Updates from the Lair 3/08/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I knew this past week would go by fast, but it still feels weird that it’s over >.>. This is of course because surgery is scheduled for Wednesday and there is now very little standing in the way. I’ve got everything all planned out and should be back to reading and typing right away, but if I suddenly stop posting, you’ll know it’s because I am more out of it than expected ;-). I’m really excited to have permission to do nothing but read for a week though :D.

My Week

Falling KingdomsFalling Kingdoms is my current audio and I’m almost done with it. I have to say that I’m a little disappointed since it wasn’t at all what I was expecting. There is very little magic and mostly just spoiled brat royals and politics. Definitely no cool people in white cloaks with swirly weapons as the cover promises….

Grave MattersI read all of Grave Matters this week and feel very proud finishing a book in one week again ;-). I really enjoyed the first book, Night Owls, last year and Grave Matters isn’t quite as fun but still a refreshing urban fantasy that breaks out of the loner-heroine alpha-male mold. The plot focuses on ghouls and necromancy which scares me a bit, but also isn’t something you see that often!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Half Bad Death Marked Three Parts Dead The Girl at Midnight

I snagged the audiobook of Half Wild, so I think I’ll listen to Half Bad as my next audio. I think I’m in the right mood for a darker and strange fantasy ;-). I didn’t make any progress on Death Marked this week, so I’ll be finishing that this coming week for sure! I’m joining in a read-a-long for Three Parts Dead and am SO EXCITED since the first few pages already promise a crazy awesome fantasy. And finally, I was approved for Girl at Midnight and will not be able to resist reading that, possibly in the hospital :D.

I’m really behind on writing reviews, but hopefully I’ll get caught up with that and three weeks worth of commenting Monday and Tuesday! Be prepared for a lot of reply notifications ;-).

Happy Reading!

  1. I’m sorry to hear you’re not enjoying Falling Kingdoms! It’s hard to like a book when it’s not what you expected, I think. It’s been awhile since I read, but I think I actually liked it because of all the politics and the epic scale of the events in the story. Again, best of luck with the surgery! I hope you have lots of fun reading afterwards :)

  2. As much as I love Falling Kingdoms, I don’t know what the covers are supposed to mean, because they have very little in common with the book. I can kind of guess what scene they picture, but they’re more than a bit misleading. The magic part does become much more important in the second book and, seeing how that one ended, I’m guessing that it’ll be a key plotline in the rest of the series. Politics are still a big part in book two, so if you don’t like this, you may find it a bit too slow.

    • Hehe, right?? That’s good to know about book two, I’ll probably hold off for now and see what everyone thinks of the series as a whole perhaps.

  3. I hope your surgery goes well!!!!
I love the cover for Death Marked, I will have to check this one out. I am hoping to read The Girl at Midnight this month.

  4. Ugh, I was so disappointed by Falling Kingdoms too. I’m holding out for book two though!

  5. I’m excited for the Girl at Midnight. I truly hope it lives up to it’s promises!
Also, I can’t wait to see what you think about Half Bad. I’ve heard varying things about the title that make me wonder if a sensitive reader like me could handle it. But I am totally intrigued!

    • I ended up really enjoying Half Bad! It is pretty dark and gruesome at times, but not more than I could take and I’m pretty sensitive too. It was less depressing than I feared too ;-)

  6. Ashley Christy says:

I listened to Falling Kingdoms thinking it would be exactly to my tastes and ended up feeling very close to how you felt. Between the cover and hearing all the Game of Thrones comparisons, I was super pumped. I keep meaning to read the second one, but I just haven’t yet.

More to my taste, I know you also enjoy Scott Lynch. Did you see Thorn of Emberlain’s cover was posted last week? He says it should be out this year! *excited flailing*

    Good luck with your surgery!

    • I did see the Thorn of Emberlain cover, though I don’t really like it with all the armor >.> Very excited to read it though of course!!

  7. I was disappointed with Falling Kingdoms too. The characters pissed me off at the start. But I do have to say they improved at the end (and I think there were some good plot developments I liked) and OMG BOOK TWO.

Girl at Midnight! That books sounds so interesting. I hope you enjoy it :D

  8. Good luck on the surgery this week, Anya! Are you still planning to check out the audiobook of Poison Study when you have a chance?

    • Definitely am! I got distracted by Half Bad, but I actually already own the audio of Poison Study ;-) Thanks!!

  9. Ooo you read Morgan Rhodes! Its great that you’re sticking to your one-book-a-week schedule, I’m struggling with that myself.

Mad Gladstone gets bumped up my list every time somebody mentions Three Parts Dead or the other on; they look like such amazing reads. Half Bad is one YA book in particular that really does the whole YA fantasy genre a favour. I thought it was brilliant. Happy reading!

    • Some weeks I’m better than others ;-). I keep reassuring myself that I’ll make up for missed weeks once summer comes, haha. I’m really enjoyed Half Bad, though I wish Nathan’s life was easier D: *hugs him*

  10. I still vow to send lots of positive thoughts and vibes your way for the surgery – it sucks when it’s looming over you like this and you can’t think of anything else. You want time to slow down but at the same time want it over with D: I’m sure things will go smoothly for you though and I wish you lots of reading time while you recoup :D You’ve got lots of good looking books lined up in any case ;) xx

    • Its much appreciated! I’m not really a prayer person, but have honestly been comforted by the idea when people at work said they’d pray for me, haha. Just something about knowing a bunch of people are all thinking good things for you that lifts you up and reassures!

  11. Good luck with your surgery, I hope it all goes well!
I read Falling Kingdoms and I vaguely remembered liking it, but my husband also reads that series and he’s read and really liked the second one.
I definitely want to see what you have to say about Death Marked, I was debating on if I wanted to continue that series or not but I’ll have to wait and see what other people think too.
    Have a great week!

    • Death Marked has a lot more magic and higher stakes than book one, so I think most of the problems are fixed and make it a nice strong fantasy read :D

  12. Oh, good luck with your surgery!

  13. I’m so excited for Half Wild, not joke, Half Bad rocked :D! The covers are so cool though, it took me a while to figure out Half Bad had a persons face on it hahaha :)
I’m really sad to hear about Falling Kingdoms :/ I thought it had loads of magic, something I would have loved…. so sad…
    Have a good day :)
