Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Happy May! Man, what a crazy week it has been! For the last week and a half I was having some major insomnia, to the point of only being able to sleep for about three hours at a time before I woke up, got up, did some work, then went back to sleep a few hours later for a few more hours *sigh*. I seem to finally be out of that weirdness though! Classes are done (my last class ever!) and I have one final next week that I’m not worried about, so things should be less crazy going forward :D. I’m also all done with the last grading of the semester!

My Week

The Mad Apprentice

I started listening to the audio of The Mad Apprentice this week and I think I’m going to like it more than book one. My main concern with the world from the previous book was that these clearly sentient creatures were being captured and kept as slaves by the main character. However, in the very beginning of this book, Alice has an internal monologue about treating her creatures fairly and wanting them to be allies, so I’m happier!

The NoviceI started The Novice as my current physical ARC and it’s going all right. I haven’t had much energy for reading I’m afraid, but I’m liking the “demons” that are showing up because they are basically adorable little dragons (see his left shoulder on the cover!). Dragons!!!

The Tale of the Dueling NeurosurgeonsI was struck by a desire to read a non-fiction this week so I read the first couple chapters of The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons because I looooooove pop science neuroscience books! At first I was excited, because the book is supposed to highlight lesser known case studies that revealed things about the brain, but so far I’m just kind of disturbed and disappointed with a lack of explanation of what neurological problem the first cases had. The emphasis has been much more on the disturbing behavior leading up to autopsy. I might skip ahead to more recent cases since they are probably better understood?

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Cold Burn of Magic

I’ve only barely started my current reads, so it’s unlikely I’ll get to many new books this week, but I read the first chapter of The Cold Burn of Magic on Friday and think that something fun and urban fantasy-ish is just what I need between these epic fantasies, so I’ll probably read a bit of it this week ;-).

What are you reading?

  2. That is so odd – I’m not usually one that struggles with insomnia but the last few days, I have NOT been sleeping great :-/ It sucks. Last night was much better though so *fingers crossed* Le gasp! Non-fiction?! What is this non-fiction you speak of? LOL just kidding (kinda), I used to read non-fiction too, I just haven’t gotten the urge in a while :) And from the reviews I’ve read so far, Novice sounds really promising so I hope it’ll deliver for you as well! Happy reading doll! xx

    • We are psychically linked! I sometimes wonder if I can’t sleep when the boy is working nights even though I’m not at his place just because my brain knows he’s awake somewhere in the world, haha.

My non-fiction experiment failed, itch satisfied after about fifty pages, haha!

  3. YAY for no more classes, congrats! Boo for insomnia, I’m glad it seems to be done. I have to check out your review for the Perilous Princess book, that seems like a cute book.

    Have a good week!

I loved the demons in The Novice too. :)
I’m intrigued with The Cold Burn of Magic since I crave for fun UFs lately. I can wait to hear your opinion about it. :)
