Updates from the Lair 12/13/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I’m done with Christmas shopping!!!! Well, almost, but the last thing is more a crafty thing, so it’s not as stressful and I already know what I’m going to do >.>. I haven’t wrapped anything yet of course since it’s still coming from Amazon, but I feel accomplished given my thoughts last week, haha! All the reading again this week since we were road tripping :D. I have been writing reviews like mad and still need to write about five after this post….

My Week

Dragon Hunters Woot, all the fun! I’m about halfway through Dragon Hunters and really enjoying it. I love Turner’s style of presenting a number of points of view and then slowly interweaving them for a final big event. Plus, dragons, even though they are eating people, ha.

Tide of ShadowsI also am at pretty much exactly 50% of Tide of Shadows and Other Stories! This is a cool anthology since it is something different, though I’m wishing there were more actual sf/f elements in the first two stories. We’ll see how story three goes!

Inherit the StarsI tried the first two chapters of Inherit the Stars before deciding it wasn’t for me. The MC just annoyed the crap out of me and I wasn’t intrigued by the mashup of royalty and sci-fi since it just didn’t really seem to work. I also heard that it doesn’t get better so I wasn’t really inspired to force myself through. :(

Witches of LychfordAs you will notice shortly, I was in the mood to read all the novellas this week. To start with: Witches of Lychford. It was a bit odd since the premise is a super store coming in that is actually somehow evil. But the main characters are a great mix of women that are strong in their own ways and the story was satisfying in the end.

TruthwitchI definitely see why there is so much love for Truthwitch! The magic is super cool and a pair of girls as friends is the main focus, which is delightfully refreshing. I has some quibbles, but I’m definitely on board the hype train for this one and excited for book two along with all of you ;-).

Magic StarsMagic Stars is available now so go get it! It is definitely a must read novella for fans of the series. First off, it’s Julie and Derek, which rocks. But also there are some huge really important reveals, so go get it.

The Drowning EyesYou know when you’re really excited for a story and then it is indeed everything you hoped for? Well, The Drowning Eyes was just that! Cool weather magic, a complete cast of characters of color saving the day, and kick ass women! Why isn’t this a series?????

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Fire Touched Dreamwielder

So I got Fire Touched this week, so obviously I have to start that immediately because no other book will do! I also should be receiving Dreamwielder in the mail shortly and am planning on reading and reviewing that asap. What are you reading this week?

Happy Reading!

  1. Looks like you’ve been reading a lot of different stuff this week! Sorry to hear that about Inherit the Stars. I’m still going to look into it a bit more – maybe find a preview for it – sometime. Probably sometime after I get off my book buying ban though, and then I’ll be able to get some more opinions about it. I am thrilled to hear however that you liked Truthwitch. I hear amazing things about it and I am super looking forward to that book.

  2. Truthwitch is now on my to-read list :D I haven’t gotten any xmas shopping done – zip!! But that’s usual for me, being a last minute shopper. I’m aiming for this weekend to get everything done.

  3. congrats on getting your shopping done :) I have one more thing and I will be done, although i made a lot of gifts this year so there wasn’t much shopping. I can’t wait to read Truthwitch – so many good things have been said about it by readers I trust :)

    Have a wonderful week!

    • Thanks! I hope you got everything done without too much stress ;-). Every year I mean to make more gifts, but then don’t get started early enough to do so >.> Maybe I should start crocheting next year’s now haha!

  4. You’ve got me curious about Dragon Hunters and congrats on getting Fire Touched!

  5. You have been one busy reader and shopper! Color me impressed! We’re not doing much in the way of presents this year, but I have one crafty thing left to do, too…though it is a little stressful. White paint pen? No problem. Tracking down this little gold-ish specific width thread w/plastic covering? Proving a little more difficult. We’ll figure something out though. Best of luck on your crafty endeavors and review writing!

  6. It is a great feeling to have my Christmas shopping done! I wasn’t sure about starting Marc Turner’s series, but I might have to for Dragons! Yay for Truthwitch! I just finished Six of Crows and Air Awakens and they were both so good! I don’t know what to read next!

    • I really enjoyed Turner’s series! It’s a pretty complex build up each book, but completely worth it as long as you enjoy epic fantasy ;-)

  7. Most of my Christmas shopping is done too! Just a few more things to get next weekend :) Looks like you had a good week too. I’m glad you liked Truthwitch! I loved that book and can’t wait to get a final copy for my shelf. I’m reading a Dark Shade of Magic right now and I’m really liking it. Have a good week!

  8. Congrats on finishing your Christmas shopping! That’s always a satisfying feeling.

Glad to hear that it sounds like you enjoyed Witches of Lychford. I didn’t know that was a novella. I might have to pick it up soon, I’m in the mood to read something short.
