Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hey loves! Sorry, completely spaced about this yesterday, but I knew you’d forgive me ;-). Exciting news this week: I got a treadmill! I now have a treadmill sitting in my living room ready for me to walk on it whenever I feel inspired and I’ve already gotten the full 10k steps for the last three days :D. I’ve also been reading some fun books while walking, as you do!

My Week

WinterwoodI just finished Winterwood and oh my god I loved it so much! I was worried that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations, but I should have known that combining swashbuckling, Fae magic, and a cross-dressing kick ass heroine could’t really go wrong. There is definitely a sexy romance, but it isn’t the main focus and it worked well. I’m sooooo excited for the next book and you all need to pre-order this one!

The Ballad of Black TomI also just read The Ballad of Black Tom novella, and my feelings for it are complicated though I enjoyed it. There is a lot of discussion of racism as you would see in 1920 and that was difficult to read, but the fantasy elements are Lovecraftian and awesome. Definitely worth a read.

Revenge and the WildI read the first few chapters of Revenge and the Wild and I don’t think it’s going to work for me so I’ve set it aside. It just felt very silly with elves, dwarves and ogres popping up right away and a magical dome. Oh and the love interest shows up with his alluring smile in the first chapter…. Does it get better?

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Calamity The Girl From Everywhere The Book of Phoenix

Sometimes, I just get overwhelmed with how privileged I am being a book blogger, and when a bound manuscript of Calamity showed up in the mail, it was definitely one of those times. I keep waiting to turn to a page where it says “haha, just kidding!” and the rest are blank >.>. So yeah, I’ll be reading that this week, obviously. I also just started The Girl From Everywhere and am intrigued by the magic and such, so I think I’ll stick with it as long as it doesn’t get too slow ;-). Finally, my next audiobook is going to be The Book of Phoenix assuming I finish Their Fractured Light this week!

Happy Reading!

  1. So excited to see how much you liked Winterwood as it looks really fun and is definitely one I’m looking forward to! It’s a relief to see that it lived up to it’s fantastic looking premise!

  2. Definitely jealous of Calamity, although I’m behind on the series and still need to read Firefight. Brandon Sanderson is such a great writer.

    • I know the feeling ;-). Yes, he’s marvelous and though this trilogy is a bit different than his others, I liked it a lot!
