Updates from the Lair 4/19/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Blagh…. Grading is driving me nuts this week. Otherwise it’s been a pretty normal week. Except for the engagement ring breaking and the diamond falling out and getting lost…. It’s insured so we already brought the band in to be fixed but that was not a fun evening looking all over the apartment to see if we could find the diamond, sigh. Always get the insurance!!! You don’t think it’s a sign do you? >.>

My Week

The Grace of KingsI’ve only got a few hours left of reading for The Grace of Kings! The first half was pretty slow going, but the second half picks up quite a bit and actually focuses in on the main character instead of jumping between a million characters during a huge war.

An Ember in the AshesI snagged a review copy of the audiobook of An Ember in the Ashes and so started that this week. It’s cool so far, the narration is solid and the bad guys have magical parasitic masks of living metal! I haven’t gotten to the part that pushes this book into the 4.22 average rating on Goodreads, but I’m quite hopeful.

The Perilous Princess PlotI was in the mood to break from epic fantasy one evening and so picked up The Perilous Princess Plot for some light-hearted fun and it was perfect! There are so many puns, I was laughing non-stop :D. There are also footnotes about time-traveling goats! I’m laughing just remembering reading this book! It does have detached limbs in the illustrations though so not really sure what age group it would be best for.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Uprooted  NIL Unlocked Novice Becoming Jinn Hexed

I’m really not sure what I’m going to read once I finished Grace of Kings! I think my next e-read will be Uprooted because I’ve been seeing WONDERFUL things about it! But I don’t know what physical book to grab. I’m in the mood for something fun and fast and my YA May choices are: NIL Unlocked, The Novice, Becoming Jinn, and Hexed. Have thoughts one way or the other?

Happy Reading!

  1. Did you find your diamond???
Lyn Kaye recently posted…Forgotten Fridays: Eyes Like StarsMy Profile

    • Nope! We brought the ring in to Zales and they are replacing it though, thank goodness for insurance

  2. Ugh, grading sounds like such a pain. Good thing the semester is almost over! Do you have to teach any summer classes?

Oh man, I’m so glad your ring was insured. That happened to friends of mine last year, and they had to buy a new diamond. They are still happily married, though, so no worries, I don’t think it’s a sign. :) (Unless it’s a sign that you make good decisions like getting insurance and choosing your fiance!)

    I hope everything’s still going well post-surgery!

    • No summer classes for me! I have grant funding for the rest of my degree hopefully now so I’m good to go :D

Hehe, that’s good to hear! Now we’re having more problems with the simple bands we got being sent in the wrong color and size, sigh, eventually we will have rings!

  3. Wow, it’s good you had your ring insured! I’m sure that was stressful anyway though. My ring is also insured and I would definitely still freak out if it broke.

    • I have to give my fiancee props for not freaking out as much as I would have expected, haha. I think it was just so shocking especially and then you think it’ll turn up any minute and it never does….

  4. Uprooted is not middle grade. More like adult / YA cross over

  5. I’m reading Uprooted now and it’s pretty good! I absolutely ADORED The Grace of Kings though.

    • Yey, I’m really excited to read Uprooted, after Grace of Kings I’m in the mood for something lighter ;-)

  6. The Perilous Princess Plot sounds adorable!

  7. I’m really curious about An Ember in the Ashes, it sounds like a great read, but I haven’t had a good relationship with any books set in the past, I think I’ve managed to finish about 2 that I have read over the years.

    Check out my haul

    • An Ember in the Ashes I think is supposed to be inspired by Roman culture but doesn’t seem like it is actually supposed to be in the past, much more fantasy

  8. OMG on the ring. Maybe a redesign is in order???? ;-)

  9. And it is not a sign you dork

  10. I loved UPROOTED! I totally need to check out hexef, it looks fun.

  11. Aw, sorry to hear about the grading and the ring. I don’t think it’s a sign. Except to maybe get a plain wedding band, no jewel? Then again, I’m not a big fan of jewelry to begin with, so who knows. ;)

    Yay puns!

    • Hehe, I do want a band that has cool metal working and the gem set in a bit more securely, so it’s nice to have proof that I need a sturdier ring!

  12. I’m betting that once you get the ring back and it’s all fixed like new, the old diamond will turn up. That’s always how it works for my family. We lose something, tear the house apart for a week or so, finally give up and go out and buy a replacement. And within minutes to a day of getting the replacement, the old one turns up!

I can’t wait to see your reviews on Becoming Jinn and Hexed. The synopsis’ looked good on those, and I’m hoping the books are too!
Silvara recently posted…How Do You Organize Your Books? My Profile

    • Right?? I keep waiting to randomly spot it since that’s how I normally find lost things. Since I’m moving next month, my suspicion is that it’s under something and I’ll find it once all the furniture is moved D:

  13. So sorry about the ring! I still need to go get mine insured; I haven’t had time to get it appraised yet, and it’s an inherited one from the fiance’s grandmother. This gives me some VERY good incentive to go get that taken care of ;)

    And no, I don’t think it’s a sign ;)

  14. Oh noes! I’m so sorry for your engagement ring! Good thing it was insured but that still sucks all the same! And no I DON’T think it’s a sign! Just one of life’s random annoyances.

You’ve got a lot of wonderful reading coming up^^ I’m exceedingly curious to hear how you’ll make out with An Ember in the Ashes, Novice AND Becoming Jinn :D Happy reading lady! xx

    • Yeah, I keep looking at my finger and being sad that I don’t have it on anymore :( Hehe, I’m not too superstitious, don’t worry ;-)

  15. I will be reading Uprooted soon too. And I just got a surprise copy of Hexed in the mail, which I’m very excited about!

    • Hexed was a surprise for me too, but it just looks so appealing for some reason, shiny and new probably, ha! I hope we both enjoy them :D

  16. Oh my, I’m sorry to hear about your engagement ring. Thank goodness for insurance! The Perilous Princess sounds lie a fun read, I do enjoy puns. Good luck with your grading
Bea @Bea’s Book Nook recently posted…Sunday Book Share #137My Profile

    • The grading fortunately got done earlier than I feared since so many students didn’t turn anything in, ugh! But, that means I got to write reviews tonight :D

  17. I really want to read the NIL series. I am a huge fan of the tv show Lost and I’ve heard they are kind of similar.
Stacey Brucale recently posted…The Truth About Jack Book BlitzMy Profile

    • I was originally hooked on Nil for that reason too, but I have to say that there is a lot more teen angst and drama in Nil than Lost D: I’m hopeful about book two revealing more about the island though!
