Updates from the Lair 4/24/16

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I’m clearly really out of it this weekend, I definitely forgot it was Sunday >.>. I had been planning on writing up this post last night after getting back from dinner, but then I just got hit with a wall of exhaustion and went right to bed! This week was crazy intense because I turned in the written portion of my dissertation proposal! It was three days of really long hours and intense editing, but I did it! Now I just have to get through the oral exam and I’m ABD :D. (“All but dissertation” for those of you who haven’t gone through the lovely experience that is grad school ;-).)

My Week

The Girl with the Ghost EyesI obviously didn’t have a lot of reading time this week, but I did make a lot of progress on my audiobook The Girl with Ghost Eyes! This is an excellent book focused on a woman in San Francisco who came to America with her father when she was a child. She has the power to see the spirits and therefore hunts them with her father and has awesome magic. I really love fantasy based on cultures and myths other than my own, so it’s been great getting to learn more about Chinese mythology and magic!

The RookI also kind of randomly got completely addicted to The Rook! I’ve been devouring this book this weekend (and it’s partially to blame for me not getting much blogging done). I got the sequel as an unsolicited ARC, and figured I’d get the first from the library since the series sounded interesting. I’m completely hooked; how did I miss this book when it first came out???? It’s like Kingsmen with more supernatural elements and completely unique super powers. Do not make my mistake, don’t miss out on this series!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Everland A Green and Ancient Light The Rose and the Dagger

You know my brain is fried when I have no idea what I’ll be reading next! I think I’ll jump into Everland next since it just showed up (after I had managed to get through all my May books, sigh). Otherwise A Green and Ancient Light has been calling to me as well! Finally, since I’ll probably finish my audiobook soon, my next audiobook I think will be The Rose and the Dagger because OBVIOUSLY! ;-)

Happy Reading!

  1. Well done on getting your thesis turned in! I’m just a bit behind you, with my thesis due June 6th and my oral exam on June 20th :) I’m so excited to be about done!

  2. I was totally obsessed with The Rook. Got it for Christmas from a friend, and once I started reading, it was unputdownable. Definitely one of my favorites that I’ve read this year. When is the sequel coming out? I’m excited for it!

  7. So you got an unsolicited ARC of Stiletto and that’s why you’re reading the Rook too? That’s EXACTLY what happened to me! I figured I’ve had this book on my tbr forever now and I’ve heard all these awesome things about it, this is the motivation I need to finally get on it. I grabbed the audiobook from the library and I’m about halfway now. I agree, it’s excellent so far and I love it!

I hope you have a great week, Anya, whatever you decide to read next. And I hope you get some rest and some time off sounds like you deserve it!
