardback on my shelf just to look at it :D.

SagaI’ve finally started my journey into comic books! I got Saga from the library this week and decided to read it Friday evening to avoid thinking about the car accident. I really should have gotten more volumes from the library since I finished volume one so quickly, lesson learned ;-).

Of Sorrow and SuchI’ve also gotten started on the collection of novellas that I have from Tor.com to review and wow, Of Sorrow and Such is so freaking amazing. I loved every minute that I spent reading it and can’t recommend it enough to fans of witches. So much awesome!!!

SoundlessI just finished reading Soundless as well and have to admit that I ended up disappointed. I’m not happy with how deafness was portrayed, there wasn’t very much influence of Chinese culture, there wasn’t much magic, and everything just ended up feeling rather blah. It’s just a basic romantic adventure really, which wasn’t what I signed up for!

A Crucible of SoulsFinally my current audiobook is A Crucible of Souls and I’m really enjoying it. It’s got the fun magic school aspect while also having a really cool rule-based magic system and strong characters. That cover really doesn’t do the fantasy aspects justice, but trust me, magic school :D.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Legacy of Kings Wake of Vultures Radiance

I’ve actually already read the first chapter of Radiance and can’t wait to actually start it because that first chapter was amazing! I’ll also be trying out Legacy of Kings on e-book this week and am curious how I’ll like it given the different opinions I’ve heard. Finally, I think my next audiobook is going to be Wake of Vultures since I’m so so excited to read that one and just got the audio :D. What are you excited to read?

Happy Reading!

  4. Wow, rough week. I’m glad you weren’t hurt in the accident. That’s disappointing about Soundless, I had high hopes for it.

  5. Sorry about your week :-/ Car accidents are always a hassle, even if you’re not at fault. I really want to read Saga though! I’ve also never read comic books, but that one keeps popping up on my radar and looks like the kind of story I’d like, making me want to try it.

  6. I’m sorry to hear about your horrible week. I hope you didn’t hurt your back in the accident. That’s too bad about soundless, it was getting such hype too. I hope your next week is better. (Maybe a hidden key. I’m good at that too.)

    • My back mercifully made it through fine since my car has nicely padded seats! We have found a place to stash a key that doesn’t put the house too much at risk ;-)
