Updates from the Lair 3/29/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Yey for another crazy week! Between late nights working and migraines, I didn’t have any time to myself to get much reading or blogging done. I had been hoping to get caught up this weekend, but the weekend is ending up devoted to grading and homework with a bit of hanging out with friends thrown in to keep me sane. Seems like this is just going to be the norm for the rest of the semester….

My Week

Crimson Bound I made a bit of progress in Crimson Bound and have gotten enough information about the magic that I’m quite intrigued! I’m being pulled right back into a cool and unique magical world with enough inspiration from Red Riding Hood to be cool, but not so much that things feel predictable. Really this is more the story of what happens after Red Riding Hood meets the wolf >.>.

Half BadI finished my audiobook of Half Bad this week and ended up quite enjoying it. It wasn’t as depressing as I worried it would be and proved to be nicely unpredictable with cool magic and a delightful narrator. I definitely recommend the audiobook if you’re curious about it!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Heart of Betrayal Poison Study The Grace of Kings

I will try to make more progress on Heart of Betrayal this week since I’m only about 80 pages in currently. I think Poison Study will be my next audiobook since you all have been suggesting it :D. And I just got approved for The Grace of Kings and am quite tempted to jump in, so I might do that spontaneously if I’m not feeling YA this week ;-).

Happy Reading!

  1. I remember weekends spent grading, it can be so exhausting! I hope you had a chance to get some relaxation in though :) and I hate migraines, I hope you have a way to stop them, because they’re rough. I’ve found that just a little caffeine helps mine stop in their tracks (and I’m not a caffeine drinker). Have a great week :)

    • Indeed! I finished early this weekend though so I got to have fun blogging today :D I’m unfortunately completely addicted to caffeine so over the counter stuff doesn’t help me anymore. I have prescription rescue meds though that work eventually

  2. Yeah, it’s been a little busy/tiring for too much reading lately, hasn’t it? I hope you get a little more downtime soon! Is Crimson Bound reminding you a lot of Cruel Beauty? I’ve been looking for some good Red Riding Hood retellings, but…well, Cruel Beauty and I didn’t exactly get along. ;)

    • Yeah, life has been a bit crazy ;-) Crimson Bound definitely has similar aspects as Cruel Beauty with a love triangle and a fair amount of romance :-/

  3. Ugh. Migraines are THE worst, I’m sorry you’ve been struggling with them lately :( I had a bad bout of them early in March and it was no fun. It’s funny to see you’re reading Crimson Bound, since I just (slowly) started Cruel Beauty…I’m only at about 10% so far but I’m intrigued. Half Bad and Poison Study are both ones I want to read, so I’ll be looking out for your thoughts on those too :) I hope you feel better this week!! x

  7. I’m looking forward to seeing what you think of Crimson Bound Anya! It sounds like such a unique retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, and combined with Rosamund Hodge’s beautiful writing it’s sure to be a hit. :) Thanks for sharing and, as always, great recap! Happy reading! <3

    • Unique is DEFINITELY how I’d describe Crimson Bound. It was really cool and such a crazy world just like Cruel Beauty was in the end :D

  8. Half Bad I couldn’t really get into, and I’ve never read anything by Rosamund Hodge but that is a very pretty cover.

I really enjoyed Poison Study, and I much prefer this narrator to the next one in the Glass series.

    • Hodge has some really lovely writing, definitely recommended if you like that :D Good to know about the Glass narrator, I shall not be lured into false security, haha

  9. I’m reading Half Bad right now, and really liking it! The writing style is different, and I dig it! Poison Study was a recent read for me too, and I loved it — hoping you have similar feelings for it to. :) Also, feel better — I used to get migraines too, there is nothing worse than being down for the count and not able to read…

    • It’s definitely different, but if you like different, it’s awesome :D I’m also loving Poison Study, it’s like we have similar tastes or something ;-)

  10. I hope your next week will be better and you will have more time for yourself! Happy reading. :)
And great for The Grace of Kings. I am stalking Edelweiss and NetGalley for when it will appear. :D

  11. I;m sorry to hear that you have not been feeling well, migraines are horrible, I get them too :/

I read Half Bad and liked it a lot and it too surprised me. Hope you have a wonderful week!

  12. I hope that your weeks improve or at least the migraines do! The plot of Poison Study looks a bit… strange, but I’m curious to read what you think of it.

    • Apparently that was just a bad batch of stress since I haven’t had another one this week. Poison Study is pretty darn fun I have to admit ;-)

  13. Boo for migraines. The Grace of Kings looks interesting. Happy reading!

  14. Yay!!!! Anya’s finally going to read Poison Study! :) Do you think you’ll review it after you finish it?

    • A mini review for sure :D I haven’t been reviewing my audiobooks much lately because I’ve been so pressed for time, but I’m liking it so much that I might have to ;-)
