Updates from the Lair 2/22/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Today is my birthday! :D I’ll be 25 at about 4:00pm if I recall correctly (what my mother told me, I didn’t glance at a clock when born, hehe). The other really big news is I’m having back surgery! March 11th at 10am they’ll make a 1inch incision and use a laparoscopic procedure to cut out the part of the disc that is pinching my nerve with a laser. I’ll have to spend one night in the hospital, but then can go home and should be feeling pretty good right away. I do have to avoid lifting more than 10lbs for six weeks though and my backpack with my computer in it is more than 10lbs…. I’m going to get one of those rolling bags though so that I can be careful. I’m going to be working hard to follow all the doctor’s orders to hopefully keep in good help for many decades to come :D.

My Week

Jinn and JuiceI heard from a friend that Nicole Peeler is hilarious so I had to jump into my earc of Jinn and Juice! It has definitely been a lot of fun so far and I really love the jinni element. I highly recommend this new series for urban fantasy fans that are looking for a jinni in their life :D. I’ll be picking up the paperback when it comes out because it is so gorgeous while still portraying the character accurately <3.

A Darker Shade of MagicI was so so so excited to receive a hardcover of A Darker Shade of Magic this week and immediately started it. I looooooove the magic and world so much and am amusingly reminded of Mistborn partially because the main guy is named Kell ;-). But it also just has a similar fun tone of magic + thieves trying to do the right thing in worlds that are pretty screwed up. Definitely recommended!

I was very excited to get an audio review copy of Winner’s Crime and started it as soon as I was done with my previous (Dove Arising which wasn’t that great). I’ll be honest all, I’m a little bored at 40%. Does it get amazingly better soon or am I just not that into Kestrel? The narration is pretty good, though I have an issue with this quiver/warble she puts at the end of a lot of sentences >.>.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Grave Matters Villain Keeper A Wicked Thing

I just got a copy of Grave Matters in the mail and I’m excited to start it right away. I really enjoyed book one and hope book two is even better :D. If I manage to finish my current eARC, I can’t decide what to read next. I’m thinking I want to try Villain Keeper since it looks cute and has a dragon on the cover >.>. I also haven’t had a chance to read A Wicked Thing yet and I think it is pretty good right? What do you think I should read? :D

Happy Reading!

  11. Happy Birthday! I hope that you have a great day and that the surgery goes well. I’d vote for A Wicked Thing. I didn’t know the book, but I looked at the blurb and it seems that the author decided to answer the questions that I had when I heard the story as a child: How can she be happy waking up a century after she fell asleep when her whole world must have changed?

    • I still haven’t gotten to Wicked Thing, but I completely agree, I really want to know how this author thinks things turn out!

  12. HAPPY 25TH BIRTHDAY ANYA! I hope you have an amazing day today! AND I hope everything is better after your surgery. Make sure to get tons of rest!!!

A Darker Shade of Magic!!! I’m getting my copy onew the 24th! AND WHAT HIS NAME IS KELL? I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get over Kelsier from Mistborn :(

    • Thanks!! :D I’ve been sleeping a lot in these days leading up to surgery and took Monday and Tuesday off work so I should be completely physically and mentally prepared!

Hehe, he’s close enough to Kelsier that I kind of just pretended this was a prequel at times >.> ;-)
