Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hi lovelies! I’m writing this from the fiancee’s house since I finally got to go out and visit him this weekend! We went shopping for simple wedding bands for the upcoming legal marriage ceremony, applied for our marriage certificate, and bought some new clothes to look nice even though it’s just a legality thing ;-). The semester is almost over and I’m so freaking excited!!!

My Week

UprootedI had a lot of insomnia this week, so one night I started Uprooted at about 3am and read until 6am! It is not middle grade as I thought from the cover, and instead is YA/bordering on adult fantasy with cool magic and a wizard. I haven’t had a chance to read much since that night, but I’m enjoying it quite a lot :D.

An Ember in the AshesI’m almost done with my audiobook of An Ember in the Ashes. It has wonderful narration and is pretty intense, but also depressing enough that I haven’t found myself looking for more listening time since it just kind of puts me in a stressed mood D:. I clearly need fluffy fantasy right now, ha.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Novice The Mad Apprentice

I’m thinking that The Novice will fit my mood currently better than other options since it sounds like it’s younger YA fantasy. I’m going to give it a try at least! I have The Mad Apprentice as an audiobook for review so I think it’ll be my next audiobook since it should also fit my mood for lighter fantasy :D. Also doesn’t that cover rock???

Happy Reading!

  1. I wonder what you mean by the wedding is just a legal thing? I’m genuinely curious (:
The Novice looks awesome. It looks a lot like something called The Ranger’s Apprentice. I really should read that series now that I think about it. Anyways, hope you have a lovely week.

    • We’re doing a courthouse marriage in May since we’re moving in together and want the rent and insurance to be easier, and then a more traditional ceremony in the fall :)

  2. Agreed ember is so dark and I want light right now. But it’s good. Maybe I’ll read Novice as well. :-) wait court of thorns and rides is next for me lol

  3. Sounds like it might be time for another middle grade palate cleanser before you dive into any more serious/depressing books. ;) Congrats again! I’m sure the rings are/ceremony will be lovely.

  4. I read the book that comes before The Mad Apprentice (The Forbidden Library) and admit I was rather disappointed. Have you read The Forbidden Library as well? Or are you going into the series at book two cold?

    • I read Forbidden Library too and agree that it wasn’t all I hoped it would be. What didn’t you like?

  5. What kind of wedding bands did you take? The same or his and hers edition (I love those).
The Novice got mixed reviews but I liked it. Started slow but then got intense. Reminded me of Harry Potter. And they have demon compainion. Cute pets are my bookish kryptonite. :)

    • Yeah, the temporary ones are the simplest white gold band so they match, but I think we’re going to end up getting fancier ones eventually since I want a cool metal-working band haha.

Good to know that The Novice picks up. I love cute pets too so I’m excited about that but was finding it a bit slow.

      • Dragana says:

Haha, share a pick when you get a fancier one. :) I like simple. Mine wedding band is simple white gold with little grooves. Mine has some little stones randomly strewn about and husband’s does not. If I had to wear everyday something fancy and expensive I would worry all the time I would lose it. :D

At about 20-25% when he goes to magic academy, the book becomes a page-turner. At least for me. A lot of demons, magic, classes, … :)

        • See when I say “fancy” I think I mean basically what you have, haha, just something more than straight gold and nothing else which is what we are getting temporarily.

I finished The Novice in one day once I got further along :D

          • Dragana says:

Haha :D Why you will not have them ready for ceremony in May? They can’t make it in time? I remember when we were looking for ours, it was crazy: one shop told us they could have them ready in a year. o.O They even criticized us why we didn’t start making preparations in time… But we found one who could do it in a couple of months.

          • Yeah, they couldn’t even get me the ring resized in time for the wedding! I’m hoping they can make what I want sooner than a year though, gulp!

  6. You won’t regret buying those new clothes, regardless that it is just a “legality thing” like you said. That is soo cool :D I’ve always wanted to read An Ember in the Ashes though. At least you know the story through the audio book! I’m really curious with your thoughts about it :)

  7. You guys’ wedding organization stuff sounds like a lot of fun – even though it’s a legal thing doesn’t mean it can’t be fun…and that you guys can’t look nice ;) And a big WOO-HOO for the semester almost being over! I’m really pumped to check out Uprooted as well, even though I only found out about it this past week. It sounds right up my alley. And I’m still curious about how you’ll do with the ending of An Ember in the Ashes, and I want to know why it’s so depressing D: Oh and obviously I’m eager to see how you’ll do with The Novice :D Have a great week Anya^^ x

    • I’m so bad at being the girl who is super excited about organizing wedding stuff, haha. I need to start actually working on the full ceremony now that classes are done, but I keep forgetting >.>

      Yes, read Uprooted, it’s AMAZING!!!!

  8. Congratulations! Even if it’s just the legal stuff, you’re still going to remember it for the rest of your lives so it totally makes sense to take it seriously. :D
