Updates from the Lair 11/8/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Greetings from sickland! This week was rather annoying since hubby and I caught a cold and were therefore sick all week. Monday and Friday were pretty much wasted since those were the days my sinuses decided to protest against me to the point of headache…. I ended up reading a lot of graphic novels given how I was feeling ;-).

My Week

Ms. MarvelI got the first volume of Ms. Marvel from the library and read that this week. I’m excited for this reboot and really enjoying it even though I don’t normally like superhero stories. Kamala is awesome and I wish I could be her friend! The art is also really lovely and I appreciate that they don’t shy away from Kamala being Muslim.

Saga Volume 4I also read all the volumes of Saga that I could get my hands on! My library didn’t have volume five on the shelf, so I’m waiting for that, but I’ve read through four now! This is such a strange series, but addicting ;-).

Raining EmbersI read the first half of Raining Embers this week and ended up deciding it isn’t for me. The ideas for the magic and world are cool, but the writing and characters were just rather blah so I wasn’t pulled in. It’s also strange to me when books skip over interesting events (for example, magic training!) and just mention them after the fact. I’m like ummmmm, I would have liked to experience that ya know?

RadiantI’m also about halfway through Radiant and quite enjoying it! I had seen this series around a lot, so I’m glad to have the chance to finally find out what it’s all about. It is definitely not what I was expecting, but cool!

Grave WitchThis was just the week for reading first books apparently! I binge-read Grave Witch on Sunday when I wasn’t feeling well and need to write that review still. I can definitely see the appeal of this urban fantasy series and am looking forward to reading the rest in preparation for the fourth book!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Planetfall Bands of Mourning The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps The Builders

I got sidetracked by Radiant last week, so this week I’ll definitely be reading Planetfall! I also just got a copy of Bands of Mourning, so that has to happen, is anyone surprised?? ;-) I also want to keep working through the Tor.com novellas that I have so I think I’ll be trying The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps and The Builders this week! What do you recommend?

Happy Reading!

  2. I have just gotten over the worst cough I’ve ever had and I’m so glad that is behind me. When I was sick, though, I got to catch up on a lot of reading so there are some plus sides, haha (although a headache probably doesn’t help). Hope you get well soon!

    • Coughs are so annoying! I keep getting surprised by my cough slipping back in as I progress on the long tail of recovery, sigh

  3. That’s so exciting that you’re going to read Bands of Mourning this week! I would say that I’m really excited to read that one, but I still have only read The Final Empire. I have plans to read more of the series in December, though. :) Happy reading!

    • Yey, I hope that you get all caught up on the Mistborn books this December, definitely a good way to spend the month ;-)

  4. Hope you’re both feeling better! Colds are zero fun.

I got the first two volumes of Ms. Marvel from the library a while back and thought they were okay. The message/focus of the second and the way they approached it was a bit much for me, but the art is nice. :) I’ve only read a small sample of Saga but it definitely looks strange.
